    What i love about the sound of sm57s on drums in particular is they smooth out harsh frequencies in the cymbals. Especially for digital recording, dynamic mics are a really good idea for lots of applications to avoid harshness. They (and ribbon mics) can add a “tape-like” quality to digital recordings since they are fairly flat in frequency response above 1k and roll off gently the super high-end. Too many cheap condensors have a 5k peak that makes drums sound way too harsh.

      I don't think it was all SM57s, but they definitely used a lot of them for all the close mics. (I think the overheads were 414s)

      There were a lot if Unidyne 3's in there instead of 57's. Back then they only had so many full fledged 57's at Sunset sound.

    I had a feeling an sm57 would do the trick for capturing "attack" with a bass drum. However, im happy to see it can be used as a stand alone mic. Thanks for posting. This was helpful!

      @@rockboy360 I have done more or less that. My go-to way to record the bass drum is an Audio-technica ATM29 (Audio-technica's direct rival for the SM57) and a speaker.

    It cracks me up how talking about using 57s to record drums starts a turf war. I read that Woodstock was recorded only using 58s. I actually prefer 57s at live gigs, because I dont have to be paranoid about someone knocking over mic stands with $1100 414s or $3000 ua7s. 57s are tanks, and they sound perfectly fine. They are also easy to mix because they are not picking up all the guitar amps.

    It is mostly who is doing it rather than with what you are doing with. Of course it matters but you can make something sound nice with cheap kit too. I will never be able to afford pro mic kit I will use cheap things but still I will get decent sound at the end. OF CORUSE NOT PRO but enough for TH-cam videos to my liking. Thanks for posting this.

    Honestly, I'd like to see your EQ curves for the processed mics. I use 57's on most of my kit and I haven't found an EQ that works as well with them.

    • @speakervox2563
      @speakervox2563  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Mathew,
      Unfortunately I didn’t take down documentation/pics of my eq Settings, I wish I would of as I got some nice sounds out of the setup.
      If I’m remembering correctly Most of the processing was done with my outboard Gear that varied from my Spl transient Designer, inward connections Brat EQ’s (which I highly recommend !) and some vintage Spheer 823 Eq’s which are also amazing! A bit of Compression from my Dbx 160x for Kick n SNR as it’s normally what I use.

  • @MarcoPolux
    @MarcoPolux ปีที่แล้ว

    The toms man!!! I am trying to find the best way to mic all my drumset (3 toms, 2 floor toms one each side, percs at the left above the floor tom, lots of cymbals..... today only with 8 channels.... so no mic for every drum.... man!! there is A LOT of possibilities here>
    1 kick, 1 snare up and 1 snare down, 2 overheads, the other 3 WHEEEERE?? maybe the floor toms because they just rumble if not, and the toms and percs being more high pitched can cut trhough the mix....
    I might jump to MADI so I will have more channels for the Drums.... but, that is a never ending story.

  • @stuckondrumsssss1968
    @stuckondrumsssss1968 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im just starting out recording my drums and its tricky ( for me ) to figure out the 57's placement for overheads. For the 57"s to be turned up enough to pickup the cymbals and hi-hat decently, the rest of the kit is to hot ( clipping ) according to the meter.

    • @dylanwilliams1195
      @dylanwilliams1195 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mix the hi hat on its own a bit closer if ya wanna get that more focused. Same with the ride. Idk that I’d use the 57 ideally as an overhead but you absolutely CAN and get good results. Just might be a bit easier with a SDC
