My grandpa loved dirt racing, he told me when he was younger he loved racing so much that if he was going to die it would be with a steering wheel through his chest and a smile on his face from ear to ear!
"Holy Cow! He's dead!" A lot of guys met their Maker on many of these film footage scenes. Noticed in the early sections of this footage, future Indy 500 Champ winner of the 1960 Indy race - Jim Rathmann.
The tree is part of a street course which once was just about all of them. Many of today's big permanent tracks started out that way. The 1930s & '40s coupes rolling and going over embankments is from when NASCAR raced on the beach at Daytona many years before the speedway was built.
Drifting on tarmac is very, very different from drifting on loose dirt. Drifting on dirt is actually faster, see rally and midget racing for example. Drifting around tarmac is much slower, you will never win a proper road race that way, and drifting as we know it now is done more as competitive performance art, not racing.
At 8:37 that dude gets barbecued, I can't believe nobody stopped to try to help him get out of the car. "Got to get that #1 position!". Also nothing like some jazz funk to listen to while watching extreme old school carnage
Back at that time the “savvy “ car builder put as much fuel capacity into their machines as possible to go as long as possible without a pit stop! Barbecue’s like this are what, eventually, made them decide to limit tank size! Savage way to go!
He wasn't barbecued. Just before the car hit the wall, Duke Nalon (the driver) jumped out of the car. There were no seat belts so he could do that. He was mildly burned if I remember correctly
At 7:41 it’s the SPEED RACER intro crash we all grew up with. All that was missing was the epic explosion. Much respect for these brave men. I have a 28 model “A” idk if I’d have the balls to race it. Ex motorcycle racer myself.
Drivers back then weren't corporate spokesmen like today. They didn't say much. And they risked their lives for one helluva lot less money than drivers do today. His only real money came after he retired and became a successful Chevy dealer.
Rathman in that shot took my interests immediately. He looked like he didn't want to be in the car, all grouchy looking. But whereas all the other cars looked used and abused, his looked like it came right off a dealersahip's floor. That car had some clean lines.
Love the old tricks, like pull in front of someone, off throttle then floor it to get wheel spin, kick up a massive dust cloud, get an advantage. Eat dust wasn’t only being way back in the pack.
Wow the term "Eat my dust" really meant something in the day eh? The "Thickstun special" has absolutely no suspension at all LOL. Crazy times and crazy men! The filming is so clear and it's like it was taken in 1080p or something. I like seeing the people of that time just as they were in the shots around the cars. Their girl nearby their mechanic and friends family etc. So cool! Then Gand Prix start at 7:00 in. Not he same quality but a lot of mayhem! LOL.
The overall event was won by the car and crew featured at 1:47 owing to their ability to coordinate cigarette consumption while plotting race strategy.
Seat belts without a roll bar might = upside down and grinding your head off to the chest. They preferred to chance getting flung clear like a rag doll.
I'm not very wise on the subject but I noticed the smart design detail in the early open tops. First off not having roofs was dumb. I don't care if it made you a wuss or somthing. But if you're not gonna have a roof then having the lack of full sides is very smart. I notice in every roll over the driver is ejected with probably injury but if it was enclosed with the top then the driver would be trapped inside as it rolls over while having a very small window of escape if any
Certainly a good argument for crash bars and a 5-point safety belt. However at the time, they all thought the best solution was to be thrown clear of the accident. I don't think I would think that if I was racing at the time.
@@tedcruzforgayrights2045 The first seven minutes may have some restoration, and a very high quality scan of a very pristine print. After minute 7, quality just drops to low grade scan and film showing it's age.

As I would say, when real men drove real racing car and won by the hair on their chest.

I’m especially fond of the video showing the crash with the tree growing on the track.

they say drifting was invented in 1970s and it was hard, meanwhile average racers in 1940s

Nice to see some had crude roll cages, didn't even get them on production cars till late 2000's

It is nice to see the cars of that time had a triangle protection for the driver.
Thanks for this video!
This is from an old race track in Norco - corner of Corydon and River - in the background you see the old Naval Hospital/former Norconian.

At 2:12 Jim Rathman won the Indy 500 in 1960. Roadster racing with Model A Fords is where racers got their start in the late 1940s, after WW2.

I believe the word 'safety' hadn't even been invented yet
Not wearing any face muzzles let alone disinfecting the steering wheel to guard against 'king's headdress 40'
No, they died like real men lol
Amazing how far we’ve come with aerodynamics on a car now
Did they ever consider roll bars? or was that too pansy?
I think to heavy for the car and they just get in the way.... LOL
you're funny. they weren't even buckled up lol
Back then racers preferred to not even have seat belts because it was preferable to get thrown out rather than roll over strapped in.
i saw a roll bar on 102

Bit short on roll bars and seat belts there
What's the music at 2:20
Great video...
They didn't even have seat belts.
Considered sissy to even talk about that there safety.
During those days, the idea was that, if you crash, it's better to get thrown out than have your head crushed when your car goes upside down.

Car 102 has a "Roll bar"!
Most of these cars don’t even have any kind of roll bars. Helmets aren’t strapped on. Safety is obviously an afterthought
