DIY Art Journal Tutorial For Beginners - Step By Step Process

  • Here is (finally) the tutorial showing how I created the art journal as seen being used on my channel.
It is an altered book which means it is made from an existing book, in this case- the cover was used.
I hope this was helpful to those of you that have been asking about it, but if not please feel free to ask questions, I hope you'll give it a go!
I know many of you may be put off by the binding, but If you are still struggling with it I have a seperate video tutorial here that may help you fill in the gaps, I promise once you try it it will start to make sense:
    • Easy Binding Tutorial ...
    SUPPLIES:
    - Old hardcover book
    - Paper of your choice (I used paper from an art pad)
    - Scissors
    - PVA glue + brush
    - Paper trimmer OR ruler
    - Thick paper or fabric
    - Bone folder (not necessary)
    - Paint, pencil, stencil, texture paste - all optional
    BINDING SUPPLIES:
    - Needle (choose a large/thicker one with a wide eye)
    - Awl
    - Thread, cord, string or twine (I use waxed linen)
    - Paperclips or bobby pins or bull dog clips etc
    - Ruler and pen/pencil

I am not sure why people give your video a thumbs down. I have watched a few hundred of these and find yours are among the best. You are organized, have your materials and words ready, and don’t belabor the descriptions. There are many slow-going video where people show their entire thought process, their pets and their newly done manicures. I prefer yours. I don’t have hours in a day to watch. When searching for ideas and inspiration 15-20 min. is a good amount of time for me to accomplish that. Thank you for taking the time to post your process.

Isn't it funny how some people view the book as destroyed, when actually mixed media artists give them a new purpose. If it is just the cover used this time, the pages get used another. I get my books to alter from charity shops. It is recycling at its best,
    Great tuturials, thank you

@@bearded-cat Cardboard is already made of recycled materials and is designed to decompose quickly. A hard cover book is made out of archival grade quality materials, which means it is made not to decompose. Using an old book that may never be read again will last years and years while a cardboard book will fall apart in a short period of time.

I enjoyed this tutorial! I'm a book conservator, so I do a lot of binding and repair old books - but I'm not horrified by this, just impressed by your ingenuity!
A tip for everyone: you can use the back of a spoon as a 'bone-folder' for making nice crisp folds in your sections.
And please, please be careful when selecting books to recycle. It's often the case that charity shops/thrift stores won't know the value of some books. I would say don't use anything older than the 1970s, just in case. Reader's Digests are PERFECT for this kind of recycling, though, because they are cheaply produced and abridged versions of stories. You'll soon find out that modern hard-covers like the one in the video aren't sewn together, but rather the pages are stuck to a strip of glue on the back like paper backs. Ironically, this is called 'perfect binding'.
Anyway, thank you, this is a great introduction to bookbinding!

Gosh at the comments about 'destroying a book', sure it's destroying them, but it's turning a book that probably would've been chucked out into something new and beautiful! I cringed the first time I watched someone destroy a book to re-use, but it's an excellent way at recycling and turning something old and unloved into something new, beautiful and loved! Loved the video, thank you! Because of you and your videos, I now have my own gardening/art journal I ADORE, I used a book I was never fond of and even used some of the original pages :)

i cringed too... but now i think of the billions of unwanted books out there. of the billions of old books that nobody has time to read.. or won''t read because they have been reprinted in a more "desirable" cover or format... or their content isn't relevant anymore, which is even worse... plus, the pages/content can still be read if the pages are carefully removed.

Well its been about 6 months since I first came across your tutorial. After several tries I finally succeeded in completing my FIRST art journal and it turned out Fantastic, even if I do say so myself!! I used a steam punk theme and yes I recycled an old book. I learned by watching your tut and actually created a few techniques on my own which I am sure is the goal of a tutorial?? So I am off to do several more hoping to create one for each of my kids, my five grandkids, and now my two great-grandchildren. They all knew their grandfather and miss him as he has passed away. I will create a journal of his life. I want them all to know what a great and inspiring man he was. Thanks again Johanna.

This is such a fantastic tutorial thanks for this! I love that you included a manual way to do this too as some of us don't have the tools to cut through paper like that so it really helps to see that it can still work despite have that fancy tool! :D

Found two hardback books to reuse today in a charity shop (thrift shop?) for only 50 pence each! I will probably use the pages to paper mache some of the cover and add texture before painting (making as much use of the old books as possible). Thank you for your inspiring videos, can't wait to get started on my first art journal!

I love using the old Readers Digest abridged book covers. They are a really good size for a journal. The covers are already pretty, and you don't have to do as much to them. I also don't feel bad taking the book apart. There are several abridged novels in them, something I would probably not read in the first place, because I like to read the complete book. I also reuse some of the pages and illustrations. I am looking at this video for about the third time to refresh my knowledge. It is a wonderful tutorial! Thanks again, Johanna!

Hi Johanna. I was very lucky to find you (dont ask me how!) I love your beautiful voice and you make things look very easy. I have gone through nearly every one of your videos now and I find you truly inspiring. I love how you show your mistakes on your other videos and how you have fixed or hidden them - or just left them. You aren't particular and are happy with the imperfections of your beautiful organic journals. Well done! You have found a new follower :)
