Basil Poledouris often wrote inspired music, but none of his other Scores had the scope and grandeur of Conan. Two essential qualities that make a unique Masterpiece: had not aged a bit in 33 years and you can listen to it randomly forever, will never bore. Met the man in 1999, asked WHY HE NEVER CONDUCTED LIVE this splendid work. Answered he didn't like available orchestras and choruses. He was fighting for his life when he finally conducted it in Andalusia with a crappy Orchestra & Chorus. I was there. I gave him a hug afterwards. Out of tune Players and Chorus. Sad. RIP. Thank you for this immortal gift, Maestro.
Tried to watch on Y.T. the constant page turning of the score,by Everyone, even B.P. as conductor, smacks of desperation (let's git er done) and probably was the main reason it sucks. There are better (later) versions out there, check them out. Moral: PRACTICE makes perfect! Do you need, really NEED the score? Practice/ Rehearse more.

I watched the video over and over again, hundred of times. Still wetting my eyes when I saw Conan's eyes when he raised his head after pushing the gigantic wheel for over 20 years.

Conan the Barbarian was (in my opinion) an excellent movie, but what truly made it shine for me was the score. It was masterfully combined with what was happening in the movie, and each main character had their own musical theme. The Tree of Woe scene still brings a tear to my eye, as he hangs dying, the music is monotonous and sad, and just when it looks like the bleak end for Conan… it transitions into the wonderful musical theme of his hyrkanian archer friend coming to the rescue. It's beautiful and amazing, and to me epitomises what movies should strive for in music scores.
I always focused on the Eye of the Serpent scene. The score there was not on the original soundtrack. But there is a full soundtrack on YT that includes it. :)
I knew my two teenage sons were going to turn out ok when I came home from work one day to find the stereo cranked playing this. They BOUGHT the soundtrack cassette. I'm still proud of them.

It's just strange how even after decades these old movies still feel the best! The adventures seem fresh and the music fits like a glove to hand. Truly the Prodcuer had a strong vision how to create this masterpiece. Definately my favourite moment in the movie: "Do you want to live forever!" Loved it as a child and Love it still!! This soundtrack is pure gold!

Compared to other famoue soundtracks yes it is very underrated. But institutions like the AFI are aware of this gem. It was elligible for the 25 best soundtracks of all time. Sadly, it didn't make it to the top 25, but just being recognized as one of the greatest soundtracks of all time is finally some overdue respect.

I use to play Warhammer to this music. Very epic. Perfect for a night of table top battles, and was a perfect D&D soundtrack. You would eat Dominos and chains? You are hard core!

This movie has so many fantastic quotes. This soundtrack is a testament to the gods. This movie along with numerous 80's movies shaped my childhood and is partly to blame for the person I have become... And if you do not listen... THEN TO HELL WITH YOU!
Robert E. Howard constantly insisted that, late at night, the Shade of Conan stood behind his shoulder dictating stories of his exploits from 10,000 years in the past and that the words came so fast that Howard could barely keep up with them on his typewriter.
@ I am sorry but I have to disagree with you. I am not going to chock it up to the Devil. Having mental health problems, no matter your faith, is where compassion and kindness come in. Just "demonizing" it is showing a lack of empathy for a person's personal battle.
12,000 years ago or so, the world was an entirely different place, of which we know almost nothing. Atlantis was the leader of an empire that spanned the (then) known world. Only a massive impact event, causing an ungodly tidal wave to wipe out and change the face of Europe and Africa forever managed to wipe them out. I am not sure that Howard wasn't crazy. But then again, he may have been telling the truth.
Can't believe I never found this thread until today but damn - do I feel like I "know" everybody here. I wanted to add to the comments that the only thing that made this movie even better for me was buying the DVD edition that had the John Milius / Arnold Schwarzenegger Commentary. There's a whole new level of appreciation, feeling like your sitting in the room with these two guys, smoking cigars laughing at scenes, Arnold joking about "getting laid" by the witch, and getting Milius' personal take on why he wanted one scene this way, another that way.
Just as it was intended, this music makes me feel like a warrior...strong, bold, and fearless with cold steel in my hand at the ready! Onward brothers, to battle!!!

Conan the Barbarian is a great movie, and before the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Game of Thrones, one that set an amazingly high bar for how to make grounded and adult fantasy. It is also a melting pot of great talents brought together at exactly the right time, with a hungry Arnold looking to dominate action stardom, a hungry Oliver Stone writing screenplays with the ambition of directing, and a hungry John Milius looking to make his mark after collaborating with Francis Ford Coppola on many outstanding films. What elevates the film beyond anything else is this cinematic score by Basil Poledouris that literally rocks the cinema and at times is like heavy metal for an orchestra, at other times is lyrical and pastoral, and is consistently emotional, uplifting, mystical, and filled with power anthems, while never forgetting the setting, the source material, or when to be quiet and reflective. A score that will remain legendary. Rest in peace. Crom is pleased.

Una banda sonora exquisita, para una película de imperecedero recuerdo. Conan El Bárbaro fue un auténtico taquillazo que influyó grata y fuertemente en los videojuegos de la época. Nobody will ever make a more sweeping classical masterpiece than these old flicks. Star wars, great. But CONAN well, Luke skywalker never cut the head of darth vader and tossed it down the stairs of the death star. Conan did. Makes me wonder what Basil could have done with Star Wars
Poledouris would have made a worthwhile Star Wars film score. I’m not sure if it would have been as memorable as what John Williams gave us. Although all good, none of Poledouris’ other scores has ever been as memorable as the ones for the Conan movies.
I listened to this 3 times in a row while raiding in WoW. After a while I forgot I had it playing in the background and thought "World of Warcraft has really upped their game for awesome raiding music" then I realized that I was still listening to the theme song for AHNOLD!!!

I had it on cassette many moons ago, then bought it on CD. It's much more ominous than the BSO version.

Part of my youth - both the movie and the soundtrack. To be frank .. after 40 (!) years ... I believe the soundtrack to be more touching .. more sustainable. Great piece of work, Basil. Love it and still like to hear. For eternity.
This score, this orchestrated music, the movie's atmosphere, it's color, it's old narrative...it was all art. You can't try to copy or top that with modern generic crashing, blood, and explosions. Learn your lesson Hollywood. Learn it well.
He managed to combine music and power, without ever descending into loudness. RopoCop, The Hunt for Red October, and Starship Troopers are greater for it. But this, Conan the Barbarian, is perhaps the greatest soundtrack ever made.
Ah, great soundtracks contribute so much to the immortality of such classic movies - what would have been Star Wars without John Williams? And Conan without Basil Poledouris?

I voted for this as the best soundtrack of all times for Classic FM radio annual list. My second choice was Ennio Morricone, for The Ecstasy of Gold. My third choice was Hans Zimmer for Inception. The second and third Composers made the list, but Poledouris was unfairly missing.

What "massively" impressed me is the music seemed to gently capture the seductive nature of cults. Um...this is impressive. Made the movie for me.

This movie has so many fantastic quotes. This soundtrack is a testament to the gods. This movie along with numerous 80's movies shaped my childhood and is partly to blame for the person I have become... And if you do not listen... THEN TO HELL WITH YOU!

12,000 years ago or so, the world was an entirely different place, of which we know almost nothing. Atlantis was the leader of an empire that spanned the (then) known world. Only a massive impact event, causing an ungodly tidal wave to wipe out and change the face of Europe and Africa forever managed to wipe them out.
I am not sure that Howard wasn't crazy. But then again, he may have been telling the truth.
Can't believe I never found this thread until today but damn - do I feel like I "know" everybody here. I wanted to add to the comments that the only thing that made this movie even better for me was buying the DVD edition that had the John Milius / Arnold Schwarzenegger Commentary. There's a whole new level of appreciation, feeling like your sitting in the room with these two guys, smoking cigars laughing at scenes, Arnold joking about "getting laid" by the witch, and getting Milius' personal take on why he wanted one scene this way, another that way.
Just as it was intended, this music makes me feel like a warrior...strong, bold, and fearless with cold steel in my hand at the ready! Onward brothers, to battle!!!

Conan the Barbarian is a great movie, and before the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Game of Thrones, one that set an amazingly high bar for how to make grounded and adult fantasy. It is also a melting pot of great talents brought together at exactly the right time, with a hungry Arnold looking to dominate action stardom, a hungry Oliver Stone writing screenplays with the ambition of directing, and a hungry John Milius looking to make his mark after collaborating with Francis Ford Coppola on many outstanding films. What elevates the film beyond anything else is this cinematic score by Basil Poledouris that literally rocks the cinema and at times is like heavy metal for an orchestra, at other times is lyrical and pastoral, and is consistently emotional, uplifting, mystical, and filled with power anthems, while never forgetting the setting, the source material, or when to be quiet and reflective. A score that will remain legendary. Rest in peace. Crom is pleased.

Nobody will ever make a more sweeping classical masterpiece than these old flicks. Star wars, great. But CONAN well, Luke skywalker never cut the head of darth vader and tossed it down the stairs of the death star. Conan did. Makes me wonder what Basil could have done with Star Wars

Poledouris would have made a worthwhile Star Wars film score. I’m not sure if it would have been as memorable as what John Williams gave us.
Although all good, none of Poledouris’ other scores has ever been as memorable as the ones for the Conan movies.
I listened to this 3 times in a row while raiding in WoW. After a while I forgot I had it playing in the background and thought "World of Warcraft has really upped their game for awesome raiding music" then I realized that I was still listening to the theme song for AHNOLD!!!

@@itsblitz4437 should be on TH-cam as an original sound track... you'll know it's from the film when Mako start talking "Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aureus, there was an age undreamed of....". I had it on cassette many moons ago, then bought it on CD. It's much more ominous than the BSO version.

This score, this orchestrated music, the movie's atmosphere, it's color, it's old narrative...it was all art. You can't try to copy or top that with modern generic crashing, blood, and explosions. Learn your lesson Hollywood. Learn it well.
