    I did the same thing with a folded over yoga mat. Sat for like 5 minutes and it made some decent depressions. Thought I'd share :)

    After years of having a sore arse I just accepted that this is part of cycling, tried 20 odd saddles through the years. After watching this video, it turns out mine are very narrow, I purchased a very uncomfortable looking saddle (128mm wide) & all my woes are in the past. No discomfort after 8+ hours of riding. Changed my life!

      If you don't mind me asking what size saddle were you using previously? I been running 143 saddles for years and today I discovered I have 105 bones +25 = 130 🥴

      @JimiAle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ryant75 I was trending bigger & wider to try and find some elusive comfort, think my last one was around 145-150mm.
      I found that many people buy bikes in the spring, have the same saddles & sell them secondhand. Cheap way to shop around & see what works for you before settling on something (literally).
      Currently I'm using the Bontrager Montrose 128mm on all my bikes.

      @@JimiAle thank you I appreciate your reply. The Montrose is a great saddle. I'm actually running one now haha.
      You was definitely going to big. A wider saddle might work better on upright bikes bit if you tilt and go into the drops forget about it. I tried that before also. Ouch
      Glad you found something that works. Take care my friend ✌️

      Hard to get a saddle for a emtb with the new fox dropper posts the clamps so big it take all the rail room up and can't slide it back that extra inch so scrunched up on my 5th saddle now all short rails so looking for something that will fit the dropper post clamps

    I tried everything; this, the aluminum foil technique, the wet paper towel and paper sheet technique, the yoga mat, pulling me down as hard as I can, sitting for 5 minutes, 5 seconds, everything. Nothing, no depression whatsoever. I guess I don't have any sit bones... that's maddening

    I truly appreciate Arts Cyclery videos and mail order service. With respect to saddle width I suggest that the "sit bones" are not the weight bearing seat contact...unless the cyclist rides sitting vertical. Using the same process in the video, but place fingertips under the "sit bones" and then lean forward like in cycling position...and feel the pressure reduce as you lean/rotate the pelvis forward. The main support on the saddle is actually forward of the sit bones toward the ramus pubis...over a much greater bone area. And this pelvis is actually narrower in that region than the sit bones as the pelvis narrows medially.

    This is vital, I just had a fit and the fit person put me on the correct width saddle, it changed my entire riding, my hips did not rock and my torso was stable. My power, efficiency, and stability increase dramatically.

    Wrap the cardboard in aluminium foil, then sit on it on your stairs. So much easier.

    • @jextejt
      @jextejt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      This method works great. ... when you sit on it on your stairs, grip the edge of the stair and pull yourself down on the cardboard some ... rock around a bit, you should be able to feel you "seat bones" digging into the board a bit. When you remove the cardboard, get it in the right light and angle to see the impressions. Take a "sharpie" pen and dot the center of your your impressions. 1" = 25.4 mm ... then add your 25-30 mm and you have your "sit bone width."

    My sitbones measure 103mm therefore a 128 -132mm saddle. That's a Fizik Arione which is a saddle for a snake. What if I am less flexible and according to Fizik am a Chamelion (Antares 140mm) or a Bull (Aliante 143mm).

    This comment is totally unrelated to anything to do with bike saddles. Your video is the first one that I have found after the most intense possible search which could be remotely related to my problem. I am afflicted with an enlarged prostate and have been on very effective medication which though totally satisfactory with respect to the condition has also produced extremely disturbing side effects including a great reduction in sight, totally dry mouth etc etc. I have seen videos that recommend sitting on a tennis ball for some fifteen minutes a day. Now I have found that the tennis ball merely sits on the sides of the sit bones . So this tennis ball thing turned out to be snake oil. I was wondering whether how bike saddles avoid this problem.There has to be a central section of the saddle even if this is made with a trough. What should be the width of the central section of the saddle to avoid contact with the sides of the sit bones where they join up in front. I hope you will be able to help me out wit an answer and thank you.

    Still waiting. Perhaps you would just like to go ahead and try our 2 x 4 test, although you would be the first in 22+ years. You see, when I tell people about the 2 x 4 test - which everyone has refused to take - and then ask them "So why do you do that (essentially take the 2 x 4 test) every time you ride?" I always get a blank look or a nervous laugh followed by an order. 100% of the time. You see ... these people have decided that
    a. The design of a traditional and/or traditional saddles makes no sense.
    b. They know if makes no sense because of all the problems they are having on a traditional and/or modified traditional saddle and
    c. They know it is ridiculous to try and keep one position all the time as if staying like a slave to one position like a statue (which is impossible) is an answer. As long as they are on a product which is not designed in accordance with the construct of the human body there can be no proper interface and therefore there will be problems.
    The idea of a fitter trying to teach you how to be safe and comfortable on a single platform saddle is EXACTLY as if I said to you and everyone else: "Let me teach you how to smoke properly."

      And why don't you share what you know instead of just that?

    • @jeffdixon321
      @jeffdixon321 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardminder Thank you for asking. That would be 23 years worth so where would you like to begin? Shall we begin with the fact that the 'traditional' or 'conventional' single platform bicycle saddles are not designed to fit humans properly?
      Humans are not designed to sit on something resembling 10 inches of 2 x 4 up on edge. The human bum - besides it other uses and functions - has something called a 'sitting feature.' Likewise, it should be obvious that the perineum, prostate, tailbone and your 'junk' do NOT have a sitting feature.
      Therefore all single platform seats that are NOT designed in full accordance of these facts - and this is the case - must be flawed, and in being flawed and unable to interface with the human anatomy properly will have negative repercussions. Try putting a Toyota motor in a Chev when it obviously wasn't designed for it. It is pretty simple: lack of proper interface - and with the interface being 'direct' - means not just damage, but DIRECT damage.
      Let's start with this. Now it is your turn.

    • @jeffdixon321
      @jeffdixon321 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardminder TYPO - sorry everyone. This: Therefore all single platform seats that are NOT designed in full accordance of these facts - and this is the case - must be flawed, and in being flawed and unable to interface with the human anatomy properly will have negative repercussions.
      Should read:
      Therefore all single platform seats are NOT designed in full accordance of these facts - and this is the case - must be flawed, and in being flawed and unable to interface with the human anatomy properly will have negative repercussions.
