Neither of these crashes are the end of gaming. Just like how all the major extinction events throughout Earth's history were never the end of all life. Its merely the old companies that have become too fat, greedy, and complacent failing to adapt to a changing environment. But they aren't the entire industry.
In the 80s, the only gaming markets that crashed were the console and arcade markets. PC gaming actually thrived during that time, especially in Europe. Because unlike consoles and arcades, it was being fueled by individuals that had passion for their work, instead of just corporations producing a product. People that made games for fun first, and money later. So even if no one bought their games, they still made them anyway. They learned, and grew, and made better games, until people did want to buy them. And it was many of those people that started the companies we now know as the "AAA" titans that dominate the industry.
Of course, very few of those people still work at those "AAA" companies, so the company attitudes have completely changed. And even though that is now killing those "AAA" companies, it still won't be the end of gaming overall. Its just the ancient dinosaurs dying off, because the environment is changing, and they're too big and slow to adapt fast enough. Meanwhile, the new little indie rodents that have been scurrying around their feet, trying not to get crushed, now have an opportunity to take over as the new dominant force. Even though many of them unfortunately follow the same self-destructive practices as the "AAA" dinosaurs, there are also plenty more that still deliver what their players truly want: Fun games.
So don't think of this as a complete extinction, merely a culling of the herd. And its up to us, the customers, to guide that culling in the right direction. If we push things the right way, we can help make the gaming industry healthy again. And all we really need to do is vote with our wallets. Support the developers that make games you like, and ignore the ones that don't. Never forget that the customer holds the power, not the company. They need you, but you don't need them.
And then we need to learn from the past, and listen for when it starts to rhyme again, so we can stop it before it gets this bad next time.

Something that all the right wing adult children celebrating Concord's failure still fail to understand is that the investors are going to walk away from that debacle with more money than they started with. Same goes for any large scale crash they create. The kind of investors that hold the power to cause this kind of damage to an industry are career capitalists, meaning they've been doing this long enough to know how to pump up the speculative value of an investment target, and then pull out early so the crash and all the losses are effectively absorbed by others.
This means that the source of the problem will live on, and potentially go on to ruin other industries, or even return to recapture whatever is left of gaming. Regardless of this, gaming may collapse back into a niche hobby for an extended period, with far less to choose from, and much lower quality. Gaming is a uniquely difficult hobby to get into, it's sweaty and difficult, compared to movies or music which require little personal investment from participants. This means it can be very difficult to rebuild a consumer base after a crash. People might just move on and never come back.
And if someone *does* manage to rebuild gaming after a crash, and new companies and paradigms rise up and eventually reboot the industry, it will likely come at great cost to consumers and developers... As it did the last time with Nintendo, who exploited the previous video game crash to deploy numerous authoritarian and anti-competitive practices with minimal resistance. Something that managed to be a problem far outside of the US market, where the crash was mostly localized.
The problem is that people wont address the core problem here, which is the out of control investors and business. "Free market" capitalism needs to stop. Unless something is done about it, unless we start limiting the growth and power of business and investors, it's very possible that things could get much worse before they get better, assuming they ever do get better.

Make videogames good again, for a while.
The cycle repeats after innovation happens as the market rewards innovation: investors switch their capital towards what the market rewards, and the studios begin to make concessions in order to appeal to investors. The new Warhammer game already had an injection of capital that will have to be accounted for: the injection came after the success of the game, which means now they have to come up with something new to appeal to investors, not consumers.
There's no way to break this cycle, but at least you can be certain that it's ciclical.
I'm a solo dev. I've developed innovations to 3 genres that are dying or plain dead; I've spent 7 years on this already. I'm currently producing the first new genre. But there is a branch of gaming industry, where regurgitating well known ideas, with small additions, meant to harness increments in processing power is the recipe for success. This are simulators.
i.e. I've bought both Assetto Corsa (2014) and Assetto Corsa Competizione (2019), I also fully intend to buy the next installment despite it bringing nothing revolutionary, just some incremental enhancements.
Same with LiftOff, I've played LiftOff, but I've gladly paid for LiftOff: Microdrones, as it brought simulation of tiny whoops a little closer to real life drone I fly whenever weather and time permits.

You are right. Even when you look back at the period before the crash, many games were developing from other ideas and making it successful.
I would argue that even incremental changes can still be innovative, particularly with a formula that works. It’s when games market themselves as “innovative”, yet do very little to actually change the game.
These sound like interesting games. I’ve heard of the first two, but not LiftOff. I’ll have to have a look!
