    I ride freeride saddles on all my bikes with gel covers over them. I put 2 on each saddle one over the other and make sure they are secured tightly. I don’t use padded shorts and just ride in football/soccer shorts or tracky bottoms. I’ve also started putting soft bag for life carrier bags over the seat and taping them neatly round the seat post which completely stops any kind of chafing even on long distance riding and also protects the seat

    Hey, you seem to be talking only about saddles made for male cyclists. Perhaps you could make another video catering for female cyclists and saddles, and maybe talk about touring as well as sports cycling?

  • @artscyclery875
    @artscyclery875  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi there! Thanks for the suggestion. The same principles for finding a saddle apply whether you are a male or a female. A few notable differences between male and female saddles are that female saddles are generally wider as females have wider sit bones, and generally also prefer a wider nose to the saddle. Cut outs may vary as well.

  • @artscyclery875
    @artscyclery875  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It does sound like a wider saddle with a generous cutout would be best for you, the Toupe and Romin would fit the build. It is unlikely to be able to try all the different saddles on a bike but you can sit on them on a bench and get a pretty good feel. You have to also remember that your muscles will shape themselves around the saddle, so it might take a couple weeks for the saddle to fit like a glove.

  • @artscyclery875
    @artscyclery875  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    A saddle with a generous cutout is best. We recently reviewed the Selle Italia Superflow and we really feel like this is the best way to go if you have a problem with numbness.

    If you went with around a 134 width you'd want to look for a flatter profile saddle like a Prologo Zero II Pas or a Prologo Nago. If you went with something wider you'd want to look for a more rounded profile like a Fizik Aliante.

  • @artscyclery875
    @artscyclery875  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    A flatter profile saddle will provide more support for your sit bones and give you a stable platform for pedaling. A more rounded saddle is for people who are more muscular and do not need as much support.

    The measuring idea is great. The lighting on the saddles is not enough. The middle of the saddle cut outs are hard to see

    how about saddle width for a blobby guy 50+ and overweight ....trying hard to get fit .... seems like i sit up more than get down and aggressive .. am assuming something flatter than the middle one you show here so i think the flatter wider profile is best..is that realistic?

      @artscyclery875  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gordon Kinghorn If you are mostly riding in a more upright position, a wider saddle will better suit your needs. Look for a saddle that has a width of around 160-170mm and a good amount of padding.

      Art's Cyclery Even after all this, afer we measure our sitting bones, after getting the right saddle, etc., are we still at risk of damaging our pudendal nerve? If so how can we protect it? Also more generally how we protect our genitals and eliminate saddle soreness?

    • @mikenagle9931
      @mikenagle9931 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RoScFan Try a split seat, works for me. Also, the idea that cycling damages the pudendal nerve leading to erectile dysfunction has been debunked by statistical study. When data are controlled for age, it has been found that cyclists have no greater incidence of erectile dysfunction than a random sample of the general population of non-cyclists of the same age.

    Hi Art's Cyclery!
    My seatbone width is 120mm. I guess the saddle should be around 145mm, right?
    What you recommend for saddle shape that suits me better? I'm 6'3 ft tall and weight 175lb (79+kg). Thanks!

  • @artscyclery875
    @artscyclery875  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, you want to add 25-30mm to your sit bone width to find the correct saddle width.

    I spend about 50% of my time sitting a bit up right on the tops and the other 50% in a fairly aggressive position. How do I go about getting a saddle that's comfortable for both?

    • @artscyclery875
      @artscyclery875  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      J90JAM Saddle preference is different for everybody. The best way to find a saddle that fits you the best is to try out as many saddles as you can until you find "the one". Good luck!!

    i ride aggressive on the flats (drops) but i mainly ride out the saddle when climbing. what i do find is, i get a little rubbing on the inside of my thigh with the Arione when riding on the drops, any tips? thanks in advance.

    • @artscyclery875
      @artscyclery875  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      livibam Sounds like it could be a cleat position or other fit issue if it is happening asymmetrically. If you are getting rubbing on both sides, you might look into trying a saddle with a narrower nose like a Selle Italia SLR. But if you like the shape of the Arione and the rubbing is the only issue, a good fix may be to go with one of the higher end Ariones like the 00 version. The sides of the nose are very short so you might find that this saddle rubs a bit less. What saddles do you recommend to alleviate soreness and numbness in the perineal area?

    • @artscyclery875
      @artscyclery875  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andy J Before buying a saddle, I suggest measuring your sit bones, which we also have a video for: th-cam.com/video/E7j9LUVJrjA/w-d-xo.html
      Beyond that, a saddle with a cutaway or channel will help alleviate perineal area issues. Here are couple great options:

    I have a very narrow sit measurement, 110mm. I am 5' 7 1/2" tall and 140. would the Selle Italia Superflow 130 be the better choice for me?

    • @artscyclery875
      @artscyclery875  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam Frost Daniel here, I'm the guy measured in this video th-cam.com/video/E7j9LUVJrjA/w-d-xo.html. My sit bones are at 100mm and I've been riding 130mm SLR's for a few years now and they fit me great. I think the 130 is going to be your best bet on the Superflow.

    • @artscyclery875

      The concor shown in the video is a older model, comparable to the current concor Racing saddle. If you are looking for flat saddles, you may want to also consider the Specialized Toupe, bit.ly/2eRmhPO

    I never really thought about saddle shape...I bought a Romin Evo a few weeks ago, was measured 155mm for my ideal width and riding position, but after 2 70km rides with it and a few shorter ones, it's still extremely uncomfortable. My sit bones are constantly in pain. I'm not sure if I should give it another week or so, as it doesn't seem to be getting better. I also don't think a narrower saddle would work for me. Any suggestions?

    • @artscyclery875
      @artscyclery875  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you were measured at 155, we'd definitely recommend staying with that width. That being said, different saddles, even ones of the same width, can vary greatly i how they fit an individual. We'd recommend trying out another model of the same width, or even another brand until you find one that's right for you. Unfortunately with saddles, finding the right one is only possible with a lot of trial and error!

    can you tell me how you define muscular thighs? I'm fairly skinny in aggressive profile, fairly flexible but experience blister at crevice of inner thigh and groin area. any ideas if I need wider or narrower saddle shape? thanks!!

    • @artscyclery875
      @artscyclery875  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jcc2150 Muscular thighs just refers to someone with large thighs that might cause rubbing on the saddle. In your situation, it sounds like you will want a more narrow saddle to prevent rub on the inner thigh area. If you are still experiencing rub or discomfort, getting a fit at your local bike shop is great way to resolve such issues. Thanks for watching!

    • @NewbArchitect
      @NewbArchitect 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Art's Cyclery thanks! well I did get a fit when I bought the bike. I also verified with the competitive cyclist fit calculator online. they pretty much all match up. my bib seems snug and comfy but when in saddle 20miles max I start feeling some pain/numbness. I've considered cutout saddles but the 2 points put more pressure so I never went back to those since I got the bike 5 yrs ago...maybe I should consider again? I tend to slide back in saddle when I feel pressure in front but doesn't always help. ill try a narrow saddle, but round like concor? it has a 5mm dip I think, its more subtle than fizik aliante (one I have) would a flat/narrow be good? thanks again!

      No. If you're spending a lot of time in the saddle on a dirt jump bike, then you're most certainly on the wrong bike. I wouldn't concern yourself with saddle design on a dirt jumper unless it's causing you major pain or frustration.

    If and or but. Maybe possibly could be. That is what these people offer. Meanwhile you keep buying seats and paying fitters while you accumulate damage. Single platform seats are not constructed in a way that 'jives' with the human body properly. If the design is flawed - as all single platform seats are - then there will be discomfort and damage to sensitive urological and neurological vessels. The idea that the way to escape this is to try and hold one position on your bike and ONLY that for all time on the bike like a statue is so utterly ridiculous it is completely moronic. By the way ... How many saddles have you bought now? How many fitters have you seen?
    Our clients only buy one saddle for all time unless they have another bike or are buying one for a spouse or friend. Look at our testimonials and reviews on other TH-cam videos. You have your proof! Or you can keep listening to these people and say "Hello" to a urologists for me either before or after you get the bad news.
    This person here will not respond to me and if he does it will be even worse for him as ZERO evidence is on their side. But once again I throw down the gauntlet. Let's see if it gets picked up. Be safe, comfortable and powerful on your bike (and later after the shower, pizza and beer) right here: spongywonder.com

    Was hoping this video was actually going to show you how to measure a saddle...not just read a sticker on a box.
    People like me who have half a dozen saddles at home, and those who are curious what their bike came stock with, want to know how to measure those saddles.
