  • How Will the New FL5 Civic Type R Improve on the FK8 Civic Type R?
    The new Civic Type R has just been revealed by Honda. It is supposed to be even faster than the FK8, but what makes the 10th gen Civic Type R so great? Short answer is Honda engineering. Brian breaks it down by pulling the engine on this FK8 when the car was still new in 2017! We put it up on the lift at Hasport and look around the car. Then we pull the engine out. All in the interest of education.
    Look for a more in-depth video looking at the engine in a future episode.
    Sorry about the audio. I did just buy a new mic for future videos.

      hasport/brian has been modifying honda for ages.. and i am sure he prefers to talk technical than dumb it down for the masses. Why not make this channel techy, there are enough dumb ass car vlogs by 18 year olds and mainsteam buzzfeed typical car channels to stimulate the rest of the population... also, if something is said that is too techy for you, then google it and learn something - you seem to have enough time if you are willing to reply to my half assed comments.

      There was talk in the beginning of the type R being awd but eventually got scrapped for lap times from my understanding. So when the idea got scrapped they could've already had the design made and left it.
      However some people in here make great points like Honda thinking ahead, same platform as the crv, and different markets.

      Check your Honda dealer. If I remember correctly there was a slight issue with the linkage bracket causing an obstruction and sometimes causing the shifter not fully going into gear. Ask your dealer to see if there are any known service bulletins. I know Honda Canada has them.

    • @mikew2482
      @mikew2482 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was either that or the clutch lines and the slave cylinder causing the issue. Like I said, it's been a while when i read that bulletin. But Honda should have it.

    • @slimjim8736

    • @NCRranger24
      @NCRranger24 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheRedc0met yeah, a widespread issue that iirc honda was issuing a recall for is just bad driver skills. Like how my 9th gen sometimes grinds into second with the clutch pedal pressed in all the way, even sometimes when my honda master mechanic of over 10 years who's been messing with Hondas since the 90s has an issue with it too

    I think what I love behind the criticism is the fact the engineers have built this car to cater for the hardcore Civic tuners. Of course they have dumbed down the spec but left room for people to easily modify it to their tastes!
    Right now you dont have to spend mega bucks to gain another 100+ horse power!

      I sure hope so. I know that Honda has officially stated the reason they stuck with the FWD platform was they wanted to continue the tradition of being the beast FWD of the old Type R. I hope that they decide AWD is the way to go though, very large opportunity for them. And well for me too :)

    • @This0is0pointless
      @This0is0pointless 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want them to make it awd.... But I also would like for them to take the next gen acura ilx on this platform and drop this engine in along with shawd and bring back the type s. It could potentially compete with the s3 since it will essentially be around 40k either way which the s3 starts at.

    My guess on the space for AWD parts is due to the fact that the Civic and CR-V share platforms (with the CR-V obviously having AWD). I’m thinking they used the same floor pan and a similar rear suspension in both cars. So maybe get your hands on a CR-V drivetrain and see if it fits?

    The new Type R looks like a Mattel collaboration gone horribly wrong.
    To your point Mr. Harris, I bought a brand new FA5 generation Civic Si with the first bit of money I ever made. I loved it to death because it had the same high-revving K20 motor that was in the EP3 Civic Type-R that EVO raved about when I was in high school. Sadly we never got the EP3 in the states, so when the FG2/FA5 arrived I had to have it.
    Drove the living daylights out of that FA5 and at 2800+ lbs fitted with stiffer springs, and sway bars it was a ton of fun on any backroad, or highway ramp. Lift-off oversteer was common as was scary levels of brake fade on any road where there was enough room to spend multiple corners above 5500 RPM. The new Type R doesn't match that buzzy, hyper-caffinated feeling of the old cars, and its way too expensive (albeit a better, fast car) for the people who'd go apeshit for it. For the money buy a Focus RS and throw the entire Mountune catalog at it, or buy a clean 996, 997, or e46 M3 and have a real driver's car. Honda does need the encouragement, so good work (?).

    According to some testers and owners, this type r has an overheating problem when driving enthusiastically. I can see why. They are using the same coolant to cool down every part of the powertrain, manual gearbox included. Like if having a water cooled headifold was not enough to overheat the coolant system... Overcomplicated powertrain design. And the water cooled oil in the gearbox still can't prevent the 2nd gear grind. I think the cooling system can't cope with the powertrain temps in sporty driving. Also the front of the car doesn't have enough air flow to the cooling system. Not enough air inlets. To help more the aerodynamics.

  • @Jeffball610
    @Jeffball610 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The two motors don't look so different to me. It's a bit of an exaggeration with both manifolds on and an AC compressor vs the K20's stripped down look. The valve cover "cover" also adds some visual weight.
    I hate when people say "I can't wait for someone to make ___ for this car". Why wait for someone else? We (companies) can't be experts in everything, but diversifying is never a bad thing. I'm sure Hasport has some CNC and 3D imaging equipment that could easily handle making small things like brake ducts. Obviously they'd need to invest in 3D printing, composite construction, or other methods to make the ducts themselves, but that's a small investment that could lead to more product development and future products to drive your company forward.

    I have red color one. There is 0% torque steer. Only time i realize its a FWD hatch is when youtubers remind me of it. Otherwise this is so well built vehicle, so unbelievable how well they built this thing. To get a clear idea about it just drive it for 2mins.

    I hope Honda watches this video and read the comments to get some input.
    let's see what's in this Type R. Uh the brakes need pipes going to them. It needs AWD, rips out the engine, the calipers are too big, it needs more camber, the intercooler is too small, Damn man Honda really Fuc*** up this car. These guys should be put in charge of the Type R subdivision. I'm pretty sure you can buy that as a crate engine but for racing only.

      Not according to Honda. Although one of the engineers admitted to me it didn't work for what it was designed for but it was too late in the process to change it.
