Posted this already but a series has been green lit, Shawn Levy also acknowledged in interviews the love this movie received and the demand for a sequel, he wants a meaningful script.
The director Shawn Levy said back in April they've been working on the script for the past 3 years but him and Hugh want the movie's story to be the best it can be
Every time I see this movie I can't help but wonder how they never made a sequel. Not every movie needs a sequel of course, but this was so great. Very underrated.
Supposedly there was going to be a Disney+ Show with the actor who played the kid and he was going to be an adult in it he even posted it on his socials but that was last year and nothing has since come from that news or if it's even true.
One of my favorite things about this movie is there's actually a surprising amount of environmental storytelling, one of my favorite things that's briefly mentioned is that Atom was designed probably to be a training bot or a sparring bot. He was literally built for the purpose of getting hit and keep fighting which made him such a perfect underdog, the person with the highest endurance is always going to win
Fun fact, this was the first pg-13 movie I ever watched! I was 10 years old, and my grandparents took me and my cousin to see it in theaters. My parents were so pissed when they found out!
When you think about it, each robot Charlie has represents his situation, Ambush being rusty, in need of a polish, shows him being a bit of an old fighter who is getting beaten down by chance. Noisy Boy is him trying to reclaim the glory of the old days, but unfamiliar to the new ways of the ring And Atom shows him passing off the reins to a new start, starting from the bottom and making their way to the top as the underdog.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but this is based off a short story, so that could also be why it feels a little more fleshed out. It is been years since I read it, so I don't remember how much dialog was carried over. To me, part of the reason why this movie works is that it feels like a real world progression. We already have BattleBots and before that Robot Wars. This just feels like how things could naturally progress.
This movie sold me on BattleBots. Not that I disliked it before, I just never found time to watch it. After seeing this movie, I had to have more robot fighting.
Besides the obvious father-son story, I actually appreciate the real commentary in the movie about how Charlie has come to believe that robot boxing means that there's no longer any skill or strategy involved, just the engineering of the robot. It's kinda like the tendency for people to ignore the importance and effort of the engineers and mechanics in things like F1, or NHRA, and all that, just sort of reversed. People think of the driver and forget the mind-blowing amount of effort, skill, and strategy involved with the mechanical side of it. Charlie thought it was all mechanical, and didn't appreciate skill and strategy for the driver. Also, I loved that at lot of the small fights felt a lot like modern fairground rodeos and demolition derbys, and that type of stuff. All the environments for the fighting felt really tied to how it would be in real life, even down to the super over-the-top techno styling of the actual league. You know that if we got something like that they would go full ham on it like WWE.
I saw this movie with my dad and cousin when it came out, my cousin died at 21 due to a skateboard accident shortly after and it’s one of the few memories I have with him and my dad. Thanks for sharing this.
Shawn Levy is a really great director, he knows how to balance everything to well so the movie doesn’t feel like it’s missing anything whether it’s comedy, action and character development which only gets me even more excited for Deadpool 3
Well this sure was a real treat to see pop up this morning. One of mine and my Dad's favorite comfort movies, and one I'll always remember watching with him fondly. Thank you as always Greg and Andrew!
It's weird how many reactions this movie is suddenly getting now. Last year, there was like only 2, but this year, it has increased to about 25 now. Not that im complaining. This movie is a hidden gem and my guilty pleasure, and it deserves so much attention. I still can't believe it never got a sequel, considering there is a video game that kind of serves as a sequel with Atom challenging new and super cool designed robots.
Love this movie! It was filmed all around Michigan, when we still had the filming incentives. I used to drive around and find all the filming locations where they shot this. The fight with Noisy Boy was filmed inside an old car plant. It is a real place. The zoo is an old zoo that was closed down.
Saw this in theaters on my birthday with my mom. Such a great time. We left the movie saying, "Wasnt expecting to cry in a movie about fighting robots." It was great
I'm a massive Stallone fan, This has Over The top and Rocky all over it and i loved it, Glad you guys liked it cuz it deserved better, it was such a great movie, Hit all the feels.
I like your comment about Zeus moving like an actual "robot", and I never noticed it before but when Tak Mashido went to manual mode you could actually see Zeus movements becoming more fluid and "human-like"
What I love about Shawn Levy as a director is that yes there is no new ground with his movies, there are tropes and predictable beats a mile away, but he sucks me in with infectious joy, imagination, and heart. It’s this sweet tenderness that makes his films special. No where near the same technical level of Spielberg but certain in the vein of classic Spielberg joy and wonder
I just like to points out, since it seems not a single reactor brings it up, but the guy behind Zeus, Tak Mashido is also the same guy that made Noisy Boy (Charlie said "...This is Noisy Boy, the original Tak Mashido's robot..." to Finn in the Crash Palace)
Reel Steel is so awesome and absolutely deserves a sequel The final fight will always be incredible, the jump move and final uppercut from Atom sends chills down my spine. Charlie, Max and Atom may have not won the match they absolutely 100% won the crowd and sometimes that’s all you need
Great reaction guys! This movie is a very surprisingly fun movie and that’s why I love it so much. The performances, fight sequences and vfx are so on point and incredible. Shawn Levy nailed directing this movie which makes me more excited for what he does with Deadpool 3. We definitely need a sequel to this movie.
This is my dads and I’s favorite movie of all time. Every time I see this movie, I can’t help but get hyped and emotional at certain moments like I’m watching it for the first time. This film has and will always have a special place in my heart. I think late last year or early this year, there were rumors that a sequel was in early stages of production but idk if that’s true. I hope there is a sequel at some point.
It's a genuine delight to watch movies with folks who know what they're about in the movie industry, there's a depth of knowledge there that can't be found elsewhere. I'd always felt that there was something off about the film but it wasn't until when y'all pointed out the plethora of flat characters that it made sense that's what it was.
I love this film. I did a personal double feature of it and Moneyball back in 2011 when they were in theaters. Had an absolute blast. Really the only thing that I had trouble with the film is it is set in 2020. So even when it was brand new I was thinking, "There's no way in hell we get all this in just 9 years", which turns the film from a near future sci-fi to an alternate history sci-fi film for me.
There is a very similar movie to this one starring Sylvester Stallone called "Over the Top". The big difference is they replace robot boxing with arm wrestling but basically the same storyline.
Absolutely loved this movie. Yes, it’s cliched and you can see everything coming from a mile away, but the action the performances, the chemistry and the pure love that’s into every scene and interaction makes a very fun, endearing and entertaining watch. They talked about a sequel for a very long time, but unfortunately it never came…and now, after so many years and with the kid now a 24 year old, the magic just isn’t the same.
I love this movie and still do. I used to own the DVD for this movie (probably still have it somewhere in my basement) and I always loved watching thbehind-the-sceneses. THIS MOVIE is peak tbh. The fact that Charlie started out a cocky person to a good father, was amazing. If it wasn't for Max charlie would of still been in debt. And the only reason Charlie lost with Ambush and Noisy Boy is because he wasn't confident in his own ability as a boxer. He would always take the easy way out. Using the combinations that was already there when they bought noisy boy. Instead of using his own boxing ability because he would think he's not good enough. Not until we see him training with Atom. Using his moveset and using his abilities as a boxer to win. And the fact in the last fight against Zeus. Zeus is made to have extreme power to make fights go faster. Which when you compare to Atom, he has extremely good defense because he's a sparring bot. He was made to take a beating. And use that with the skills of an experienced boxer who only got knockouts when they won and you have yourself a really good damn robot. That's why Zeus didn't last that long in the 5th round because he wasn't made for it. But goddamn this movie is amazing and I really love it. They made the characters really good and have their own personalities. And the fact that is now getting more recognition then it did when it came out is making me extremely happy. Peak movie
Wtf. Yeah it’s like 3am here and I just started watching clips from this movie since I loved it a lot as a kid and fell down the rabbit hole. I just searched “first time watching Real Steel” and bam, you guys uploaded a couple of hours ago. Crazy timing. 🤯
How come you guys didn't watch this before. This movie was a huge hit in Malaysia back in 2011. The theatres were fully packed for at least a few weeks. I was 16 back then, and this was the first movie my father allowed me to go and watch it alone. I'm happy to see adults enjoying this film. Its like exposing their inner child.
Based on the short story, "Steel" by Richard Matheson, where in 1973, Robots are used to fight in boxing matches. It was turned into an episode of The Twilight Zone, Season 5, episode 2, starring Lee Marvin.
I always loved the entire Zeus fight scenes. The hype behind the guys playing the announcers made these scenes incredible. “ATOM HAS LANDED A PUNCH” and “ZEUS IS DOWN” made those moments way more hype, without them it wouldn’t have been that great.
I have so much love for this movie, and it makes me cry every damn time. The bones of the story might be old hat, but the meat they put on those bones absolutely set it apart, and both leads were perfectly cast. I'm SO glad they never made a sequel, tbh.
When I first saw this I wasn't expecting much from a CGI movie like this. But it is a solid boxing movie, I've been boxing for a while and great choreographed boxing always gets me amped!
People are gonna see this movie in the future and going to say this movie had everything, 12 years from 2011 and it is still amazing and refreshing to watch!!
Real steel wasn’t my cup of tea when I first watched it because I liked action more than the scenes, but it’s a really well done movie. The love interest is super underdeveloped but other than that, it’s such a vibrant world. Weirdly colorful characters that fit. And a standard plot that gives you all that you want. Nice to see some Marvel characters take on new adventures in this universe.
This is the best reaction I have ever seen on anything!
In my opinion Real steel and Rise of the guardians are most underrated movies
Absolutely banger of a movie, this was my favorite movie from my childhood and is still one of my top favs
Such an awesome concept for a movie. I wish they made another one, but I loved how Big Hero 6's beginning reminded me of this movie.
