The thing that confuses me is that I know the man in the video is himself, but in the song he very clearly sounds like he’s talking to his dad and even mentions parents. So is the general song about his dad but also decided to mix in the fact that he felt like he let himself or will let himself down?
The lyrics itself, brings a tone of a relationship between son and father, it may even sound like this, but in fact it is the Nate (NF) of the future seeing him from the past. It is him saying to himself from the past that he is sorry for having disappointed himself, for not seeking help for himself, for not having fought against his own problems and such, so he just sees him passing by suffering without doing anything , because he brings this perspective of his future to see him from the past going through so much. At the end of the video there is a tattoo on the "real" man who is the tattoo in real life that the NF has, and the woman calls him Nathan, it is the name of the NF. Not to mention that he has already done an interview and he himself confirmed to be a perspective of him from the future watching him from the past drowning without doing anything.
