Breakaways are crucial momentum swingers in any game at any level. You need to have a solid, time tested and a proven tactical approach to breakaways. This video will go in to depth on the inverted Y theory used by all the TOP NHL GOALIES. You will learn about the initial angle, glide phase, diagonal slide direction, patience, stick puck relationship, fake poke checks and how hard and early you should begin your retreat. And a big plus. I will teach you a few drill variations to work on all aspect of this tactical approach.

We love working with adult goalies and have a large student component of female goaltenders.
Great drills Steve! Perfect for our young goalies, where they have like 7-10 breakaways in every game. 👏👏👏
Thanks Robert. Sounds like weak defense!
@@FutureProGoaltendingUSA thanks for saying what us goalie parents can't. My 9 yo had a rough go a couple days back and other than telling him to shake it off and make himself better there's not much to be done until his defense figures it out.
Great video. My tip to new goalies, and 1 I learned the hard way is to wait a 1/2 second longer before you start to back up. Too many times have I seen new goalies in the net with the puck because they backup too soon and too fast. Personally what I experience now, most shooters go to the corner on breakaways rather than shooting.
A couple of things you touched on that were key in stepping my game up. Understanding the stick / puck relationship. While a shooter is stick handling, I stay square to the puck, and actively use my peripheral vision to scan for back door threats. I also stay in a more upright and relaxed position. As they transition from stick handling to shooting, I crouch down in my get ready position and do about 1/2 a C cut forward to cut off the angle ever so slightly more. By moving forward a couple of inches, I have gone from a 85% to a 92%. Another side effect to staying more upright longer, I save energy and also feel more confident.
Ironically one thing I had to stop doing, is making my videos public. This may not apply in Canadaland where you have a huge pool of hockey players and may never see the same shooter twice in a season. But here in Alabama, where I see the same guys every week, someone let it slip that they have been studying my game footage to try and find my weak spots. I found this to be true amongst several of the guys who scored on me the most. It’s a good thing I don’t make a living with TH-cam videos, but I wonder if other goalies out there have had similar problems.
Thanks Old Fogey…. I also don’t make my living on TH-cam…
Hey Old Fogey, I play with the same core of players playing in a draft league and other leagues and skates with them. I have learned to NEVER discuss what bothers me or what I feel my shortcomings are...good players will remember and use it against you, just like video. I try to get THEM to talk about what THEY are seeing and what frustrates THEM and what their favorite moves are. I credit much of my "success" to developing a mental book on their tendencies...you need every edge you can get when you are old and have a meager skillset! GIVE THEM NOTHING!
@@arthurcompton2461 that is definitely a great strategy. Discussing your short comings with talented shooters will initially create a deficient for yourself. However, you will also learn to overcome that and eventually turn your weakness into your strength.
Just watched it before heading to school thanks coach awesome thumbnail btw
He has grown up a little since I first worked with him…😎
Excellent video even for a 59 year old beer leaguer for reference to brush up on breakaway skills before a big game!
@@arthurcompton2461 thanks for watching

@@FutureProGoaltendingUSA Thanks for the feedback
Great drills ! Keeks . I will take and try anything I can to be better at stopping those Bozo forwards .
Sounds good Pac
Excellent video and drills! I have been focusing on decision zone philosophy and slide to post which has invariably led me to back in early and give up top shelf or come in late with an extended stretch which burns up my aging hips. Seeing the lines on the ice really has helped me visualize what I need to do. Gonna definitely try this and hopefully help me on the many breakaways I get per game. I do tend to struggle on adjusting to player coming from the side but i can just skew that line on changing angle and hope adapt. Key is that hold and as you put it Lambo push! Thanks!
Thanks for watching. If you get any video clips of you on some breakaways I can point out things for you.
Thanks!
Nice vid keeks! It won't help me because I suck, but I'll try it anyways! :p
Honesty is the best policy
Thank you very much for this video. How far from the player does the goalie need to be to start backing up?
Varies depending on goalies instant acceleration ability and speed of attacker
@@FutureProGoaltendingUSA can you give me an idea of approximate distance for a beer league goalie like most of us thank you
@@facedetruite8475 10feet
Bring back the poke check!!!
Lots of stick shyness because younger goalie coaches have no experience in it, so they can’t teach it and just pretend you won’t need it… “Announcer….. “you will.”
Thanks for the video, my son has been struggling a bit as of late when the shot comes from the breakaway vs the deke. I think as you said he probably backs up to early giving them more net. Will watch for that at practice to see. So the backup should start when the player essentially makes it to the hashmarks is what I get from the drills you show seeing as the kid is starting from that point?
Depends on shooters speed and your goalies instant backward acceleration speed.
@@FutureProGoaltendingUSA thanks will watch a little closer next time.
Im using stick, because i play inline😅
