Been a while but if I remember right you cross into wilderness a long way before the lakes. No atvs, no bikes, etc. Hooves, paws and feet that’s about it.
Would think any bears would be down for the big nap by that point, but you never know. Mountains are already getting blasted pretty good with snow too.
Interesting overnighter. Surprised you were able to steady your camera in that wind to get the Milky Way shot. Just curious what you use for food storage above tree line?
For that shot I had the tripod lowered to about a foot off the ground and protected as best it could be in the tent vestibule with me leaning my full weight on the legs, lol. At 100% zoom there is still a little motion blur in the shot. I carry a Bearikade cannister ( wild-ideas.net ). Not the cheapest, but one of the lighter food cans you can find. Not too worried about bears at these altitudes, but it keeps the critters out too. I just jam it under a boulder 50 yards from camp or so.
Looks like a beautiful trip...minus the wind.
Seems like I had my fair share of windy mountain nights last year, lol. Definitely a beautiful place though!
Used to 4 wheel all the way to first lake can you still do that?

That's too bad. It is sooo beautifully up there. Did my Humboldt twice years ago
Certainly looks like a place worth giving another chance in the future.
If I'm planning to backpack South Colony in late November would a bear cannister even be needed? Would think not.
