Dirt Track Days

  • As a kid I lived by Leo's Speedway in Oshkosh, WI. Every Tuesday night there was dirt track racing. Dave Conger and Roger Regeth are a couple of the names I remember best. The fairgrounds used to have horse races and had a giant old wooden grandstand. They played rock-n-roll 45's on the P.A. before the races while the water-truck sprayed down the track; then the flagman put on a scratchy rendition of the national anthem and the lead car did a lap carrying the stars and stripes. Good memories of being there with my Dad. We moved and then the races ended and the grandstand got torn down. Photos are from the track - unfortunately I couldn't find any good ones of the grandstand. Words and music by me.

Never been to Wi., but these pictures could have been taken in NC! Great times indeed! Back when everyone built their own piece from the ground up, and every car was unique! Brought back memories of Stick Elliot, Carl Smart, Haywood Plyler, Bennie Davis and a bunch more that tore up the Carolina clay “back in the day”! Thanks! You made my day!

Man ol man can't tell you how much I loved those late models and sportsmen cars from the past for the most part they were home built and every car had a identity of its own not like the chassis builders of today and all parts are off the shelf thanks for sharing your archives and greatly appreciated it

as a family we went often...Conger was dominant and would have to start from the back to win. Great memories.

I miss the days when all race cars were built from real cars. Not like these cookie cutter bodies (that don't look like anything) stretched I've cookie cutter chassis's with motors built from parts that have never been in a real car. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the technology of the new cars and they are faster. Good night, today's street stockers are more advanced than the old late models.

This parallels my life, except in N.E. OH. But my track is still here and a BIG part of my life. It's where I met my wife of 40 years. LOL, and my kids. We took our newborn oldest when she was like a month old. Great vid!

I believe these to be my grandpa's days. Gary ute raced late models orange 04 with thumper the rabbit on it. Any chance anyone saw him races or heard of him? I've never met him or seen a photo but I've heard of the car and all the races on fridays, saturdays, and sundays
