❓ Did You Know There's A Correct Stitch Length For Quilting?

- If you’re quilting, that means you are asking your machine to stitch through three or more layers. That, in turn, means that you need to increase your stitch length. But what stitch length do you need for your machine quilting with your walking foot?
In this video I’ll tell you exactly what stitch length to choose and why, so you’ll feel very confident with all your quilting projects.

I have just started quilting my first quilt 😬And it's quite nerve-racking as well as being tedious! I have had it on 3 so this is very interesting. I think I can get away with increasing it on the rest of it as I am just outlining rectangles. Have just found your instructive videos and really appreciate how clear you are 😊👍
So glad I can help Helena (or is it Helen?). The trick to quilting is to take it slow and steady and treat it as an exercise in mindfulness/meditation. Don’t try and do it all in one go either. It’s better to enjoy the process in smaller hops than find it tedious. As you learn and develop your quilting skills, you may want to consider free motion quilting as that’s faaaaarrrrrrrr quicker. Or, if budget, allows, look for a local long arm quilter who’ll do the quilting for you. The only right answer is the one that’s right for you….we need to find where *your* joy is. Thank you so much I’m new to quilting and I was making a placemat and did diagonal lines with batting and did it on stitch length 2, no wonder it looks tight 😡, so I do my piecing on 2 then with batting on 3.5 is this right please. I love your videos they are easy to understand thank you
Hello! Yes, you are exactly right 🎉🥰 2 mm for piecing and 3.5 mm for quilting. You could experiment with a stitch length of 3 or 4 for quilting too to see what different effects you get, but 3.5 is generally fine all the time. So glad you like my videos, thank you 🙏 Kim xx

Thanks I'll try it out. I had it on 3, Singer Heavy Duty & half way through the block ( stitch in the ditch) I can feel like the feed dogs aren't pulling right & the stitches go tiny & weird. I've re-thread several times & it works for maybe half the 10" block. I know it must be something I'm doing wrong.
Hmm, that can happen if your stitch length is to short, so try lengthening again to 3.5 and see how that works. It is always going to depend on how thick your fabric is and your wadding is, and the combination of them. The thicker your quilt sandwich is, the higher your stitch length needs to be (within reason). Then it depends on what your machine thinks it's doing. So always do a practice piece first to see how your machine and thread work with your intended fabric and wadding. Let me know how you get on. Kim x
@@QuiltWithKim I may have had it at 2 but after your helpful video I changed stitch length to 4, redid the walking foot twice LOL & it's now sewing blocks nicely.
I'm using standard quilting fabric & I think the batting is the wool type.

What ever happened to the 8, 10, 12 stitch length? I learned to sew with those numbers. I don't understand the 2.5 or 4 numbers. Good thing I still have my old sewing machines with the old numbers.
Hi, the 8, 10, 12 etc are the imperial equivalent and refer to the number of stitches per inch. Modern machines are now to millimetres, which is what the 2.5, 3.5, 4 etc refers to.
10 stitches per inch is equivalent to 2.5mm (ie a standard stitch length).
6 stitches per inch is equivalent to a 4 mm stitch length (great for tacking).
8 stitches per inch is equivalent to 3mm, so you need 6 - 8 for quilting.
14 stitches per inch is equivalent to about 2 mm (so perfect for piecing).

Hi Felicity, I've got a couple of videos coming up on tension (starting this week) so they should help you; however, essentially you will have a default tension level on your machine so you need to find that first, then sometimes I find you have to tighten it a bit (ie increase the number) for quilting. It very much depends on your machine though: one machine I had needed a slight adjustment, the other didn't. So I would see how you go on your normal setting first, then experiment a little on a test quilt sandwich. Hope that helps :-) x
