What a legend this man was, having been at the top of his game in a scene that didn't really exist yet. It's sad Matthew Davis didn't live to see a greater recognition of his talent, but he'll live in in our memories as a sophisticated, talented visionary of the music world. Rest in peace.

I was intrigued by your comment and did some searching. As I listened to the beautiful music, I found a website written by someone who became friends with Matt online. I found my eyes welling up as I read through the page dedicated to the memory of him.

I think music is a nice way to experience the spirit, although the body has died, when it was alive it etched itself into a sound sphere and then you see that thier music lives on, even though they are dead, they are still alive in the sound and when you hear it you feel thier heart still beating, captured in eternity, forgotten or remebered, we are all living sounds that speak truth to one another not with words, but by our creations that come from places other

These cover arts of the dungeon synth....truly evoke a realm of fantasy in our minds that we can't truly grasp...but yet since we know it exists within our minds we are grateful. It's like a very dark and grim yet fantastical world, filled with dragons, legends, tavern-tales, great and mighty warriors, lost kingdoms hidden from the world, only to be found in the farthest reaches of the unknown, and dungeons of course.
Which brings an idea to my mind, we all need to gather up all the pictures of these dungeon synth covers and use them as the picture settings for DND haha yes

( and yes, I love Burzum, Mortiis, Old Sorcery, Secret Stairway, etc). And if I said this world exists in another dimension, would you go all tech and say NFW? Please dont answer that. lol

Dear Cyrus, Matt was an exquisite letter-writer. He had the most incredible spidery handwriting and he used all kinds of color inks. His letters always contained little drawings or silly gifts, like stuff you'd get out of a gumball machine or at a Halloween store. He didn't always express himself well in person, but if you were lucky enough to be one of his many penpals, then you would have gotten to know to know him for real.

    PLEASE READ THIS:
Matt Davis, the man who gave us the immortal late-90s Secret Stairways albums we never deserved but got, was understandably living the exact life that I myself live -- a life of complete and total uncertainty, with too many unanswered questions that only Matt Davis himself had the answer to. I would imagine after the release of 1999's Turning Point he himself had his own turning point, as this was arguably the last known opus he would make. I say last known, because after 1999 he lost his way and never found it again, as in 2011 -- ten months before dungeon synth got its much-needed recognition -- he lost his battle within himself.
Now, ten years later, I find myself in his uncomfortable shoes, and those same unanswered questions that he struggled for twelve years to answer now fall on me to answer. Many of humankind's most talented musicians are and were also complete unknowns who never got their dues as much as they should have in life -- and, those same unsung heroes of the music industry also had debilitating mental illnesses which very few around them could truly dare to understand. I have over fifty albums successfully recorded and composed across my own four musical projects spanning almost nine years, though I seriously doubt I'll ever afford to copyright any of the over 220 tracks across said material that I have allowed myself the time to make over that span of time dating back to my first metal demo from November 2013 to March 2014. I believe entirely that my music, if it ever sees a release, might revolutionize the entire music industry forever and allow all those who have the same demons that plagued a Matt Davis or a Morgan the Bard or others of similar genres and backgrounds to get the opportunity to share their creations with the world and all who dwell in it.
All things considered, Matt Davis, though not nearly as prolific as a Jim Kirkwood or a Mortiis, is an example of true, unsung talent who was far ahead of his time. More than likely, Matt Davis would have made a huge comeback had he not died in early 2011 as a result of him taking his own life -- and that, of course, is one of the greatest what-if stories in any genre of music ever.

If I''m not mistaken, the cover picture was used on Dimmu Borgir's debut album, For all tid, which came out in 1994

The original is illustration by Gustave Doré for Idylls of the King by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

It's also the cover for Enid's s/t EP from 1997. It's used a lot, but can you blame them? It makes for an awesome cover.

And it's also called the return of the king and was used in Dimmu Borgir's for all tid album cover...

It's also used for Eternal Darkness (SWE) - Doomed in 1992. There's also a noisecore band which uses the same cover.
