  • What Is A Real French Drain?
    We are replacing one of those peanut pipe styrofoam french drains. The homeowner had somebody put in catch basins with peanut pipe and it failed. I just wanted to explain a little bit why this failed and why this was not the right product for this particular install.
    We don't use styrofoam peanut pipe no matter what we believe in a real french drain, a true french drain with gravel. Reason being, if you put dirt on top of a styrofoam french drain the weight of the dirt compresses the styrofoam and then you lose all your voids so now you can't move water. So that's what happened here.

    All I can say is I’m sitting in the middle of hurricane Ian here in Florida and i can’t be happier and more prepared with the 209 foot Baughman tile French drain I installed myself over a year ago! Learned everything here on FDM TH-cam ..Two 4inch high octane French drains plus a solid gold tapped in all my four gutters plus one neighbors on one side- will post action as long as I make it out alive

    Thanks for these awesome videos. QQ: Doesn't the grass growing through the fabric compromise the corrugated pipe over time, piercing the protective fabric and allowing dirt and rocks to flow in? Is that just lifecycle problem for all french drains?

    Great videos. I sure wish you'd expand your coverage area further north. I'm getting to old for the diy stuff anymore.

    Great demo- So you focused on pipe strength here as it was along the edge of the driveway - losing 2inches of pipe diameter with a 6 inch French drain pipe (versus two 4inch high octane)

      The nominal cross section of 6” pipe is 3.1429 x 9 = 28.29 sq inches; nom cross section of 4” pipe is 3.1429 x 4 = 12.5716 sq inches (times 2 pipes = 25.14 sq inches total) So you actually pick up 12% more cross section/capacity with the 6” diameter. Nominal calls for illustration. Thanks for all the great info.!

    I have this same issue but in my backyard patio, water pools up against the side of the grass with no where to go. Only problem is I would need roughly 3 90 degree turns in order to go along all sides of the patio. Is something like this possibly with turns?

    If you don’t have sod ready or you tossed it cuz you’re doing this yourself and it’s taking forever.. is it ok to cover the fabric with dirt or do you recommend cutting some sod from another part of the yard and using that instead

    Are you moving away from plywood to the synthetic mats?

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN
      @FRENCHDRAINMAN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. We to a chance on about 6k in mats and it's so much better than plywood. At first the guys thought I was nuts to pay $200 a mat but now they want more. We absolutely love them.

      @@FRENCHDRAINMAN 👍🏼 doing the math looks like pay back on them would be about 6 -6.5 yrs over the plywood for us...so hard to make that jump
