Great transformation 👏 thanks for explaining each cut you make, it really helps beginners like me understand how you got from a little bush to a little tree 🌳 😀
Always remember it is a marathon and not a sprint. You are setting the tree up now for future seasons growth. Acquiring this mindset is the game changer.
Do not be worried if you find it drops most if not all of its leaves. I found it happened to both of my trees however within a month they both began to sprout back beautifuly.
Looks really good Nigel. I'm pre-planning getting ideas for training this season. I appreciate your advice. Been watching it for around 4 years when I started bonsai. I tend to binge watch trying to glean as much knowledge as possible. I'm hooked like so many of us. Your love for bonsai is inspiring. As you know it is such an enjoyable hobby and I've already amassed a collection of around 100 trees. Also enjoy seeing Connor's collection as well. Thanks for sharing!
Morning Nigel. I’m a bonsai noob from sunny Arizona and loving this new passion. Got my first Fukien and slightly trimmed and repotted.. seemed pot bound. And it’s summer here in Arizona now. Your site has become my first go to place for inspiration and knowledge. I can feel your enthusiastic approach and subtle humor. 😊… thanks for all you do.
Thank you for this video. I was gifted my first Fukien Tea tree bonsai and was not sure the best way to trim it. Usually I grow elephant jade and jade bonsais. How do I propagate the trimmings?
hmm... that first branch you remove, personally i would have used it as the apex. the thick branch i would have wired and made it part of the new apex. my thoughts is to add movement to the tree. just my 2 cents.
Been struggling with my fukien just aimlessly pruning but this video gave me much needed inspiration and insight ill let her do her thing for a while then approach it with a new set of eyes. Thank you so much
I have one too. Since 1 year. Thinking about taking it out of the bonsai pot and putting it in a bigger pot to try to make it a bit taller (about 15 cm now). Great job !
The tree looks great Nigel, my fukien tea isn't doing that well, it is dropping leaves, they seem to be drying out. Not sure if it is due to the light level change but hopefully it won't die
Hello Nigel…just came across this video as I was researching fukien bonsai…just bought one from lowes here in Illinois…any tips on raising this type of bonsai in the mid-west while living in an apartment!! Thankyou in advance 🙏🏽
I was trying to find out if you can make tea from these leaves, but I couldn't find any articles on this species. I'm sure you could, but I don't want to take any chances!!
@@TheBonsaiZone I remember reading that you can use young leaves to make a tea similar to green tea. But it's probably better to be on the safer side if you can't find a source of reliable info.
Hey Mr. Nigel, hope you're having a great day and hope it isn't as hot up there as it is down here in Louisiana 8b... It's brutal here. It was 89° here last Christmas. I'm curious where it is that you keep your fukiens in the winter? Laissez Les Bon Tempes Rouler, Trent
Hey Nigel, best of luck with that little beauty as they can be a bit tricky. I got my 1st one from Jerome and Mari when they were still in Ft.Lauderdale and now have 4 thriving nicely. They do great with morning sun/afternoon shade when the season allows.
The “effing” Tea Tree. I killed one of these due to not providing sufficient winter protection, and now have another (with a lovely thick, tapering trunk) which is currently in my conservatory until the weather warms up here in Wakefield, the UK, when it will go back out on my bonsai benches. Notoriously difficult. I’m sure you are up to the challenge Nigel 😃 Mostly avoid sub zero temperatures which WILL kill it.
Nice little Fukien Tree Nigel, my wife got me one for Christmas but Amazon sent the worse looking tree they had 😱 hopefully it grows this spring and I can make a video to share
I would keep it by a cool window and that should be fine. I have overwintered mine for many ,many years without a cool period and it has done well. A cool period is best, but it should do alright indoors.
I'm surprised this is fairly new for you, I see these guys at hardware stores all the time as bonsai. Had one once but it got aphids and scale and I couldn't save it 😕
Hey Nigel, great video as always :) Have you noticed the pleasent smell while cutting the tree ? I also have one of these and really like the fresh citrusy smell. Maybe its stronger on young branches
Great video, I love Fukien teas! In my experience, they’ve grown vigorously nonstop year-round and seem quite happy. Had mine for about 3 years now and it’s been going strong. Flowering endlessly and very content, so it was interesting to hear you talk about dormancy. I was wondering what you thought of that - is this something that will come back to bite me eventually if I don’t allow proper dormancy?
As a regular houseplant grower I'm all in for the green and not so much for the trunk, so the species with very small leaves are kind of the least interesting, so I think I skip this one.

Great job Nigel! It’s looking Fukien great! 🤣 These little trees are so cute. 😍
Thanks Jay, I'm sure it will bring me many hours of joy....or frustration!!!!
Been looking forward to this video when I mentioned that I had a Fukien Tea tree during one of your premiers a few weeks back.
Do not be worried if you find it drops most if not all of its leaves. I found it happened to both of my trees however within a month they both began to sprout back beautifuly.
Hoh thank god and thank you for this comment
Good to know!
Thats a beauty that one. Exceptional form after your pruning work. It will be fun to see how it develops.
Fukien tea are super easy to propagate. I have a few varieties and I just stick them in any soil and in a few weeks they are rooted.
Nice demonstration of selecting the right branches and decision making process of pruning the unwanted branches.

Fukien tea.. beautiful bonsai material ,, great sharing brother ..
Thanks, I hope I can take good care of it!!!
Nice work Nigel. She looks great.
Watch for aphids. Especially when it comes indoors. Great video.
This is a truly cute little tree. You did a fantastic job on trimming it. Little trees in bonsai has such character. Well done !
Thank you very much!
I must say, I find the warning "Big cut coming up!"to be pleasingly respectful.💯

Like others said, very instructive and cuts really made sense.
That's a great addition to The Bonsai Zone I'll have to find 1 for my Bonsai room
Thanks, my first one!!
It looks so pretty Nigel! Nice work as always!

Great sharing...Nigel 😍👍👍
Many thanks!!
Excellent pruning on your Fukien Tea. I know you will be rewarded this spring and summer with nice growth.
Yes, I'm looking forward to developing the tree!
Wow, this is master piece made by a master, thank you for sharing, I am working my Fukean Tea Tree also now.
i have said it once and i will say it again, you have such a great artistic eye.
Thanks James!!!!
I have a feeling you got this at tropical expressions lol great tree! Also love that you added music to the 360 view!
Looks great Nigel! I have a similar funkien tea tree that I am going to work on today after watching this inspiring video. Thank you
Awesome Raymond!
very much reminds me of a boxwood. Pretty neat species Nigel!
Yes, I hope all goes well with the tree, I read they can be fussy!
I like this tree, first time Ive seen one and nice initial styling. Please try that larger cutting
Yeah, I would also be mad if that happened... 😂

I want to own one, just for the name!😄 I love the angular look of it. Looks like something out of a Commodore 64 game!
A Minecraft style tree for sure!!
Fantastic initial styling. I enjoyed your branch selection process. Plus all those cuttings to root (if you go for it)
Nice work Nigel, the tree looks good. I think they're a really neat tree and the wood is surprisingly hard.
I was thinking of buying a boxwood, but now i want a fukien! 😅
Nice cuts!
Hair. Wow.
Thanks I learnt alot
This is handy since I just picked up one of these from Tropical Expressions a week or so ago! lol
Добрый вечер 🤝🤝👍
Доброй ночи, спасибо за просмотр!!!
My Fukien is a favorite. Likes strong light and steady moist soil. I keep it indoors.
Thanks Sue, I hope it does well!!!

They can drop their old leaves, best solution I think is check the soil and don't panic
What a sweet little tree! Can you make tea from the cuttings of the fukien tea? I wonder how it would taste

Hey Nigel, was wondering how your delonix regia is doing, hopefully you can do a video on that soon.
It is still dormant, but hopefully alive!!!

Nice Michael, good to know!
Nice.. mine is in an awkward grow out phase. I know you did your research but just in case I wanted to mention they are are high iron feeders.
Thanks, good to know!!!
Hi Nigel, the Carmona takes a very long time to form roots (easily up to 6 months). So don't despair if nothing happens for a long time.
Wouldn't rooting gel/powder help with this?
@@jasonbrooks4996 Of course you can try that.
@@selfmade6142 Sounds like a plan :)
Looking good👍👍🇵🇷
Thanks Carlos!
Can we have an update over this 😊
Hey Nigel, do you have an update coming for this one?
Unfortunately it looks like it's died. I will try another!!! I took too much off the roots.
@@TheBonsaiZone it happens 🤷🏼♂️ better luck with the new one then!
Nice one you found there! I have been reluctant to purchase one as it is sub tropical and hard to keep healthy indoors during winter.
How are that tree doing today? I have problems getting fukiens to survive.
did any of the cuttings take root?

Awesome Gerardo, I hope it does well!!
Give the cuttings a try in rooting. Even though it is not the right time of the year, you might just get a cutting to root.
Thanks Tom, I'll give it a whirl!
I don't have a way to keep my fukien cold in winter. It is inside. What can I do? Just started bonsai 3 months ago. Thank you

In Bonsai, Is less often more?
Sometimes, the tree just went through a subtraction procedure, now it's time to grow some additions!
How small are these leaves in comparison to regular carmona retusa leaves?
They are about half the size!
Did you make tea with the leaves you cut off? 😍
I didn't, I think you can, but I'm not sure with this exact species?
I'm surprised this is fairly new for you, I see these guys at hardware stores all the time as bonsai. Had one once but it got aphids and scale and I couldn't save it 😕
Yes, they are very common, but usually very expensive what you get!!
Hey Nigel, great video as always :) Have you noticed the pleasent smell while cutting the tree ? I also have one of these and really like the fresh citrusy smell. Maybe its stronger on young branches
I didn't notice a smell, I'll have to check on the cuttings! Thanks!
It would be cool if you kept the top branches and cut the lower branches off
Give the cuttings a try. Use some vermiculite and a warm spot.
Thanks Tom, I'll try!!!
Good luck with this tree Nigel, they don't like being moved around alot. I've killed at least 3 of them. And they shed soo many leafs
Thanks, I hear they are quite fussy, like my cat!
very difficult tree, especially at repotting
Yes, I'll have to be very careful, I hear they are easy to kill!
💜💜
i had one a year or two ago. drought killed it somehow.
I think they are quite fragile as bonsai!!
I've never managed to keep one of these alive past its first repot.
I hope I can, that will be coming up in early summer!
Hi Nigel! "My Fukien Tea" Is a little too close to another trio of words near and dear to my vocabulary.😁
I think this is a common theme with this tree, seems they are never quite happy, a bit of a drama queen bonsai!

I jad a fukien tea. It died. After that i only grew native species that could handle the weather where i live.
Yes, they are fragile trees at best!
👍🍎
Thanks!!

@@TheBonsaiZone ,, Only took me four years. I guess bonsai HAS taught me patience ;-)
I managed to kill my fukien tea, while I had covid. Luckily, costco just got some inventory, in case I would like to try again.
They seem to be a very fragile tree, lots of comments about people having no luck with them!
