Good morning. I’ve watched every TH-cam video this morning from growing potatoes to what crops you need to survive an apocalypse. And to my delight this came up. So if nothing else, I’ll be art journaling while watching my crops grow.

The lightning bolt finally hit me. Thank you!!!!! I've spent too much time thinking, thinking, thinking and achieving nothing. I've also spent too much time buying stuff, thinking it would miraculously make me artistic. The talent is not there yet, but the enthusiasm is. I'm heading off to my little craft room to experiment.

Paper punches would work to make a stencil as well.

  • @mavisdavisify

The idea that this is just paper and if I don’t like it I can throw the paper away has relieved so much pressure it’s made me much more daring in what I try. I also refuse to even try to create a masterpiece. I just do not have enough experience with the products or the substrates yet. I want this to be fun and not create anxiety. Thanks for all the encouragement.

Thank you, Mike! It's hard to accept the practice element...but you're right...nobody here but me and the cats. They love everything I do, so no worries.

Tip number 5: if you don’t like it, paint over, collage over or rip it up for use in something else. Or wait, it may just grow on you later down the road. I’m looking back over some of my old card making that didn’t quite look right then, but now is taking on new life. And art journaling is playing a whole role and is so much fun. In fact, I have a whole new world of art thanks to you and many others from watching TH-cam. As they say, “just do it.”

Well done! Well said! Thanks Mike! You definitely clarified the simplicity of how easy it is to start and get going. This was even a good reminder for those of us already creating.

I keep old bottle and jar lids for printing paint or ink circles. Also if you happen to be cooking, chop the root end off celery and use it to stamp flower shapes with paint or ink. Orange peels can be pressed into a spackle for texture. I like light weight spackle instead of texture paste because of the price. Also drywall tape makes a nice grid texture. I save scraps of house paint and wallpaper to craft with cereal boxes, cookie boxes... Coffee and tea make nice stains, but purple ink can be made by gathering poke berries in plastic bags in autumn (stained finger alert) make stains from onion skins, spinach water, the sky is the limit

Great beginner advice. I know I have been watching videos for just over a year and at first absolutely nothing made sense. But slowly, I have tried new products and techniques that have appealed to me. It's fun and relaxing and, since I am handicapped, it gives me something to look forward to every day. Thanks Mike.

Excellent advice, Mike! I especially like the idea of copying. Looking through art books for inspiration and ideas. These could be borrowed from your local public library. And if you don’t have a library card, if you live out of the district or something, just go to the closest one and sit at a table and look. Another inspiration, perhaps the most important is to look at nature or children or your pets or even TV. Inspiration is everywhere. Cameras on phones today give us lots of opportunities for that, as all of us well know.

  • @andreajohnsMyPotteryBliss

I agree with all your points. I’ve been helped, a lot, by copying what others have done. So often I find myself stuck without an inkling of what to do. One day I thought, “ You are making this much harder than it needs to be. What to make has already been figured out countless times by others. Use the references that already exist.” Every single time I have copied someone else’s work I learned something valuable and usually ended up taking the same piece in a completely different direction. I do not plan to sell anything. My art journals are only for me so there is no cheating or plagiarism. I see the collages, journals, paintings I copy as reference materials and inspiration.

Thanks from a different place in time (7/6/'18). Your tips were encouraging. I've already gone through what my sister and I used to call "the gathering phase". I've got all the supplies I'll need for a long time (I swear I have one of everything) and I just received my Tim H. black glass mat. My problem was in getting started. I've taught classes in fiber art and needle felting and have painted many acrylic paintings in the primitive, Grandma Moses style but this journaling business is a horse of a different color. Knowing what to put where and when to stop. Your words were encouraging. Thank you.
