That just introduces an additional point of failure and does not decrease the likelihood of failure at any preexisting points. The only benefit I see in such a use case is that an adapter may make it more obvious whether the cable is fully plugged in, and the suboptimal (as in 12VHPWR) connection isn't directly to the GPU so any failure at this more likely point would not be at the GPU, making any potential failure far less costly.
