Does this make any difference if the GPU's connector is 12v-2x6 but the PSU and PSU cable are still 12VHPWR?

Yes, there is a difference even if the GPU's connector is 12V-2x6 while the PSU and PSU cable remain 12VHPWR. The 12V-2x6 connector is an updated version of the 12VHPWR standard with improvements, particularly in safety and durability.

@@ezdiy-fab8483 The way I see it, it improves the safety of the connection with the GPU, which would be 12v-2x6 to 12v-2x6, but the connection between the PSU cable and the adapter would be 12VHPWR to 12v-2x6 like the PSU cable to GPU connection would be without the adapter. That just introduces an additional point of failure and does not decrease the likelihood of failure at any preexisting points.
The only benefit I see in such a use case is that an adapter may make it more obvious whether the cable is fully plugged in, and the suboptimal (as in 12VHPWR) connection isn't directly to the GPU so any failure at this more likely point would not be at the GPU, making any potential failure far less costly.
