  • You would think that a new shooter would come with an experienced shooter so as to instruct them on how to shoot safely and correctly. Well guess again. Not a day on the range goes by that I’m not faced with shooters that have never shot let along ever touched a firearm. Now we all know a RSO is not to instruct because it takes time away from their actual duty but face it instruction is part of their duty. Just not a full blown firearm first timers or safety class. In this video I do a mock encounter with a new shooter so you can see how I do a 10 minute welcome to shooting a firearm class. All of you can take this video and use it when you take a new shooter to the range also.

Nice review of basics. I am still “adjusting” every time I go to range. Sometimes I feel it is like I am trying to fix my golf swing. Lots to think about. It can paralyze.

If you spent 5 minutes with 1 shooter, that's 5 minutes that you're not watching the rest of the firing line. Your team should consist of someone to welcome patrons and explain the rules of the range away from the firing line, but the RSO on the line needs to focus on the line.

YES!!! Absolutely. I'm with you. This is just too much. I know cause I made this mistake my first year. However, I love everything that this video is about. This topic is range safety gold and good on this guy for putting it out there. Thanks, I'm gonna watch all your stuff sir. But this presentation is (respectfully) impractical, inappropriate and takes too much time. They can't hear, they're not listening, can't focus and can't hear anyway! RSOs are the only soul(s) responsible for everyone's safety, not teaching. This talk is only for the range counter or class. Love your warm demeanor but there's NO WAY you know what's goin on in YOUR range. I only step in and interject if one of the cardinal safety rules is broken OR for professionally good practice that I see often...that's it. For example: please let your buddy practice whatever you want to teach them with an unloaded gun first; you're hitting the ceiling, please get a bigger target; it's loud in here, huh? Slow down, take your time, no need to rush). And, it's 1 sentence at a time. That's it.

Very true. It is a fine balance. When I stop to help people I assess the line and have told people that I can't help them right now but give me a few moments. Most time I would rather give them a two minute lesson then for them to just start shooting with no instruction. I will not leave a new shooter high and dry but I always recommend that they take a class or come with someone who know how to shoot.

I’d probably skip talking about breathing for new shooters, and go more into the three rules and how to get into sight alignment and sight picture.

The thing I like about the breathing is it calms new shooters down. You are correct about sighting and it is the most untaught skill people teach new shooters.

I’m not sure about IL but here if your the RSO to be able to give firearm teaching/instructions you also need to be a USCCA or NRA pistol instructor. Does this hold true in IL as well?

At Range USA it is highly suggested that you have an RSO certificate from the NRA but just to give firearm handling instructions to new shooters you do not need to be a certified instructor. To discuss firearm classes and to issue a certificate to students you need to be either NRA or USCCA certified. Th e instruction I do in the range is basic so the shooter learns and has a good experience.

@Prep U You can't be a certified RSO without first being an Instructor.

@@37mmOHIO you surely can be an NRA RSO without being credentialed for other classes. RSO is officially part of the NRA Instructor program though.
