    I live about 20 minutes away from Old 55. Today I went there and had a delightful experience. Super friendly staff and informative. I bought the BIB and fell in love with it as their first whiskey for me to try. I have only had three other bottles of whiskey, Monkey Shoulder, Tullamore Dew and Bulleit Rye. This is tied with Tullamore Dew. Also, the alcohol burn is very minor compared to the others, being new this is going to be a frequent bottle in my house. I am breaking my one bottle rule with this one.

    Both Old 55 whiskeys are wheated bourbons, and both use sweet corn instead of standard yellow corn. Old 55 is farm to glass, everything is grown on their farm, and the Fruits family that owns it is good people. I have both these bottles and did an AB over the summer, with very similar takeaways. Cheers!

      @CaseyShoaf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, there is no sweet corn in the mash bill for these bottles. They do make a separate 100% sweet corn bourbon. I just did a tasting and tour at the distillery a couple weeks ago.

    The Rexual energy in this episode is fantastic.
    Really awesome seeing back-to-backs of different expressions - the comparisons are killer. Reminds me a bit of the frequent cameos/comparisons from earlier episodes. Cheers, my dudes.

    Super excited Black Draft made it!!! I got to taste some of the rye that, I think, they are releasing soon. My first Rye but I loved it! Happy to see my local whiskey here!

    I've had 4 bottles of the Old 55 single barrel. Drank 3, gifted 1. I wish I'd kept it.
    I was a Maker's Mark man for over 20 years. One day last year my father in law gave me a small shot of Old 55 he got from one of his friends that owns one of the liquor stores in town. The store wasn't allowed to sell it, but the store owner did cash deals for it. He had half a case and once I tasted it, I wound up buying 4 bottles. It's the best whiskey I have ever had in my life and I want more so bad. I live in Indiana, but it's a 6 hour round trip to New Town.

    I own both of those Old 55 bottles. My single barrel barrel strength was a little below 55% but still all of those same tasting notes. I am happy to see them getting love on here.

    I have a bottle of Old 55's 100% Sweet Corn bourbon but haven't tried the others. It's pretty good, sweet & corny as one might expect. I also have a bottle of the SoFL Lee Sinclair 4 grain. I get what Daniel & Rex are saying about it but I like it a bit more than they do. I can't day that I get much of a pine note, maybe I'm perceiving it as something else.

    Hey I just started my journey into whiskey a few weeks ago. This channel and the whiskey tribe channel have been really entertaining and helpful tools as I try to find my way, but I don't see much content on lowland scotch. I was wondering if Daneil and Rex have covered this region and where those videos are? If not, would love to see a video talking about some lowland whiskeys!

    Hey fellas is bottled in bond called such because of the proof?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a throwback term originating from the "Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897" which was implemented to hinder tampering, adulteration, and scams in the whiskey industry at that time. The government basically acted as a guarantor of authentic whiskey and provided a tax incentive for the distillers involved. To be qualified as BIB, "whiskey must be the product of one distilling season from one distillery (no blends), aged in a federally bonded warehouse for at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof."

      @@AndrewDembouski Bottled in bond applies to US whiskeys only. It means 100 proof and comes from one distillery in one distillery season. This was to ensure quality and authenticity.
      Cask strength is simply a whiskey that has not been diluted during cask maturation. You can get various proofs from that but in range of 52-66 ABV. So cask strength is usually stronger than bottled in bond and not as tightly regulated.

    I just don't get this new note you guys keep bringing up? tannen, Tannen, Tannen? What does biff Tannen taste like? Hints of horse Dukey?!!

    • @AndrewDembouski
      @AndrewDembouski 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tannins are complex chemical substances derived from phenolic acids (sometimes called tannic acid). They are classified as phenolic compounds, which are found in many species of plants, from all climates and all parts of the globe. They are large molecules that bind readily with proteins, cellulose, starches, and minerals. These resulting substances are insoluble and resistant to decomposition. Tannins occur in many species of coniferous trees as well as a number of flowering plant families. These tannins can leach out of the plants. The water in the soil becomes rich with tannins and seeps into the ground water or drains into lakes and streams. These waters become brown in color and look like tea.

I hear people say it all the time out here in agreeance in Arizona now too. Perhaps it's a regional thing? Or a personal thing? But no judgement is held.
