You can do the same thing with two identical 5 gallon buckets. One sits inside the other. The outer one is the reservoir, the inner one is the planting bucket. Place the overflow hole in the reservoir bucket right below the bottom of the inner bucket. Install a hole in the center of the bottom of the inner bucket to hold the wicking cup and additional 1/8” - 1/4” holes to allow extra water to drip through to the reservoir and flow our the overflow. The overflow also provides that needed air space between the water and the growing medium so roots don’t stay in a “wet feet” situation. The overflow also allows you to monitor when you have fully filled the reservoir. You can paint the buckets to extend their use as plastic becomes brittle over time in the sun.

I tried 5 gallon buckets before, but they didn't hold enough water.

    • @406Steven
      @406Steven 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@rickmorenojr You could take your current design and add another pipe coming in from the side with a float valve, then run the pipe to a manifold fed off of a main reservoir (as long as you don't need to move your buckets). This way you add water and nutrients to a central reservoir and each bucket will self-water as needed, all you need to do is top off the reservoir periodically.

@@rickmorenojr So you complain about the 2 5 gallon buckets system-What about somebody criticize your system to your tubs. It is expensive and parts that you don't need. You probably are hurt by their remarks. People use that system for a reason. They may have no yard or live in an apartment--the only way to grow a garden. I know people who use this system for years and they love it. I use it for 2yrs and I have no complaints. So I will make a deal--DON'T CRITICIZE MY SYSTEM and I WILL NOT CRITICIZE YOUR SYSTEM.

My goodness, you made this really complicated. You don't need half of the materials/labor you used. You don't need the sock, you don't need the drainage PVC, and you don't even need the extra holes or notches on the 4 inch PVC. Trust me... water will find its way in and out of all parts of your setup without all the extra help. You can cut your expenses in half.

I tried MANY different combinations of planters. Some work ok and others not so much.
One of the better ones was a cheap laundry basket planter. Costs less than $5 to make, including the oil drain pan (new) from walmart.
Got the benefit of air pruning and subirrigation both.
Unfortunately those still do not hold enough soil for a tomato plant to thrive like I want them to.
But bush greens exploded with growth and production.
Tried grow bags, 80L ones, limited or no results.
Tried potato grow bags, same problem.
Tried 5 gal customized ones and those did OK.
Tried different kinds of bagged potting mixes - little to no benefit.
This year I cooked last years potting soils to ensure no pathogens, bugs, or weed seeds.
Too early to tell right now.
Tried IV drip bags for drip irrigation - waste of money.
BEST watering solution I found was those 5 gal refillable plastic water jugs for water cooler dispenser (not the flimsy cheap on the shelf ones at Walmart either).
Used a build coring bit, drilled a hole in the ground, filled the bottle, inverted it and placed into the hole.
Water lasted a week. About 3-4 days when the weather is roasting hot outside.
Tried long neck wine bottles in the same setup for different plants. Those generally worked OK.
Tried water crystals with little benefit.
I made two new subirrigated planters - 20 gal each but with the tubing in the bottom, they only hold about 15 gal. Using those for tomato plants.
Cost me about $40 each to make too.
Doesn't count the Happy Frog and Black Kow manure I put in them. Everything for those is all new.
Now if the dang weather would stop getting cold....

I liked your idea to support the perforate divider with the center support. I am using cut drain tile standing vertically. I cover both ends of the drain tile with garden cloth and fasten the garden cloth with zip ties. I use plant bases for my dividers. I drill holes in the plant bases to allow water flow. I use two plastic plant containers as my wicking cup. I drill holes in both containers to allow water flow to the wicking cups. The first cup supports the divider. The second cup holds the wicking soil. I too use garden cloth to separate the soil from the water. I am continuing to look for grommets for the overflow hole.

I put a bit of silicon around the connector to make sure it is water tight and a bit of fly screen over the connector on the outside to stop bugs living in it tie it off with a zip tie and a bit of weed mat tied off on the inside to stop soil washing out - not as neat as these ones but OK

Usually plants like tomatoes really depend on those micronutrients as well. I plan to use it but will use fine screen aluminum mesh (normally used for bug screens or eave vents) for the filters, it lasts forever, never rust. I will also add an overflow hole in the side immediately under the false bottom for two reasons: 1) indicate water level by outflow when filling and 2) let out excess water that might accumulate above the false bottom during heavy rain (important to prevent root rot).

Nice video, but you over spent on material especially the plumbing material. Other videos are right on the money.

Best tutorial in self watering pots!! I might make it a little less complicated but this is clearly the ideal pot 👨‍🌾💪

I think if I were going to do this, the only difference would be stuffing the sock with perlite instead of soil. My soil this year was always wet, and I think that's why my tomatoes got fungal diseases so early. I don't know if the perlite would necessarily help, but it might.

Man, you're a lifesaver. I like to grow over the summer, but we like to take off too. I was looking for a way for plants to stay watered for more than a few days. Thanks for the tutorial. Im making these tomorrow.
