It's awesome to see Maor in the serie. He is the best mastering engineer I've had the chance to work with. Thank you Warren for the great videos you put out.
one of the coolest audio quotes from a guest in your series and probably even in life "Like everything in life every day you wake up differently and you think differently. You might have the same mind set but one day your hearing I want to hear more high end the other day it’s like I want it warmer - you know". (Maor Applebaum)
Hi +Mat Melton Agreed 100% AMAZING! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I love what Maor says here about auditioning gear/changes and deeply considering whether the change is better or if it just perks him up because it's different. Reminds me of when I was a kid visiting the eye doctor for the first time- A few minutes in and I was frustrated, eyes dilated, sitting on a phone book on chair in that dark room, looking through the giant binocular looking thingy, stuck between two completely blurry lens options, with the doctor asking me, "which looks better these or *click* these." Somewhere along the way I had made a grave mistake. We eventually started all over just like Maor does.
Hi +Bryce Hodge Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes Maor is a wonderful guy!! Great philosophy! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Hi +Gordon Gidluck Yes Maor is a great guy! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
With the amount of equipment shown, it would take a genius just to figure out how this matrix would be interconnected. The cabling must be truly complex. This guy has some extremely awesome audio gear. Must have taken several years to progress to the stage we are all admiring. Too many decisions and options for me to handle at this point in my mastering career. I'd be curious how much this guy charges for his projects. I think it would be safe to say he has probably half a million or more invested. Overall what I find amazing is that although I've seen most of this equipment in other mastering facilities, no two engineers completely agree on their layout and audio chain. This is what makes mastering as artful as any other process in music production. Most mastering engineers have the same goal in mind of taking what give them to where you want to be. There just simply isn't two facilities that have the same template of equipment or perception of how to get there. Truly one of the best and complete videos on the topic. Thanks for sharing...

Great video, Warren. Being a gear junkie, I always love seeing lots of great gear and he's got plenty of it. I would think that being a mastering engineer is a bit like being a race car driver in that when you drive a really high performance car for work, your daily driver seems boring by comparison just like when you listen through such high quality gear, listening on any other system would pail in comparison. Thanks again for the effort and time.

Amazing Video. Thank you Warren and Maor for turning us on to the fine details of a pro level mastering studio. Really good insights. Amazing to see the different types of gear being used. That only thing I would like to see added to these discussions going forward is an inquiry into room treatment. Many mastering engineers consider this to be one of the most important (if not the most important) considerations in designing their studios. It's a glarying oversight to exclude this info from the discussion.

(Two Notes Torpedo Studio rack). It's always good to share ideas with others as we are all in this together. I learned that from you lol. Anyway, I have many many tube guitar amps as you might remember. Everything from Marshalls to bogglers and Jim Kelly's. But from that point I need to learn the best ways to mic an amp cab and the R121 and a 57 seems to do the trick usually for me (and everyone else lol). However I have had the need for silent recording and have used and purchased the Mesa Cab Clone then I went to the Palmer 4 and finely I found one that not only works but FAR exceeds the rest and its Two Note's Torpedo Studio model. It is a gold find. Best thing since the Dynamount Mic Stand. If you don't have one, I know you are going to love it...even purists like myself love it. So far I have used my Bogner XTC 2 and my Vox 30 through it and WOW!!! Love your work Warren. Now I can get on to some real recording..:)
Hi Warren: great and insightful video as always! Love your approach to sharing your great knowledge! I do this (performing and producing music)for a living, but it's always great to hear even the basics when told in such a detailed manner. There's (almost) always a different and interesting angle. And even if you already know that angle: it's always great having it confirmed by the best of the best. Learning is a lifelong process. But of course you know that better than anyone :-) Thanks for sharing all that great knowledge!
All very true! The pros have experience and gear that is FAR beyond what us average schmucks have - and proper acoustic spaces too. Its worth the money going pro....
Which converter is he referring to when he is says he doesn't use the Crane Song HEDD tape effect processing as he already gets a great tape effect and "head bump" from converter? See 16:50....Cheers

Warren, your hair has grown back quickly, hahaha! Thanks for the great video, very interesting! Maor has the Neumann KH310 monitors, which I mentioned/recommended to you a couple of weeks ago (I have the smaller KH120s) - did you have a chance to listen to them while you were there? If Maor reads this: I noticed the amp for the PMC speakers is standing on IsoAcoustics monitor stands - why is that? It's also the first time I saw two Recoil stabilizers on top of each other under a monitor :) Many thanks, David
Hi +David Mood Haha yes I filmed Pre Haircut! Haha. Yes Maor Rocks! So generous of hm to take the time to show us around his studio! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Brilliant video, I have been wondering about software vs hardware these days, digital vs analogue, in a way you could say it is like spirit vs body, perhaps running the song through hardware, humanizes the song a bit, giving the spirit a body, making it live.
Hi Paul, thanks for the great question! I know many great Mastering Engineers who work in Analog and many who stay in Digital! The guy behind the gear is definitely the most important thing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Warren, I have a couple questions. First, do you send your final stereo mix to be mastered or do you send all the tracks and have the mastering engineer create the stereo mix? Second, when you're producing what makes you decide whether something needs to be sent out for mastering? Thanks, Andy
Hi +FPofSTV Great questions! I only send the final two track mix to the Mastering Engineer. If I can I always send to a Professional mastering Engineer to get those last set of ears on the Mix, it really comes down to the budget! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
When I had my ‘demo’ mastered in the good old days, I couldn’t tell the difference and it cost lots of money. I don’t think any thought was given to my 3 tracks in order either. Unfortunately, all I could do was look at the gear as I had no idea what I wanted. These days, I would be very sure about the sound. Anyway, my demo got me what I wanted in the end! Oh...beyond the colour and tone, fab filter can do all this now!
Awesome video. Great points about auditioning at the end too. How many times have we all had to start over from scratch? In a pipe dream we'd have a one-plugin-for-all. lol
Hi +Robert McCormick Great, what's the AT101? Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro what converters does he use, when he speaks about the crane song he mentions the tape simulation...what converters is he using now that sounds like tape without the simulation.
+mark bell I saw that on the website I believe, I've heard good things about those converters... I use Prism Sound and prefer those but I do understand why some prefer the more flavored converter, it makes sense to have different flavors the same same way you might have different mic pres.
Hi +Kevin St Croix Wonderful! Glad you didn't! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Does anyone know what his current converters he is using in his chain is? He did talk about using the crane song previously.. could not see the newer converters he was referencing in the video.. thanks in advanced!
Hi Warren..You are really good musician, good sound engineer and good person..i almost watched all your videos and They are really helpfull.Thank you very much for these amazing videos.i am trying a create a good setup to my budget ..i bought a focusrite 2i2 audio interface for and Beyerdynamic dt770 80 ohm headphone..But microphones are really hard things to decide...i want to buy Rode Nt1- or Nt1-A or SE X1..i will record vocal and acoustic guitar with mic.Which one should i choose u think?
Hi +scmete mete Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! I don't have first hand experience of the Rode yet, I am going to try one out so I can speak authoritatively about them. I have used the Se and I believe they are wonderful value for money! Always interesting and informative. Is it the general mindset of the mastering engineer that keeps their work spaces so devoid of studio paraphernalia? I've never seen a coffee cup in any of them?! Really enjoyed watching this vid. Hope you're well.
Hi +Jude Connelly haha I have actually seen a few coffee cups around some mastering studios! But yes generally mastering attracts the analytical mind quite often! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Yeah that's really not too surprising, if you'd spent a decade(s) of your life researching/ hunting down(unless its relatively new, this can sometimes take years to find a specific piece of gear at a reasonable price)/ investing in/building & modding/metering,testing,benchmarking, optimizing,-& then extensively A/Bing it against another amazing piece of gear, the winner of the shootout being kept... (w/ some your veteren pieces of kit having outlasted a dozen or more contenders). Anyways, only a fool would sit a coffeecup/drink anywhere near a desk with aprox. Id guess here somwhere between $35k--$65k, of super rare & amazing gear, most long out of production, some potentially custom 1 of akind pieces or at least super low production numbers, plus the top notch modifications done to many of the pieces possibly over many decades, etc. .... yeah no joke, dead serious... I'd have a bunch of children's sippy cups on hand, & if you have to have a drink in the studio.... your drinking it out of that spill proof sippy cup.
loved the video, was distracted from what Maor was saying by Warren over using the work 'right', as an interviewer give your interviewee time to talk uninterrupted?
I love that line about just because you hear a change doesn't mean it's the right thing or that it's good.==Regarding Pultecs, this is how it was explained to me. Back in the day engineers would like the color of an EQ and wanted a way to get the color of a boost without having to boost so the Pultec was invented. You boost, get that color and extra harmonics and the attenuate to lessen the boost (all or some). Mix the two to taste. Is this right?
+L. Scott Music Not quite, the attenuation frequency on the low band starts higher up than the boost frequency, so if you boost 5 and attenuate 5, you get the boost but the attenuation has started slightly higher up, which cuts into the boost providing a softening effect yet not nullifying the boost. The colour of itwould be there regardless of boosting or cutting, just running through it will change the sound. Get a Pultec emu(new one by Ignite Amps is pretty decent) and open it in VST Analyzer and you will see curves, or search Pultec curves.
Maor is a really gentle guy. He even couple of times replied to my emails when I was seeking for advice on a piece of outboard gear.

Thank you. Very nice presentation.
the low cut and boost on a pultec are both shelves, not bells. the high boost is a bell and the high cut is a shelf.
Thanks Matt for the insight! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Nice interview keep the analog alive
Hi +drexel moliere Thanks for watching and commenting! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
The wizard behind the curtain.
When I had my ‘demo’ mastered in the good old days, I couldn’t tell the difference and it cost
lots of money. I don’t think any thought was given to my 3 tracks in order either. Unfortunately,
all I could do was look at the gear as I had no idea what I wanted. These days, I would be very
sure about the sound. Anyway, my demo got me what I wanted in the end!
Oh...beyond the colour and tone, fab filter can do all this now!
Awesome video. Great points about auditioning at the end too. How many times have we all had to start over from scratch? In a pipe dream we'd have a one-plugin-for-all. lol
Thanks Maor. Great video dude.
Very cool Maor!
Where's the Analoguetube AT-101?
Hi +Robert McCormick Great, what's the AT101? Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro what converters does he use, when he speaks about the crane song he mentions the tape simulation...what converters is he using now that sounds like tape without the simulation.
Hi +bigdap100 Great question! I'll ask him next time I see him for sure! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro I'd be interested in this as well please..he doesnt state the name of the new converters (unless ive missed it)
+bigdap100 He is using JCF Audio's Latte and their AD8
+mark bell I saw that on the website I believe, I've heard good things about those converters... I use Prism Sound and prefer those but I do understand why some prefer the more flavored converter, it makes sense to have different flavors the same same way you might have different mic pres.
Does anybody know how you can modify those API 5500 eq’s? What does does mean?
great program!
Hi +Fezzler61 thanks very much! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I almost skipped this video. It was nice to hear the his examples.
Hi +Kevin St Croix Wonderful! Glad you didn't! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Some nice tips in here from Maor, thanks.
Hi +Rob Husband Yes Maor is fantastic!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great Interview thank you
Thanks ever so much
Does anyone know what his current converters he is using in his chain is? He did talk about using the crane song previously.. could not see the newer converters he was referencing in the video.. thanks in advanced!
Lovely video. Can anyone perhaps tell me what the small little speakers are on top of the medium sized ones? Thanks.
They're Auratone copies called "Ref Tones." He mentions them in the video.
how comparing the "Manley Massive Passive" to the "SPL PQ"?
Practically, a collection of different High end EQs and Compressors. In the very end he makes his point.
Hi +George Mitsikas Yes amazing gear indeed! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Nice system! Go Maor!
Thanks for sharing
Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Thank you very much for your answer Warren..Have a marvellous time u2..
Hi +scmete mete you're welcome! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
those tall isolation panels, where can I get those?
Hey Warren, so my question is how much mastering engineer like him charge for one song to master. ANY IDEA.
Howzabout you play some music through that kit??
loved the video, was distracted from what Maor was saying by Warren over using the work 'right', as an interviewer give your interviewee time to talk uninterrupted?
hahaha! right ?
dang, that Maselec MTC-1X is incredible! fully loaded!
+Seany06 Roger that. Thanks!
thanks for this really good details :)
No SSL comp in a mastering studio?
Great guy, amazing gear!
