Kudos on the anti-sieze. Thank you! Every time plugs are installed they require a very light coating of a/s on the threads which most people - even a great percentage of mechanics do not do and this just invites so much trouble.
YEEEEAH BUDDY!!! DONE! And not one plug broken! Thanks for posting this video bro. Without it, and Jason Tarnutzer's helpful Ford Explorer video, I probably wouldn't have had the courage to try this. Mechanic quoted$400 for the job. Less than $150 to get it done myself! Can't wait to go tear it up and see if this fixed my 2006 Mustang GT 4.6 3valve misfiring probelm. See you on the road!
Thanks for giving me the confidence to change the plugs in my '07 Saleen Heritage Edition with 41K miles myself. #4 took some coaxing but they all came out without problems. PB Blaster is amazing! I had to give the plugs a shot just to break them free initially. My mechanic wanted $375 to do this for me and I know I did a good job for just over $100. Took me just over 2 hours not including the 2 hour PB Blaster soak. Permatex has an aluminum graphite anti-seize just for this purpose now. $4 tube
@californiaspinnaker Not sure but I don't think yours has the 2 piece spark plug setup which is why they would break. Just make sure to put anti-seize on the new spark plugs when reinstalling.
Hahah! Just came back upstairs to my apt. to find your response, I was cracking the spark plugs and spraying in the initial shot of PB a minute ago. I'm currently in "the waiting stage". Thanks for the reply. I'll keep ya posted on how it goes.
Great Video. I have an 03 Altima with 160k. I haven't replace the spark plugs nor do I know if they ever been replaced, so I am trying to change them myself. I have a magnetic spark plug socket but the spark plug is really hard to break and im afraid of snapping it. Do I spray it with Pb blaster b4 or do i force a 1/8 break then spray? Thanks
I was wondering if you can give some advise...I have a 4.6 in a 03 explorer..140k I don't know if the plugs ever been changed. I can do my own work.. plugs can be tricky like you know. I purchased the PB Blaster...I'm wondering how much is enough to spay on each plug. Also if this gets down on the piston...will this do any harm. should I turn over the motor some to blow the blaster out before I put in the new plugs...any of the questions answered would be great .thanks..Bill Newfoundland/Canada
@californiaspinnaker I had a 98 Exploder XLT for my daily about 5 or so years ago. The rear is tight. I used 2 univerals and 3 extensions on a 3/8 from underneath. Figuritvely by me 250 is 2.5 hours to do a plug change at the dealer. Removing the inner fender does help alot though. Its if you want to try the cheat or not. Sometimes the correct way works faster and sometimes it doesnt. Its just the way the game goes vehicle to vehicle and mechanic to mechanic.
Warm the motor for about 20 mins doesnt have to be normal operating temp. The spray will help get them unstuck so they dont stick when removing. It is probably best to replace them if they are the factory ones. How many miles on the car
The coils do not need to go back where they were, they're all the same. The socket size is 9/16", not 15mm. The PB Blaster and/or the carb cleaner is a waste of time in my experience. I also suggest using compressed air (after the coils are removed) to clean the dirt from around the coil area so it doesn't end up in the cylinder. You are correct about the high-temp antisieze, but you do not need to put it on the threads. I suggest Motorcraft plugs as replacements. Lisle extractor tool is best
Warm it to normal engine operating tempature? I don't have any of that sparay and I'm a bit on the broke side, so is that spray absolutely necessary? I just want to remove the plugs to check on them and see if I can salvage them by brushing the carbon off as I saw in a Motorz video.
Thats awesome! Thanks a lot, quick question? where do you get the one peice replacements, do you have the Part # or please tell me where you bought them? Please I really want them, thanks in advance for your help
i found your video very useful bro, thanks a lot, i have a 2006 Gt and i want to change the sparkplugs, how do you know whent it's time to change them??
I paid the dealer $362 yesterday to change my plugs ('06 Mustang GT). I'm wondering if he charged me, but forgot to do the work. The plug holes still have a lot of dirt surrounding them and the coil packs show no sign that anybody touched them. I don't think they would do this intentionally, but the lack of evidence has me concerned. Do you think it is possible to change these plugs and leave zero evidence that you did the work?
This is completely unrelated to the engine but my 06 V6 Mustang is right headlight won't turn on the high beam turns on but the actual headlight itself won't turn on, I've already gotten the fuses checked and their all fine any idea?
I have an '06 4.6L and don't know if I have ever changed them before (I have owned it since early 2008.) Think if I took it by the autoparts store, they might be able to show me what I need to do since I'm still lost after this video and now I'm worried about it breaking off.
my dear i use mustang gt 2006 , i tried to extracted spark plugs some thing happened i got out halfe and the another half still inside , so kindly advice me what should i do in this case ,
Just spray a good amount but not to much. Hard to explain. When you put new ones in the motor will burn off the pb blaster that is in the cylinders. Wont cause any harm just some minor smoke for about 10 mins.
TSB 08-7-6 says " CAUTION DO NOT REMOVE PLUGS WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM OR HOT. THE ENGINE MUST BE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE WHEN PERFORMING SPARK PLUG SERVICE. REMOVING THE SPARK PLUGS FROM A WARM/HOT ENGINE INCREASES THE CHANCE THE THREADS COULD BE DAMAGD " So not sure you want to warm up your engine before you start this procedure.
47k miles, I'm not sure if they are factory ones or not, but I don't think they have been changed since I owned the car (March 2008) and the car had 15k miles on it then.
well i did it was tough broke 3 of them bought the lisile tool worth every bit of the $70.00. Next time i will change them at 50,000 not 140,000, thanks for the video.
I am sure I have done this on many motors and burned it off. Just a little smoke. Just dont use to much pb blaster. Dont see how it would get pasted the piston rings.
Thanks for the vid man. Gonna give it a try this weekend. A different video mentioned needing to do an oil change to remove excess PB that will leak into the pistons, but in a comment below you mentioned that just letting the motor burn it off won't cause any problems. Can you confirm? Really don't want to do the oil change as I literally did it last week. However, if it needs to be done, it is what it is. Lmk. Thanks bud
@californiaspinnaker If you have a 4.0 OHV engine you dont have to worry. Just get ready to have fun on the back passenger plugs by the AC box. get a bunch of U joints and extensions ready :)
We use a 3/8 impact and lightly shock them, at the dealer if they break they break. Every tech has a tool anyways. If you have time between flat rate jobs we throw some PB blaster or carb cleaner down thier if its a "next day" project. We see them all come out good and some where every one you need the tool. If your gonna DIY get the tool. One breaks and it will ruin your whole day cause you wont have the tool, and you dont want to drive the truck like that.
Then its time to change them. Make sure you buy one piece spark plugs to change out your old ones so you never have to worry about them breaking again. Also ensure the motor is warm when you turn each spark plug slightly to spray PB blaster in the holes. Then let sit for a while.
dude i got a 08 GT i had the car for three years got it with 77k now i got 114k Miles on it my question is will spark plugs fix my car from holding back she still go,s good but I remember how much harder she would pull from a dead stop my car will choke a little but it dont do that every time just some times i know i need a tuneup my question is will it fix this problem? btw loved the vid helps me out alot
Coil packs and spark plugs will help a ton man, check your throttle body intake for the buildup of carbon on the butterfly flaps. Get a toothbrush and some carb and choke cleaner and clean that all off.
If you use an electric impact to remove the plugs, they come out EVERY Time without breaking. I have even removed plugs like that on a 04 3V truck with 140k miles and original plugs.
one last caution from the TSB 08-7-6 says CAUTION: EXCESSIVE MOTORCRAFT CARBURATOR TUNE-UP CLEANER, OR REPEATING THE PROCESS SEVERAL TIMES WITH TOO MUCH CLEANER FLUID, COULD INTRODUCE ENOUGH LIQUID VOLUME TO HYDRO-LOCK THE ENGINE.
@@UWISHPROD, Yes, first time . Once I learned about the spark plug problem, my car had 100k miles on it. I was using it ALOT. i figured well, lets see how long she goes. 265k. NO problems. All coil packs are new of course. 0 breakdowns.
how do you recreate the vacuum on the plug boot? I have yet to get it to occur. I have had 7 plugs get fried ever since I replaced the first set at 65k. initially I wanted to blame the plugs, but now I think its the boots and COP. currently have 74k
first I would look in manual for spark plug intervals. If they say 100,000 I would change them at 50,000. Plugs are cheap and you make them easier to change
Use the one piece Champion plugs which are $25.00 a piece,Most Ford techs highly recomend these. The factory plugs are 9/16,not 15mm.The TSB does not work worth a shit, plugs still break off.Don't use the Ford tool to remove the broken part of the spark plug, does not work.Get the Lisle kit,Part #65600
@AJGoSkate1 Ya burn it to the ground....no just kidding lol The spark plugs on that shouldnt be 2 piece but you can still use the same routine I did here
Don't use anti seize. Unless you use the super cheap copper plugs don't use it. The anti seize will act as a lubricant and will make the plugs torque down tighter then they should. All modern mid to high end spark plugs already have an anti seize coating on the threads.
Kudos on the anti-sieze. Thank you! Every time plugs are installed they require a very light coating of a/s on the threads which most people - even a great percentage of mechanics do not do and this just invites so much trouble.
Thanks for this video. My 07GT has just under 44K, and I have been dreading changing plugs.

Thanks for making this. Sitting on 50K on my 08 GT and getting ready to tackle my plugs this month....
1/8 turn clockwise to break it loose? Thanks for the video!
Note for others. I recommend using the Sea Foam Deep Creap.

Thanks for the video . one out of dozen's that actually get the finer detail's on this job. the plugs are a pain in the ass.

What gap did you use on spark plugs and are they Motorcraft platinum plugs? Thanks 👍
.053
I cant believe you did not clean up around the spark plug hole, A blast of air before the plug comes out helps a lot.
They are Champion 7989. If you google that should be the first post on amazon will give you an example of them.

Runs like a champ just figured it was time
@ihopetospeed1 The problem was the design of the spark plug Ford used. The spark plug breaks in 2 pieces.
Warm the motor for about 20 mins doesnt have to be normal operating temp. The spray will help get them unstuck so they dont stick when removing. It is probably best to replace them if they are the factory ones. How many miles on the car

@majajh Ya about an 1/8 turn you can feel it when it loosens.
Its funy I came across this. I just made almost the same video but 7 out of 8 snaped off. I should have the video of the remval up by tomarrow
Thanks. Put a lot of thought into making this video

What brand spark plugs did u replace them with.
Right on. Need anything else let me know.
thank you i got an 2005 mustang gt 4.6 with 11,942 miles on it but i want to change them at 50,000 just afraid of breaking them
Might be the bulb or wiring to the light.
what spark plugs did you buy?
How about a 1998 Mustang??? got any advice?

Does this apply to a 2002 Mustang GT too?
where did you get that tool at
It's this for a 2006 mustang gt tho ?
would the regular antseize work as well?
DOES THIS APPLY TO DOES THIS APPLY TO A 2006 GT MUSTANG?
peace of mind when you have the remover on hand when they break
Do you know the torque for installing new spark plugs?
+John Park I use the German method; Goodntight. But for real, it's 25lb-ft
They are Champion 7989.
Warm the motor a little before you start this but no worries using what I said in the video.
I have a 5.0ho ok how much hp 5.0ho have . please don't know don't answer this question....
i have 265,000 miles on my 2006 Mustang GT. Im just starting to have sparkplug problems. Im about to do the job. i have the puller tool already.
Hope that’s not the first time the were changed. And make sure new spark plugs are one piece.

Pretty impressive though. Just take your time and they shouldn’t break but at least you have extractor kit. I broke one and had to find one local

ya it should

It looks pretty easy to change spark plugs Im gonna do it myself instead of paying a mechanic a 100 bucks for a job you can do yourself
@UWISHPROD No problem. Its a crappy design. The combustion carbon locks them in there good.
x-ray lima 2, sounds like somebody served or government affiliated :)
@UWISHPROD Thanks man really helped out!:)
Awesome. Now go do some burn outs lol
@kien425 Champion one piece

i guess they're the stock ones.....the car has about 78,000 miles.
