    Good to hear someone say Roger instead of QSL. I really wish hams would consult a few manual on procedures.

    So here is a question, that Icom tuner supports tuning a random length wire itself (there is a adapter included with the AH-705 to attach a wire right to the coax plug) so it would be interesting to compare the performance of the Packtenna 9:1 compared to the AH-705 with a wire attached that is exactly the same length as the one attached to the Packtenna. Assuming the AH-705 can tune that wire (which from what I hear it should) if you end up with equivalent or better performance, it would make for a simpler setup. I have an AH-705 myself and a Packtenna EFHW, but not the 9:1 like yours. I plan on trying the tuner with a 71ft wire to see what kind of performance I might get compared to the EFHW without the tuner, and with it.

      The only initial thought I have there is that the PackTenna random wire is 29 feet long and has a 9:1 unun to bring down the impedance to near the 50 ohms the radio needs. A random wire without the unun may be too great a mismatch for the tuner to compensate. A resonant wire of a half wavelength would work easier but I don’t feel like a non-resonant random wire would be close enough to be matched with the tuner. Ham-Solo K0FYR

      The AH-705 is specifically designed to work with random wires directly attached to the tuner (only needs 9:1, which the tuner can handle), though not with an EFHW which would need an unun (the tuner can't compensate for the 49:1).
