      Thanks!
      A ridiculous cozy area to work on.
      If Toyota could've sacrificed a cubic foot or two of interior space, and given the engine some elbow room, the xB would be the perfect ride for an aging, casual wrencher, like me.

    If you look real close on the alternator, there is a "grooved notch" where you can position tip of long screwdriver tip, prybar, whatever, to apply the force to tighten for the bolt trick (I used a nut and bolt that just fit inside the existing threaded hole). That way the tool tip won't go into the cooling fins where alt inside wiring, parts are while prying. You have to loosen that bottom pivot bolt as well...mine was on so tight, the bolt snapped, so only my top bolt bolt keeps my alt in place and tightened with no issues. I don't disconnect my battery as to not reset the codes and have computer go through the learning drive cycle, but that's me. Scion xb 2004, 226k, still going strong.

  • @boothpotter6772
    @boothpotter6772 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    he missed a step here - you need to loosen the bolt on the bottom of the alternator so it can pivot once the tensioner bolt is loose. it's a 14 mm head and kinda hard to reach.

    • @patrickdavis9566
      @patrickdavis9566 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      no. no he didn't. it's actually a pivot bolt. This isn't a Ford. it's a toyota. Seriously don't mess with that bolt unless you are replacing the alt. but he is wrong. A good pry bar can put enough tension on belt. But it's safer to follow this guys recommend process. see to do it the way I do it risky might break part of alt.

    Thanks Mondo, I put a bolt in the threaded hole just like you said and started to put pressure with my crowbar and the bolt bent (probably cheap metal) but I was still able to move the alternator and tighten the belt at least a quarter inch. There is no more squeaking when I turn the AC on or anything. Thank you.

    Excellent video bud. Nice to see someone that actually knows how to make a video and edit it the time wasting nonsense out of it. I hope others learn from this video. LoL
    FYI, all of that crap (belt conditioner, soap, baby powder, wd40, oil, etc.) is bad for the belts. It may help temporarily, but any type of fluid can cause slippage and all of it will shorten the useful life of belts. You solved the problem the proper way by tightening the alternator pully and that was that was necessary, and should be done. Once you start putting stuff on the belt your risking other problems, plus that sh!t gets all over the engine compartment and you dont want it on anything else......hell, you don't even want it on the belt. LoL

    You know I found another way and you dont need a bolt and prying bar all you need is I believe is a 14mm wrench. On the alternator body frame itself theres a square looking shape with a hole in the middle of it well that's where you can use the open end of the wrench for leverage you just slide that 14mm open end on their and pull towards you or down towards you and well tightening down the alternator adjustment bolt. I did this and it works just as good.

    OMG Thank You I own a 2005 Toyota Scion XA & it's been squealing for Two Very Very Long Years & No one has been able to make it stop, Not my man, Not my neighbor, Not the 3 mechanic that I've taken it to, all the cans of belt sprays that I've used on it. I am so crossing my fingers in the hopes that this will work.
    Thanks

      You might want to get a new belt. When they wear down, they begin to slip and squeal.

    • @dabeast1246
      @dabeast1246 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Debra DKT i think its a manufacturing defect. there should be a recall on this problem. i own an xb and have some buddies that owns it too and were all having the same problem. i alreasy changex my belt n tighten it pretty good and its still squealing. i know it can get annoyung n frustrating, especially during the winter here, my car always squeal with the fan and defroster on and will not go away unless i turn the defroster off or itll stop squealing once my car gets warmer.

    This really works. I bought the bolt that screws on and used a long tire iron to move the alternator. I had to adjust it three times but the third time I did it, I saw the alternator actually move forward a lot. It is fixed. The mechanic could not even resolve the belt noise when he changed the belt. This is a very useful video.

    • @randomatic6034
      @randomatic6034 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you remember what size the bolt was?

    • @cameltrophy37

    • @cameltrophy37
      @cameltrophy37 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had to adjust and tighten the belt again today. Other people might say to loosen the bottom alternator bolt also so it can freely move. The bolt is a 14mm. It is hard to get to but I got to it by using an open end wrench. The bolt is under the alternator. So far so good. No more belt noise.

    fantastic helpful vid! One thing to check is to see if that bolt fits snug, I think the fitting might be metric because a standard bolt felt a little snug, luckily I had the right size in my spare parts bucket. The other is to make sure you don't put pressure on the vvti sensor. My squeak is gone!

    I know you're forgetting the 14mm bolt just below the 12mm on the ALT. Lossen the 14mm this will give you a better swing on the ALT. to eliminate the lose belt. You in the video haven't even moved the belt. I know this because I've worked on these things.

    • @MandoDallas
      @MandoDallas  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct besides the fact that you state I haven't tightened the belt. Obviously I have. I eliminated the noise and moved the tensioner 1/16 of an inch, which all it needed to solve the issue. ✌🏽

  • @7red7

    How did you manage to move the alternator at all if you didn't loosen the pivot bolt under the pulley? If you've never had your belts replaced, they are torqued down so hard from the factory that some people need a breaker bar to get it loose. I see you mentioned that you just ended up replacing the belt. How long was it until the chirping and squeaking returned? I'm having the same issue and noise in my 04 xB right now, and I can't get the alternator to move at all without that lower pivot bolt being loosened too.

    Best to replace the belts with new ones if there old in stead of just trying to spray belt dressing or retighten old belts if they break on you your going to over heat the engine and you be up shit creak if you blow the head gasket

  • @LAVAROCK100

    never just try to tighten olds belts ..change them out because the old belt is stretched out already it will break on you and your car will overheat ,,,,,just buy new belts

    You still have a noisy ass idler pulley, or other accessory drive pulley.

      It was actually the alternator belt on top of being loose as hell. I replaced the belt after making this video, it was dried out and in poor shape from slipping for the last couple months. So I used a little sand paper to unglaze the pulleys and now she purrs like a kitten.
