  • Just a quick discussion about the Pros and Cons of tuning. The Pros outweigh the Cons. We also estimate horsepower and talk about future modifications. When discussing horsepower we’re talking Rear Wheel not Crank.
From the dealer the Ram 1500 is rated at 395HP. This is crank power not wheel power. You lose close to 20% through the drivetrain before it gets to the wheels maybe more do to limiters that hinder the vehicle’s performance. We will discuss this more in a later video but the only way to truly get the power you pay for is through tuning and performance modifications.

Nice video, but definitely a bad time for a tuner. Gas is going to go even higher yet when summer blend becomes available, because it’s more expensive to make. But like you said, if you can afford it, no harm no foul. Tuner is the only thing I won’t be doing to the truck. 108 is fast enough for me. Still haven’t put the Mopar exhaust on yet. I made a decision to do it, but right now isn’t the time. Had to spend double the price on an invisible fence to keep our Aussie from getting put her harness and leaving the yard to visit neighbors dogs. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s always something. Still thanks for the video and info on the tuner.

Yes gas is crazy right now especially if your running any type of performance tune cause you have to run that higher octane. Now You also have the option to run a economy tune for better fuel economy at a lower octane like 87 or 89 so the tuner is a great tool all around. It really depends on what your looking for. I plan in the future on doing another MPG review on the performance tune. Will be curious to see if I’m actually gaining or losing with it. A lot also has to do with how much you put your foot into it lol. With the performance tune it’s very easy to get up and go cause the truck wants to go go go. I also had Sean leave the MDS system active to try and still conserve gas on the freeway. Now the exhaust, I love the way this truck sounds and after I put longtube headers it’s going to sound even more aggressive. Definitely one of my favorite modifications. The Ram Air is also a great modification now that the truck is tuned for it. There is a huge difference in power.

@@MOPARRAM-bd9zk I look forward to hearing about the MPG gains or loses either way. Would definitely love to hear the truck after the new headers are on !

@@jimlove3795 I try to document everything so you’ll definitely hear it as soon as there installed. Once again video does no justice to the sound of this exhaust. Hearing it in person is so much better. I think it’s like that for mostly every thing lol

Ouch! Yeah $5.30 is crazy for 91 octane.

Where would I look for a transmission tune at

You mean your still not at full 400 hp like the hemis are rated for?

Yes the Hemi is rated for 395HP at the crank but you lose a lot of this power as it travels through your drivetrain to the wheels. Stock the truck puts down 254 to the rear wheels on a dyno pull at 1.1 (6th gear)do to the speed limiter. If you have the person doing the dyno pull from a lower gear like 4th you will see more like 300 to the rear wheels. Your suppose to do a pull at a 1.1 so the 300 really isn’t accurate but if the limiter wasn’t there that would be a more accurate number from a pull at 1.1 (6th gear)
Now unlocking the PCM and adding modifications with a good tune I’ve seen these trucks get 350-370 rear wheel depending on modifications. The dealership has these trucks tuned way down. I hope all this helps you.
I do plan on putting the truck on a dyno in the near future before adding long tube headers to see where it sits. I’m going to take a estimated guess and say it’s around 335-350 rear wheel HP. According to Matt at Moes Performance with my Modifications and tune I should be around those numbers and after installing Headers along with a hemifever header tune it should be right at 370 closer to the crank power. Now anytime you increase wheel power it also increases crank power so for example if I’m 370 to the wheels then the crank HP is now in the higher 450-500HP range. Hope all this makes sense.
Here is a link of a bone stock 2019 Ram Rebel getting Dyno and it only made 254 to the rear wheels do to the limiter.
