This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "putting speed tips" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Graysonyon Putter Prolific - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my mate got great success with it.
@Paulo Castro so how did you guys all incorporate your individual skills in a group where it's easy for distractions and clash of ideas to arise? My college classmates (I'm a first-time college student) are forming study groups for the courses I take and I don't know how that will work out online and without someone ruining the experience.. also sorry for the year-late reply haha
@@Amber-me2wz Hi, I agree that most of the time group studying never works but there was one time in my life where in I was part of the first section and half of my classmates were honor students out of our batch out of 10 sections. Me and my other friends have had a struggle on this particular Physics lessons, if I remember correctly and we asked for help from our male classmate who is really excellent in mathematics , he spent the whole morning explaining the 2 month lesson in the library and somehow I understood the whole calculations and had the best grades in my group of friends on the particular calculations part of the test. With this experience, I think that the intention and the kind of people you are studying with is what matters the most. However, other than math subjects I don't group recommend studying with other people. PS. I'm not a super smart student. That year was just my lucky year. But don't get me wrong, with a lot of smarty-pants in class it felt like every body was eager to become excellent that time because of the pressure the other students gave off. My classmates were intellectual but our environment was toxic it was more on who scores the best than getting along with other classmates.
This man is a genius, I have adhd and am starting to cope with it and I honestly believe that these techniques work, not meaning to sound cheesy or anything like that
I was also made to watch this by my college professor for extra credit. I was procrastinating to get around to getting the assignment done. Our extra credit is simply to watch the video series and write a summary, along with answering some questions. I am very glad I decided to do the extra credit, because I certainly will go over this video series more than just this once. Over the next few years of college, and then medical school. This is very vital information for me to absorb and put into practice. Thank you.
my third year into uni starts in two weeks and watching this playlist makes me feel more confident and empowered to step up my study game. i wish i watched this video sooner!
Personally, I've always felt that writing notes by hand instead of typing helps me retain information better. Seems more tactile, like the physical act of writing means you're also scribing it into your memory, or mentally looking at it, turning it over and around, then shelving it into your memory so you can find it again later. Don't really get that sense from typing. Also, it's easier to me if you have to change gears and sketch out a quick diagram into your notes if by hand. Just a personal preference of mine, I respect if you get more out of typing notes instead of handwriting notes.
I learned that using a concept map can be a study Strategy to use and leaving out unnecessary information will also help and studying groups sometimes don't help but seating a goal for the group of what to do then it will help.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I have looked all over the internet on how to effectively study and nothing has given any realistic tips until this video!
I learned that generating questions that make me analyze any implications or make connections are more meaningful to my overall understanding of the concept.
I'm studying music and this reinforced things I do already but also taught me things like metacognition. For note taking I think memory mapping is better to do, as it also uses these concepts and is more effective in many ways, while standard note taking doesn't really allow you to ingest the material being discussed as well because you are too busy multitasking to pay enough attention and things will get lost in your short term memory. Chunking is probably taught in his class, and is something else that is very important to know and use which many people seem to never know or forget about.
I have learned some from your videos. I am working on getting my teaching license and have found the whole world of "Educational Psychology" is great and I can see some considerable value. Your information as compared to what I have had to complete for the courses required is much more valuable. Thanks
When I studied biology for the first time,I also memorized every single words before. However, I realized that biology is not something that I can master just by memorizing a whole bunch of terms.Instead, it's important to understand the concepts and try to apply them in real situation such as symptoms of diseases..
One of the best vidios on studying I've ever seen. Discussed all the relevent aspects of learning Based on concrete facts and proofs Just what students need Well In India, where I come from,we have a hell load to study......I hope the release some vidio On how to study a lot of things in a short time and one on how to study during exams
I use highlighting mainly for bringing structure to a syllabus or powerpoint (some professors are surprisingly bad at this), eg. highlighting titles of different sections in blue, highlighting subtitles in green and finally using a yellow highlight for marking important concepts. This way I'm forced to think about how different sections relate to each other. I think highlighting can be a greal tool when done right, but it's never going to replace the actual studying.
That is quite lucid and well explained Prof Chew....Thank you very much....I shall pass it on to many others who are embarking on academic journeys or helping their kids form optimal learning habits...
This only works if the professor tells you these information and you have enough personal experience . Sometimes the teacher who is teaching us even don't understand the subject.
I read the paragraph about Freud. And as I was reading I created an image of the concept in the question. When I compared the concept of iceberg to the highlighted parts, it was obvious how highlighting, in this case, fails. And speaking of the "Freud" paragraph. First part is just a background information, pretty irrelevant for understanding the concept itself. Relevance of the concept starts with the Iceberg. I wouldn't even use highlighting as suggested by the professor Chew. Probably wouldn't even bother remembering the _titles_ of categories (conscious, preconscious, uncouscious) unless they were easy to remember. I'd opt for understanding the concept only. I wanted to study psychology so I bought some books about it, and it was like those school books, full of alien terms I didn't understand. I bought books from OSHO and got the explanation I wanted lol.
So I will be doing Pre Med next year because I am a senior in high school this year. How should I study for all my classes each day and study for tests or exams??
+Bogdan Kosilov You can. eg. How is addition different from subtraction? How will you be expected to remember how to subtract, add, divide. You learn the concept then compare it to other concepts.
So, I'm confused. I have subtitles on, and the text in the video says, "Keep ultimate goal of learning in mind" and yet the subtitles, which havent caught up to the video yet, which is still captioning the last thing he said, is, "if you aren't prepared and can't contribute, don't come" (in reference to group study). Is this or is this not a massive contradiction? This guy seems very black and white on things.
I don't like highlighting, period. I believe that's the lazy substitution of taking notes from the book. The point is trying to trick your brain into believing as much as possible that the information you are learning is important for your survival.
I agree what he's teaching and the method but when he asked the question " what's the most important factor in successful learning" he chose "what you think about while studying". The number 4 answer was "time spent". To do all that he ask requires a significant amount time. No method of studying works without time spent.
What's funny is that these videos are a paradox. They are intended for people who need help with learning, but how would someone learn effectively from these videos if they are bad learners?
I know that I am like 9 years too late but for anatomy you have to understand the origins of the body parts and the names of the body parts, because then it becomes a little easier, for example the pedal is the foot, which is the same in latin, and the same for a pedal in a car, which you press with your foot. For sciences and maths where it is more than just memorizing the concept the best way to apply the study methods mentioned in this video is to understand what is connected where, how it affects your life, and what the components of the structures are.
Also, if you relate concepts from each chapter, you might have better understand of the subject. After doing these, my biology exam scores significantly improved in my high school... My high school teacher gave us questions which are similar to MCAT questions.. Evil man...:(
i was forced to watch this by my college class but i actually learned a lot about effective study habits so thanks dr. chew

I will never do group study ever. No one ever comes prepared, people only want to "study" together because they don't want to study.
Have you tried Scott Brueckner's method?

Incidentally, more evidence shows support for handwriting notes over typing notes for better memory and understanding.
I always thought that generating questions when reading material could be awkward or difficult, but Dr.Chew made it seem a lot easier!

Lets be honest, most subjects can't be deep processed. How am I going to connect a math equation to something significant?
+Bogdan Kosilov You can. eg. How is addition different from subtraction? How will you be expected to remember how to subtract, add, divide. You learn the concept then compare it to other concepts.
