I rode this route to West Trenton years ago when I lived in Jersey. There’s always talk for many years that New Jersey Transit would bring back the West Trenton line that was discontinued in 1981. This is a line New Jersey transit needs to bring back and soon.

I used to live along this line. The train tracks were my backyard, down the embankment. ‘Between Somerton and Trevose.

Forest Hills is named for a cemetery about a quarter mile to the left. My parents are buried there, and I expect to be as well.

I’m a daily SEPTA rider and this video shows the exact reason why I don’t ride regional rail anymore. The reduced speeds make the train go extremely slow and it’s too expensive for that kind of slow and infrequent service. Also why weren’t the announcements playing?

The engineer has to type in the train ID into their keypad. If they don't the announcements don't work.

When I lived in Delaware County years ago, SEPTA referred to their commuter trains as "High Speed Lines". What a joke! I never rode any of the ex-Reading lines, and while this one is a bit faster than the Elwyn line, it still runs (IMO) too slow in too many places. In my opinion, it's still a very shabby system when compared to the LIRR and other commuter lines I've tried. Thanks for the video.

It might interest you to know that at our meeting on Friday, I brought up our former rail line that used to connect with SEPTA at West Trenton. That line ended service in 1981. I pointed out that the climate for Federal funding is good now, certainly better than it was in the previous administration in Washington. Staff is well aware of that line, but informed me that it isn't a 'front burner' project at this time. But they claim to be making every effort to preserve the line intact for future restoration. They agree with the need and desire to restore service on the line. But they claim it's a matter of funding. Yes, more funds are available with Biden, but there are many projects on the drawing board fighting for a share of the funding. I requested that the line be brought back to the status of actively being discussed. They agreed, since I brought it up.
I also discussed the Lackawanna Cut-off and where it currently stands. Staff told me that work continues on the line and the projection for service to begin is 2025. I was told that a lot more work than originally anticipated in Andover had to be done, but it's progressing nicely. There is also an issue with rock slides in places. So we should see trains on the line in about three years.

"Nice straight track". If I'm not mistaken, this was the right of way for the B&O express trains back in the day. Royal Blue zipped through here at very non-dawdling speeds!

I'm quite sure that 306 runs express to Jenkintown and local to West Trenton, but not all Silverliner 5s run that service.

What happens with your senior Key Card when you cross over into New Jersey at West Trenton? Or into Trenton on the NE Corridor or down into the stations in Delaware? Do they collect a half-fare from you? I personally never had the problem {back when I was well enough to ride around} I'd simply flash my NJT pass, which SEPTA and Amtrak honors. Those guys commute on our trains.

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking SEPTA would collect a fare for the part of the ride that's out of state. I'm going to test it some day.

i wonder why the stations at Melrose have that big gap? was there a layover track there during the Reading days? Reading's Newtown Branch used to cut the diamonds right about Bethayres. The line north of Woodbourne is owned by CSX if i remember.

there used to be a pocket track to allow express, it's owned north of neshaminy falls by csx, but septa and csx have worked out a separation agreement for independent dispatching of the tracks
