Wow. You grow that much food with a small normal sized greenhouse. I’m extremely impressed. I thought you probably had a huge high tunnel sized green house. There’s hope for me yet.
You can grow a ton of transplants in a 10'x16' greenhouse. More than enough to supply my 1/4 acre garden and Greg's 1/4 acre garden and still have plenty to give away.
Once you get the garlic chives started you will have them forever. I've had mine for 3years and they have never stopped growing, 12 months out of the year they are rocking on.
I want to thank you for teaching me how to grow onions from seed. Im following along with your adventure and learning something with each video. On 9/11, I started seven varieties that id purchased the last few years. Greg getting on you back in August got me thinking i should give it a try this year. Three of the varieties were purchased from Hoss Tool, and they’ve had excellent germination. I truly appreciate that you send good viable seed. Ive had my share of dud packets from other suppliers.
I found your channel the other day. I've watched some of your videos and subscribed. A wealth of knowledge is being pushed out by you and it's much appreciated.
Would you do a video on selling at a farmers market?? I’m getting into it and would love to hear your word on what tiles and trick you may have with your experience.
I like to use mostly my native soil mixed with less than 50% fine potting soil. Our native soil is 1/3 montmorillonite clay 1/3 silt and 1/3 very fine sand. No need to fertilize and holds water well.
My onions this year was seed onions. But they are size of a golf ball . I fertilizer them twice a week. And use 20 0 0 fertilizer that I order from hoss tools garden
Okay the first (there’s more) understanding from your walkthrough is that once the seedling freely releases from the cell you next plant directly into the ground - not potting up to next side (or 2) of pot ... then to ground. Is that correct, what did i miss? Thank you. Lynette
Like to see you give temperature of your green house the night time temps and daytime temps for your starting plants I see a lot of growers use vermiculite on top of starting cells to break up soil from crusting
JUst got my Hoss tools onions seeds yesterday. Thanks for this right on the spot video. Now I'm just trying to figure out when I should sow. I live in south Louisiana and we are still having 90 degree F plus days. Around 70's at night. It is September the 4. I'm going to check with the almanac to see when the 75 degree days start. My first frost date is Nov 10. Should I go ahead and sow the cougar onion seeds I got from you guys now, or wait for cooler weather. I'm starting the seedlings under grow lights in my barn. Thanks. Love your show. Mike
It could, but it wouldn't be very effective because it takes a little while for the organic components to be broken into smaller molecules for the plants to absorb it. Also, most seed starting mixes are sterile, so there's no "biology" present to help break down those organic molecules. That's why we recommend using a light dose 20-20-20 on seedlings.
Have you ever tracked the temperatures in your greenhouse during the fall seedling period? If not, would you take a guess on the high temps. Even with the sides rolled up, I would expect it to be really hot for fall crops.
With the sides rolled up, it's probably 5-10 degrees hotter than outside. The only crop where we have to be careful is lettuce. Some lettuce varieties don't like warm soils for germination. So we have to wait til it cools a little to get those started.
After I’ve done this and my seeds are in, what do I need to look for as far as watering? How much and how often? I just received all my Hoss Tools gear and am starting my seeds tonight. Thanks for the info. I appreciate you guys.
The seed starting mix that you are using I see in the background it's quite a large bag will you offer that on your website soon I will be starting up my farm and going to have 10 50 x 50 slots quick 10 ft grass separating the plots I will have help but I need a lot of seed starting next well you have that on your site thanks again another great video
I tried to grow onions from seeds and put in my bed and did not seem to do anything but the following year the onions came up. I live in Michigan. You also told me to start my okra and transplant and that works good for me here in MIchigan. I do have a question about your tray your using in this video and the cells are small. can you start all your seeds in them then plant from them to garden? of course I think larger seeds would be to big but tomatoes?
Thanks, I was hoping for a video on onion seeds. Can you tell me when you will plant these out? I'm in San Antonio. I think I've heard to plant in December. Is it too early for me to seed them yet?
I ve just found your channel, and am interested in growing some big onions in north central Alabama. But I have to grow in containers, pots ,tubs, buckets ,etc. I ve only seen big onions grown in ground or raised beds. So can I grow big onions in containers? and if so how do I need to do it? What variety do I need for sweet onions here? I have a foot tub of mulitiplying onions, but that s it! I love onions and really like your videos, good instructions and info ! Thanks ! Brenda
Any of our short-day varieties will work. Start them now in trays and put them in your containers (about 6-8" apart) in November. They like plenty of water and plenty of nitrogen.
Click on any of the varieties on this page (hosstools.com/product-category/premium-garden-seeds/onions/), then scroll to the bottom and you'll see a map that tells you which type you should be planting. Then you can go back and filter by that particular type of onion.
When buying onion seeds or plants how fo you know if it is short intermediate or long day seeds or plants. I live in kansas and need intermediate plants. I have always bought what ever was there and planted it. I want big onions
That's a bit of the problem with buying them at a local store. They don't always know the variety or the "day-length" type. Buy from a reputable source online so you know that it is a variety that works in your area.
Is it a possibility that second generation okra seeds will produce tough okra? They're only 3"-4" in size They are red burgundy variety. I only had 5 okra plants and the okra were all woody from different plants. Please advise. Thanks.
@@gardeningwithhoss I know it's strange. The plants are acting like the end of the season of producing. The okra is only 4" long. I have fertilized them several times already. Hey Travis and Greg I always enjoy watching y’alls helpful growing tips I live in zone 8b in south Alabama what would be yalls best broccoli plant I should try and grow this fall?
Hello Travis. Got a question about sweet potato curing. This is our families first time ever growing them and we got 48lb out of a 20 foot row. We also have more coming in about 2 weeks. I'm in northern illinois so our 85 and humid days are behind us. Is there a contraption that you've heard of that will help me? Currently mine are in insulated bags and under a blanket, but I'm pretty sure they need both humidity and air. Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks and glad to have found your channel.
I am probably in your "zone". It would be a great help to me if your videos actually said " show was shot on such and such date". Even though some seeds have germinated and up, and some are not even up yet, I would have lot better guess as when I should have started my seed. Thanks in advance for your consideration. By the way, I could send you a picture of a tray of Spring tomatoes that was topped with Perlite next to plants covered with more soil. My luck with Perlite was pitiful when they got up to true leaf stage.

Yes. No need to "step up" to a larger pot, unless the plants start to become root bound in the trays and you're not ready to put them in the ground.

What growing zone are you in and do you know of any vegetables that can be started now in zone 7a? Thank you
We are in 8b. You can certainly grow collards. They're one of the most cold-tolerant crops out there.
Would you put your Heavy Duty Bottom Trays under the flats to water them, or would that keep the seeds too wet?
You could do that, just as long as you didn't leave too much standing water in there.
Can fish fertilizer be used on transplants overhead?
It could, but it wouldn't be very effective because it takes a little while for the organic components to be broken into smaller molecules for the plants to absorb it. What month would you recommend starting some onions from seed in zone 9a NE Florida
Right now.
@@gardeningwithhoss thank you
When we fertilize the seedlings with diluted triple 20 will it burn the leaves and or should it be watered again to wash off the residue
Not if you're using a low dose like we recommend. We never have any issues.
@@gardeningwithhoss thank you
What about adding a 20-30% block top over the greenhouse to reduce the sun and heat?
yes, that will work

Travis, do y'all carry Vidalia onion seeds or transplants ? Or do you sell any Grannix type onions that are similar to the Vidalia onion?
We just started a presale for Onion starts!

Unfortunately, those big bags are too heavy to ship UPS ground. So we can't offer them as an item on our site.
I am really interested in seeing you put the seeding for planting, with that perlite do it stay intact as well as soil?
Yes it stays intact very well.

@@gardeningwithhoss Thanky!
I've only grown onions from sets. What temperature Is best for germinating onion seeds?
Our outdoor temps have been in the high 70s, low 80s the last few weeks. The greenhouse is a little warmer than that.
Because of trees, my onion patch only gets about 4 hours of direct sun Nov-Feb. Will that OK for short day onions?
It might make them stay in the vegetative stage longer, which shouldn't hurt. Just as long as they do get 10-12 hours of sunlight to trigger bulbing.
Thanks, I was hoping for a video on onion seeds. Can you tell me when you will plant these out? I'm in San Antonio. I think I've heard to plant in December. Is it too early for me to seed them yet?
We plant ours in November. I would suggest that month for planting as well.

I am wondering if it makes sense to try to plant onions and leeks in the fall here in Zone B. Do you think that's too chancy?
Makes perfect sense. Go for it. You never know until you try.
How many weeks should I plan from starting onions from seed to placing in the garden?
5-6 weeks.

Do you make poppers for 162 cell? I have a hard time take the seeding out of those cell.
If you have a hard time removing them, that means they're not ready to be transplanted. They should pull easily from the cells when they're ready.
Can I come by and sweep up all that promix to help fill a raised bed I have????👍🙉
You wouldn't want to put this in a raised bed for planting. It's only good for seed starting. The mix is sterile and void of any nutrients.

Hmm. Not sure. We don't save our seeds, so haven't tested that theory. Red Burgundy okra usually stays tender up to 5-6" long.

We got ours from Atlas Greenhouse. You can find them online at www.atlasgreenhouse.com
What would the folks at dixondale farm say about that ?
Our results from last year were pretty conclusive. Hard to argue that the time out of the ground doesn't have an effect on the onion plant.
Where do you live planting this time of year?
South Georgia!
When will you harvest from all these seedlings?
We plant onions in November and will start harvesting in the next month.

We do peppers and some heirloom tomatoes. But for most everything, we plant directly from the 162 or 338 seed starting trays.

Green Magic does great in early fall.
It appears the perlite in the mix is a waste. It just floats to the top of small cells and makes a mess. Vermiculite works a lot better. Am I wrong? 🤔
He put it on top as a top dressing - it avoids the mix crusting over and turning anaerobic! I use vermiculite the same way.
The perlite in the seed starting mix doesn't float to the top. We just add extra perlite on top instead of covering with more soil.
Thanks
does pearl light help with all veg gardens
It helps with seed starting, but wouldn't necessarily want it in the in-ground garden soil.
@@gardeningwithhoss what about a raised bed gardening
I wouldn't add it to the soil unless you had some serious drainage issues -- which raised beds usually don't have.
