I loved the smirk on her face when she enters. It was the celebration of Madonna's first MTV Awards performance 'Like a virgin' with the cake and Madonna as the bride standing next to a mannequin doll dressed as a groom at the very first MTV Awards show. They recreated that performance with the two pop princesses of that time (2000's), Britney and Christina, as brides, while Madonna was now the groom. It was nothing more than a "You may now kiss the bride" moment. I never understood the controversy, I mean it was just a friendly kiss as Madonna herself quoted later.
Only Madonna can pull off another iconic reprise 19 years later of her 1984 MTV VMA performance of LAV. She was a “lonely bride” then dreaming of a groom; here she envisioned a powerful all-female ensemble; no less than Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera backing her; Madonna this time plays the groom and gives “the kiss” to the brides, followed by a rap segment by Missy Elliott that complemented the rap in the Hollywood number. I think with Britney and Christina agreeing to do this, attest to the esteem they have for Madonna for her trailblazing influence on the younger generation of female pop music idols. People may have been surprised by ‘the kiss’ here-but Madonna was most likely paying homage to 2 of her early Hollywood female icons-Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich who both cross-dressed as men and dared kissed women on the movie screen. In her 1990 Vogue lyrics, she named them with other early female film stars she admired and she praised them…”They had style..they had grace…Ladies with an attitude..”. She was merely following in their footsteps, breaking barriers and continuing the struggle for female empowerment. Other than “the kiss”, the media also feasted on focusing on Justin Timberlake’s seeming “annoyed” demeanor here amidst his highly publicized breakup with Britney in 2002 after a 3-yr romantic relationship with her. In fact, it was JT who broke-up with her, and like Britney he had admired Madonna as an artist and in 2008 he’d collaborate with her in recording the song and video of 4 Minutes from her Hard Candy album. Madonna had a history of pushing us and pushing culture, and that’s what was great about her and what was great about MTV. Glad I was able to witnessed this cultural moment.
So Britney talked about this moment in her book. It starts back when she broke up with Justin, after all he did to her, etc. One day she was in her apartment, feeling depressed over the breakup, and the doorman announces that Madonna was on her way up. They had never met nor talked to each other. She said that Madonna helped bring her back to life in the following months. So Madonna wanted to do this performance with Pink and J.Lo. She met Pink in the Regis and Kelly show and dropped the idea and J. Lo didn’t want to do the kiss. So she invited her friend Britney and Christina because she was doing very well with her Stripped album. Missy and Madonna had just collaborated in a remix of Into the Groove for a commercial for GAP, so that was a no brainer for her to be invited. Britney said that in rehearsals the kiss was just a peck and then on to Missy’s part. But on the day of the performance she was feeling really bold. She decided to go balls to the wall to the kiss and she had no idea it would be this historic. Then on backstage Madonna gave her a Swarovski incrusted pendant of a letter B, matching her own M pendant. The press was all over these two for photos and interviews, but Christina was left behind. The fact that they cut to Justin and didn’t show her kiss as they showed Britney’s only made her angrier, because she didn’t get any press regarding that. She even went on tv shows wearing shirts that said “I kissed Madonna too!”. After that she teamed up with Justin on his smear campaign against Britney. Also, Britney was feeling very bold that day so she invited Madonna to do Me Against The Music backstage on VMA’s, to which Madonna said yes. More about MATM when you react to that video 😉
Britney definitley went all pornstar on the day of the performance with the kiss lol I read Xtina commented on it that it wasnt like this in rehearsals and she was probably a little upset, Britney got all the attention, they cut to Justin instead of showing the Madonna/ Xtina one in full. Interesting, how it would have worked out with JLo and Pink. I know they both love Madonna and Madonna likes them too. Pink i would see but yeah for some reason at that time, i find it hard to see Jlo rolling on the floor and snogging other women...the Britney/ xtina/ Madonna performance was perfect as it was, especially with Madonna being the Queen of Pop and them two seen as rivals for the Princess of Pop throne. I am sure Jlo and Pink would have been iconic too, though but Madonna seems good friends with Britney now, so it all worked out like it should, i thinl.

The most amazing thing was they kept it under wraps quite a bit, at least i didnt know what to expect and it was like Whats happening when i first saw it. Very entertaining performance for sure. Hollywood definitely deserved more attention than just the kiss. Mind you, Britney opened her mouth more during the performance than during rehearsals lol Xtina confirmed and Xtinas kiss kinda got ignored. Also Britney pre recorded her solo part, while Xtina and Madonna were 100% live. Missy thrown in at the end was like What is happening now, what else is gonna happen?? haha It was a great opening the VMAS 2003. It was actually one of the few really last very great VMAS and one that really produced iconic moments.

Yaaaassss!!!!! The incredible performance and the celebrities acting sassy in the audience. Justin Timberlake was pissed because Brittany is his ex. Lourdes, Madonna’s daughter was a flower girl. Madonna left for Europe after this show and did not know about the ruckus in the states for a bit, lol.

This performance was a big deal back in the day, new generations have no idea how relevant MTV was in the music business and the VMAs were such exciting, irreverent and expected events, the hype was so high. Now, Britney and Christina were the top pop girls and rivals, having them together on stage was also a big deal in itself. Madonna entering as the groom and pop queen was ICONIC and badass. The kiss was only the cherry on top of the cake. It was Madonna's idea of course, and people talked about it for years after. It is such a moment in pop history, music history, TV history, lgbt history, etc

Y'all should take a moment to check out the Gap commercial Madonna and Missy Elliot made around this time. Incorporates this song mashed up with another M classic and a Missy rap. It's only about a minute long, so maybe you could tack it on with one of your other reactions? BTW her daughter Lola was one of the flower girls at the beginning.
Those kisses were everywhere back then 😅 There wasn’t a newspaper or a tv show that didn’t cover that. However the performance itself was absolutely stunning. They did a great number together and looking at the performance after 21 years it sort of feels even better now. And those topics they are portraying are even more important now I think.

She was my mom's favorite, dressed like her and thought she was the coolest girl. Now? My mom cant stand her lol. But shes my #1 of all time. I know all of her music and seen all tours and interviews. Im gay, she's the first to openly fight for us before it was a trend to support gay people . She did it in the 80s. I would have suggested watching that first, so you could enjoy the cultural homage. Hi Ladies, Always loved this performance. Was sad, though, that MTV was more interested in the Justin/Britney drama to cut to him instead of seeing Christina also kiss Madonna. (The fact that this was a bit scandalous is absolute irony, considering what MTV was showing at the time) Christina didn't have to bear the brunt, but I saw an interview lately that she wished the cameras didn't cut. She felt bad for Brit having to deal with dumb media fodder. In 2024 ppl would be bored with this.. Hello... WAP? OMG. I also love the song but not the album version. Britney definitley went all pornstar on the day of the performance with the kiss lol I read Xtina commented on it that it wasnt like this in rehearsals and she was probably a little upset, Britney got all the attention, they cut to Justin instead of showing the Madonna/ Xtina one in full.
Interesting, how it would have worked out with JLo and Pink. I know they both love Madonna and Madonna likes them too. Pink i would see but yeah for some reason at that time, i find it hard to see Jlo rolling on the floor and snogging other women...the Britney/ xtina/ Madonna performance was perfect as it was, especially with Madonna being the Queen of Pop and them two seen as rivals for the Princess of Pop throne.

The most amazing thing was they kept it under wraps quite a bit, at least i didnt know what to expect and it was like Whats happening when i first saw it. Very entertaining performance for sure.
Hollywood definitely deserved more attention than just the kiss. Mind you, Britney opened her mouth more during the performance than during rehearsals lol Xtina confirmed and Xtinas kiss kinda got ignored. Also Britney pre recorded her solo part, while Xtina and Madonna were 100% live. Missy thrown in at the end was like What is happening now, what else is gonna happen?? haha It was a great opening the VMAS 2003. It was actually one of the few really last very great VMAS and one that really produced iconic moments.

This performance was a big deal back in the day, new generations have no idea how relevant MTV was in the music business and the VMAs were such exciting, irreverent and expected events, the hype was so high.
Now, Britney and Christina were the top pop girls and rivals, having them together on stage was also a big deal in itself.
Madonna entering as the groom and pop queen was ICONIC and badass.
The kiss was only the cherry on top of the cake. It was Madonna's idea of course, and people talked about it for years after.

They did a great number together and looking at the performance after 21 years it sort of feels even better now. And those topics they are portraying are even more important now I think.

She was my mom's favorite, dressed like her and thought she was the coolest girl. Now? My mom cant stand her lol. But shes my #1 of all time. I know all of her music and seen all tours and interviews. Im gay, she's the first to openly fight for us before it was a trend to support gay people . She did it in the 80s. Shes also the highest selling female artist in the world , Gieness Book of World Records too . She out did everyone. In the 80s , she said she would too lol

Hi ladies!! So, have you seen Madonna’s first 1984 VMA’s performance of Like A Virgin? If not, this performance is recreating that, in reference to the wedding dresses and the cake. I would have suggested watching that first, so you could enjoy the cultural homage. It was that first MTV VMA’s, that not only solidified her as a pop superstar, but it was her first “scandal”, even her manager at the time ( 84’) who told her she’d just ruined her career, what did he know. Lol

Always loved this performance. Was sad, though, that MTV was more interested in the Justin/Britney drama to cut to him instead of seeing Christina also kiss Madonna. (The fact that this was a bit scandalous is absolute irony, considering what MTV was showing at the time) Christina didn't have to bear the brunt, but I saw an interview lately that she wished the cameras didn't cut. She felt bad for Brit having to deal with dumb media fodder.
