That potting mix is soooo important just remember that. You'll want to get some peat. Somthing like black Kow compost and a potting soil of your choice. Mix it 1:1:1 and get some perlite and mix it up. Heck just look up video of making your own potting mix.

my only issue with this is the amount of (non-food-grade) plastic you'll have up against your roots, with the intense sun and temp changes breaking down into micro-plastics for toxic trace-element uptake..

This is a great help for those in wheelchairs who can't get into the garden. My husband loves his "garden" on our driveway . Last year was tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, onions, and strawberries. Maybe this will decrease our water bill this year. Wal-Mart also carries these timers.

Hi Daniel and Arms Family. My wife and I have a farm in the Philippines and everyone there has Moringa (Malungay in Philippines) trees. The leaves are used in soups and also fed to pigs. It is nutrient and protein rich. I put Moringa powder in my bullet proof coffee as well as juices and smoothies. Super good for you. You will probably have to transplant it as they are a tree and will outgrow the bucket fairly quickly. God Bless. ~Mike and Ester~

For people asking why in a tub & not in the ground, I can answer one of reasons is that the area that gets the most sun on my property is the driveway. We've had vegetable plants growing in regular pots on our driveway for years. We have a lot of big trees on the property that shade the property at different times of day. With the driveway, there are no trees and no shade, so we've always put big pots of vegetables on the driveway.

Hi, Dan. When we lived in Turkey, we lived in an apartment ( four kids, my husband and I) and all we had was a balcony. I was able to use pots to grow, tomatoes and peppers. I used broken Terra Cotta pot pieces in the bottom of the pots to let air flow and to keep the soil from compacting. It worked pretty well but I think this system would have even been better. Thanks for sharing it.

My dogfood comes in a fabric nearly the same as the landscape fabric and I save the bags and use them. They work great for this and all kinds of gardening uses. Of course my dog uses a large bag of food being a St. Bernard, but ask your neighbors, they may have bags they don't want, and they are useful, even for cutting up and sewing into produce bags!

I grew a lot of veggies in sub-irrigating solid plastic buckets similar to these that you show here. Had some good years with them and some not-so-good years. In a solid plastic bucket in full sun, the soil temperatures can get quite high, and even with air space in the bottom, the plants can get quite root-bound.
I ended up switching to porous grow bags in sub-irrigating tubs with great success. The plants really thrive when the soil gets more air and is able to sink off much of the heat from the sun.
I was glad to see this video, and I encourage further development with variations in sub-irrigating containers. These will allow people to grow food ANYWHERE there is full sun, such as apartment balconies, apartment/office building rooftops, etc.

These were first used for pot 😂 known as a “hempy bucket” I used expanded clay and gravel in the bottom up to the level of the drain hole. Then whatever soil medium/fertilizer to the top.
You don’t really need the coffee can. You should see explosive growth once the tap root reaches down into the reservoir area

I know it adds to the cost of the buckets, but I put a cap on my fill tube. I only had to water once a week until it got really hot, because the plant's transpiration rate wasn't enough to empty the water reservoir in 2 or 3 days. For the first couple of waterings, I used small clay pots with lids as ollas. I watered deep like you do, but the ollas kept the top soil from drying out. I love your video.

I feel so much better when I take moringa, it's pretty incredible. Sure is spendy, though. I got some seeds and I really want to plant them, but I'm not sure what to do in the winter. I have an old livestock trailer that doesn't have any cover on top and the wood is pretty much gone. I could throw some poly over it and call that a green house?
I'm near Tahlequah, and I'd like to see how yours grow not far away.
Automatic irrigation is the MAIN secret to success growing here in Oklahoma. It used to take me an hour a day to water my garden when the heat kicked up starting in June. With my irrigation kit, it takes me exactly none minutes a day.

    • @carolynchadwick7867
      @carolynchadwick7867 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Natureboy Bryon - you need a piece of filtering material, like landscape fabric, etc. inside the pot to cover the drain hole & keep it open. btw, Did you line the container with the fabric?
Also, put at least one other drain hole at the right level.
Daniel has another self-watering video using the fabric.

I've had to move them up under a tree to shield them some and move them back when theres some sun. It's a real pain. They are growing great though

You can buy 55 gallon plastic barrels (hdpe) and cut them in half. Works great, they last for many years and hold 25+ gallons of dirt. Its like a small garden and you can get them for $8 - 10 each. Very cheap.

  • @Azeldas_Legacy
    @Azeldas_Legacy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

First, someone may have already suggested this, as a truck driver I will voice to text but I don't get a lot of chance to read all the good comments! Anyway if someone is having trouble cutting the whole in a plastic container that is tight enough to keep dirt from falling into their water well a good feed of kitchen quality caulking or even hot glue around your PVC pipe and against your plastic would just give enough barrier to keep the dirt from falling in.
I am loving this idea of the self-wicking pots, I have a lot of plants at home which of course means someone else is doing my watering part of the time. With two different people watering it's easy to have over watering or underwatering going on. Looks to me like if I start transitioning the most sensitive of my plants into self-wicking containers, maybe we can avoid that problem.
Second, I had a question on what Leon said about feeding your plants. Commented to the effect of they want fed everyday that you eat. Which makes sense on the one hand but I'm assuming that he's not adding fertilizer everyday I'm assuming he means what he's using is time release, or that you want to make sure the nutrients/fertilizer in the soil aren't depleted at any given time, so to stay on top of your timing on that? Thanks for all the good info you're sharing!

Or, any old plant pot paired with an oversized saucer you keep full of water. Or fill with water daily or every other day and let osmosis do the work.
Yes you still get an algae build-up but in my design the algae remains on the outside, in the saucer and away from the soil.

Point a drill at your palm to push an oversized drill bit thru an unsupported plastic coffee container. What could go wrong? Next video: How to put a chain saw on a stick as a DIY weed wacker to clear land. :D Drills work great on a supported surface, in reverse for brittle plastics less pliable than a Homer bucket so it doesn't snap big pieces off. But so does a soldering iron, which is faster, no raw edges.

I have nealy beach sand for a yard. I wonder if I buried A half of a 55 gal plastic drum in the ground, and made a wicking system to hold water close to the bottom of my plants. Would that work. I have tried amending the soil. In the summer. I can water every day. And it is bone dry before I can get back to watering the sametime the next day.. The water just wicks away into the surrounding sand.

The “rain gutter self watering system” by Larry Hall could cut your labor by 35% -50% , here’s the general description: 5 gal. plastic bucket with air prune holes drilled in sides (1 1/2”- 2”l (air pruning makes phenomenal growth with little root binding), 3” net cup hole in bottom, 3” net cup, line inside with heavy duty landscape cloth , use your own dirt mix, get plastic rain gutters from Lowe’s, fasten 2x4’s to long sides of gutter, sit planted buckets on 2x4’s over rain gutter. At one end mount a float (Larry sells the whole kit). Guttering comes 10’ L but you can fasten them together for the length you want with a sleeve for square ends of gutters. 30-50’ long runs are better because of the need for a float for keeping the water level constant in the guttering. You can daisy chain the guttering runs together with switch backs but precise canting & strategic water dams are needed to hold the water at proper level & flow. The other problem that’s surfaced is the plague of mosquito hatching in the gutters, the fix I use is heavy landscape cloth folded under at edges & stapled to the top of the 2x4’s, then cut an “x” where you want the pots to sit allowing the 3” net pot to rest below it. This does a good job of precluding mosquitoes & larvae entering & hatching. After initial set up, there is no daily water hauling or worries abt missing their daily drink, The easiest set up is straight run, side by side with a PVC header to supply each run, the float system is abt $10-12 each. Questions? Go to TH-cam @ RainGutter System by Larry Hall, he has several candid vids abt his “RainGutter Self Watering product . Good Luck, Shalom! PS : you can use garden mesh bags sold on eBay ( cheap) instead of drilling the air prune holes in a 5 gal bucket, Walmart shopping bags are polyester & make perfect air pruners. I’ve switched to mesh bags & dc’ed the buckets bc when done with the bag, they can be cleaned & folded for storage, buckets take way to much space to store ( imagine storing 500 buckets, even nesting them is prohibitive over 5).

Did you ever do a follow up on these(the buckets not the tubs)?
My local feed store sells the tubs for $5. If I had the soil mix I’d buy a couple. Not to mention we may move next year.
I built 3 of these and may do another. I just drove around and picked up buckets off the side of the road. Nothing like FR99.
Maybe I’ll post a video of my buckets and track their progress.

Do you have a video that shows how to build the irrigation system and how to connect the hose to it for the timed waterings? 🤔

how about filling the bottom of the bucket with some big rough stuff, pine bark, wood chips. sure it will eventually decompose but thats good stuff too. Are you gonna keep the same soil in the bucket year after year, top it off with new and refertilize.
Love your catch, clean, and cook vids. I used to do a lot of fishin with my dad all saltwater tho. Is there a limit to how many paddle fish you can keep each year? Looks like Houston can wipe out an entire fillet by himself. I didn't see what Dutch did to cook the Morels.

I built a self wicking, true air pruning tube. Drilled 2” holes around tube with bottom of holes all about 4” above bottom of tube. 3 rows of holes to the top. Lined tub with landscape fabric and filled with potting mix. No cans or bottles needed in bottom.
Watered from top until water came out all around at bottom of bottom holes.
End result is water reservoir at bottom and air from sides for true root pruning.
Squash doing fine for now, will see how it grows.

Great video on the wicking bucket! So, dumb question here. You water the plant by pouring water into the PVC pipe, correct? If so, doesn't that remove the air pocket created by the coffee container? Thanks.

Drilling holes like that is super dangerous. Freaked me out! I would never point a drill towards my hand or arm, etc. Just saying...

I grew in these 5 gallon wicking buckets last year and it worked great! I am curious if anyone has advice on how to prep the soil again for a new growing season. Do I need to dump it all out and change out the soil or add amendments? Or can I dress the top with some good compost/manure and replant? I kept them mulched pretty deep and under cover through the winter and watered them every once in a while so the soil didn’t get hydrophobic.
