Uhm, on most 5-speeds, reverse is bottom right, but this is a 6, and different auto manufacturers put reverse on a 6 speed in different places.

It's implying that many people today never learned to drive cars with manual transmission. Especially in the US

They had only driven American based cars, which traditionally have the reverse gear on the right side.

1977 mustang it has a four, same pattern , ups package vans have your same pattern, 18 wheeler freight liners have that same pattern but also have a toggle to go to 12 gears

You push for example vw made cars the gear shift lever and go to “firs gear” which is reverse or I had BMW where you “double push” to the left and then go up to go to reverse so it depends who makes the gearbox
