The reins (and subsequently bridle) are used for tasks like performing different skills. You won't see any dressage riders (or anybody else for that matter) who know their shit use the bridle for turns.
That’s why I would die if I decided to ride without a bridle. I remember as a beginner that's how I fell off of other trainers' horses because they were not disciplined enough to know something simple that they shouldn't do. Bits always rubbed me the wrong way. Especially as they are essentially completely unnecessary. They just put the horse in discomfort (even if you don't pull too hard or anything).
Riding is about core control and balance. The reins help you communicate with the horse. I'm not surprised they could stay on considering their level of riding, I'm surprised they were able to actually complete the course without giving the horse direction. Incredibly cool. That's trust and skill

@donnievance1942 While I do agree with you (I always train leg pressure), horses trained off of leg pressure is mostly a Western practice. There are quite a few English riders who do train it as well. Your hands and reins should be communicating to the front end of the horse. Your legs and weight should be used to communicate to the back end of the horse. However, jumping is mostly rein control because of the sharp turns and body positions needed to make these kinds of jumps.
I LOST IT at that SHRUG!! "whatcha gonna do eh??" Absolutely insane - the rider had, like, two seconds? Four strides or so? To get some kind of a plan together and execute it and it shook out flawlessly. Damn Good pair, this!
This, my children, is the perfect example of that you should always ride your horse and hold onto it with your body and legs, not grasping for your life/balance/performance onto your reins. Great job!

Many comments about how well the girls did here and I agree but I don’t think it would be fair if I didn’t just say what a brilliant performance by this horse. He knows what he is doing!
And maybe let's add some riding skills?😂 all these things are of course very important for the bond and the performance overall but without her skills and experience she wouldn't have survived a thing like that, not to mention competing in GP. Also trust is not going to correct how your equipment is laying on the horse so sometimes you need to layer everything to actually help the horse to perform better. Which I'm sure you know 😊

The horse knocked one of the poles because of this. The rider lets the horse know to slow down so they don’t knock the pole down. But yes it probably felt pretty fun for the horse

Reminds me of my cousin's horse she had when we were all little. That horse would run barrels without a rider if you set her up and smacked her butt. So at 7 years old I sat on her and held on for dear life. Best ride ever.
I feel so lucky I have a horse like that. When his hackamore broke one time, he flinched a bit and backed up, then he was fine like nothing happened. He was just surprised lol!
This is one of the many reasons why i practice mounted archery as a jumper. We cant have our reins whilst shooting so me and my horse can get used to having that connection and doing things even without a bridle. It is so cool to see people eiding like this and the balace and trust here is insane!

There's a great video of an AQHA mare,Ms.Dreamy,whose bridle fell apart during a reining competition.Her rider decided,why not go ahead with it?(he'd disqualified them because he had to use both hands to pull the bridle up out of the way of her legs)so they continued and she went even better without the bridle.This horse here clearly knows the order of business as well.Impressive,the trust there.

And pulled it off without flaw. Crazy cool stuff, archived on film😳😮👏❤️ Sadly Ms Dreamy's score didn't count, Dan had to grab the headstall to keep it out of her way. In doing so, touched the rein with the second hand, which disqualified them.😢 But no one will ever say Ms Dreamy didn't do her final run like a Champion she was/is.

Two hand touch in motion is an immediate disqualification. Go watch 2018 AQHA World senior reining finals Ms. Dreamy and Dan Huss. It's all over YT. After her second spin and the beginning of her first circle the headstall breaks and falls Infront of her. Dan slides his free hand down the rein to grab the headstall...then completes a flawless pattern, bridleless. That was Ms. Dreamy's last run before retirement. No doubt it was one for the ages. Like this flawless triple jump.😲🎉👏 That it's caught on video for all to see, for all time... Priceless!!! 👍👏🤗

I think this is the perfect example of the difference between controlling a horse & making it do what you want, and riding with a horse where you can achieve anything as partners. The latter is what we all should aim for as it’s the best feeling in the world. I was lucky enough to experience that with a horse called Gump. Still miss him 😢

That was Ms. Dreamy's last run before retirement.

I think this is the perfect example of the difference between controlling a horse & making it do what you want, and riding with a horse where you can achieve anything as partners. The latter is what we all should aim for as it’s the best feeling in the world. I was lucky enough to experience that with a horse called Gump. Still miss him 😢
