    I live in MInneapolis and have for 9 years. It is a wealthy white collar Fortune 500 city, well educated, fit, and walkable. The arts scene is very strong. The vibe here is strongly northern, a bit aloof, and white collar. Winters are brutal here. We have very walkable lakes and rivers. He's right you can walk to everything here. The downside is crime, particularly auto theft and carjackings, which are skyrocketing compared to 2019. The murder rate is double what it was in 2019. You can move to the areas he mentioned, but you will pay a lot. I would avoid the north side, Lake Street (destroyed in the GF riots) and Uptown, which used to be "yuppie" and now is downright scary at times. Downtown is ok. Loring Park is ok. The university area is ok. The lakes areas he mentioned are safer and richer. If I were moving here I would probably only live in the SW - the lakes, but you will pay for that.

    If you are going to move to MN, stay away from Minneapolis and St. Paul. Honestly, you are going to want to be in at least a 2nd tier suburb, if not 3rd tier. These areas are generally safe and pleasant. The taxes are ridiculous here and it is cold AF in the winter, so bring a coat.

    Lived in Mpls in the 70's, and came back in the 90's to find it completely different, and not for the better. It used to be safe to walk downtown at night. I understand it's gotten a lot worse over the last 25 years. Part of the change happened because of legistlation elsewhere. Neighboring states had tightened their welfare laws and the '3 Strikes and Out' for felons had been enacted in those same states. Consequently some of the worst of the worst from neighbor states moved to Mpls. Worked downtown at the time and had more than one person tell me they'd just gotten off the bus and wanted to know where the welfare office was. The locals don't seem to get it...

    • @miketeacher9016
      @miketeacher9016 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are absolutely correct, it has changed for the worse. Minneapolis is no longer safe since the aftermath of COVID and the divisive riots after George Floyd. Crime has increased significantly and no one feels safe except those who live in the suburbs. Citizens are unfriendly, arrogant, unhelpful, and unconcerned. I am a teacher and I would not have my children attend either Minneapolis of St. Paul schools because of the violence. I could go on but it would be futile to list all the problems. I'm a grown man and I don't go out after the sun sets because the Minneapolis police force is understaffed by 300 officers. It is a dangerous situation.

    • @bobbradford6838
      @bobbradford6838 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      buckfan1969,
      I so get it!
      And I understand why you paraphrase most locals don’t get how Minneapolis & St. Paul encourage crime.
      I’ve been to at least 50 large cities last 3 years in New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Turkey, Hawaii & rest of USA and the worst city of those 50 in terms of harassment & intimidation not even 10% as bad as downtown Minneapolis.
      I wish I was wrong because I’m a downtown Minneapolis resident. I just call it as I see it.
      OK, some cities such as Miami, Chicago, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Denver, Seattle have worse neighborhoods than Minneapolis.
      But the point I try to make it’s hard to enjoy yourself in tourist areas (aka Nicollet Mall, Hennepin Ave, Loring Park) or restaurants in Minneapolis without getting harassed or bullied or seeing obnoxious scenes.
      AKA, South Florida has more crime than Minnesota but what Twin City residents don’t understand or believe me is when I tell then I can walk downtown Ft. Lauderdale to the busy districts where all the arts, restaurants, bistros are and it’s 50 times less odds to get intimated or harassed than Minneapolis. In other words I can enjoy myself without always having to look over my shoulder.
      In Ft. Lauderdale I never cringe thinking about what could be around the corner which is so healthy and liberating!
      THIS IS WHAT MINNEAPOLIS LOCALS DON’T GET AND OUR CITY LEADERS DON’T CARE!
      This 50 times lack of harassment same thing downtown Denver, Chicago, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Miam, Seattle and all these other cities in Europe, New Zealand, Australia & Turkey. Yes, these far away international cities have more pick pocket experts, gypsies and con artists but they don’t intimidate you like Minneapolis. And yes I’m not dumb enough to think bad things physically can’t happen to you in Chicago, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Miami , Seattle, Denver because it can! My point you can’t enjoy yourself in Minneapolis like all these other non-Minnesota places. Because the harassment in all these other non-Minnesota cities usually are domestic or in bad neighborhoods the tourists residents can avoid them unlike Minneapolis.
      However, I will say this. Being a downtown Minneapolis resident I’ve noticed last 3 months threats toward me down 85% and unwanted incidents down 50%.
      That’s because FBI in unmarked clothes are busting gangs left in right and if caught with felonies or grand theft will go to prison much longer than if busted by the Minneapolis Police.
      Believe me! I’m just as angry and FRUSTRATED as you! But if you haven’t been downtown Minneapolis in a while, give it another visit and you’ll ‘likely’ notice less bullshit and more fun vibrancy in restaurants & energy that will somewhat remind you of the good old days.

      It’s gone so downhill. I used to love it here in south mpls, but now I’m desperately trying to leave. People should not come here. The crime is killing the city and the locals are too sanctimonious to admit there is a problem. I feel so gaslighted in interactions every time I bring it up with somebody in conversation, either gaslighted, shunned, or they go into this bizarrely vicious attack mode. What is wrong with the people here?!! You guys seem to get it! Why don’t others? I feel like the people who defend it aren’t even from here much of the time. I’ve lived here 15 years and used to love it, but now I hope I can get out and go somewhere better.

    People never talk about all the “income restricted” housing. These make it difficult to find affordable housing if you’re working class and make slightly more than their allowed amount. These dominate the safer areas of the cities.
    So if you’re a working class person like me and on a budget you’re going to be living in a less desirable area with more crime and less amenities.
    I understand we need affordable housing but can’t they just do a percentage of income?
    As a single, working class female, I feel overlooked. I want a safe place to live too.
    If I were a single mother of 4, I’d be fine. But I’m not and trust me, the twin cities isn’t so MN nice unless you’re wealthy or down and out. In between? Lol. You’re nothing

  • @crayolascents
    @crayolascents ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Back in the day the Minnesota legislature had a good balance of pro-social policy and pro-business. The two in a balance produce a great standard of living, mindful of the poor and disenfranchised. However, about five years ago that balance was lost and is getting more and more one sided. The social policies are great, nothing wrong with them. But, where are the businesses that once had an equitable existence? There is nobody to represent them favorably and nobody does. So the businesses move, just like they had to leave San Fran, Portland, and Seattle for the same reasons.
    We don't need to abandon progressive agenda, but progressive agenda needs to be balanced with things that pay for the agenda. That is lost now in most major metros. Activists, left to their own devices, always produce a city in poverty, crime, drugs, and trash. The kids aren't learning about balance, they are just learning social justice. So they demand spending, they are anti-business, and when the progressive policy produces a crime haven of filth with broken roads they are clueless as to how it came to this.

      @@0x00amaybe. That is after when the 94 was built and divided neighborhoods. Democrat Redlining created a low income black majority neighborhoods. It was bad, but not as bad a Chicago. In the 80-90s, Chicago transplants bought up and renovated many neighborhoods. I bought a home in 2001 and there still was bullet holes in my neighbors walls. The neighborhoods were getting better. Democrats then caused more division and encouraged riots and burning of local businesses. My favorite restaurants were burned down. My old neighborhood is garbage. It was a safer place when I lived there. Now it's not. We moved last year. We had to protect our kids.

      Minneapolis now has more crime than Chicago with the exception of murder, fast catching up……. The city is paralyzed with fear after the George Floyd incident…… The Police Force has been reduced in size and demoralized. Major Corporations are having difficulties bringing back the workforce to the office, many are afraid. The taxes are high, the schools once the pride of the Nation have disintegrated. A massive culture change has taken place due to a very large group of refugees brought into the city during the 1990s and 2000s. There is still hope the City will survive and prosper, but the liberals are going to have to come to realize…. A diverse culture does not imply stability or peace. Without safety you have nothing. The children in school benefit from structure and intense academics, with those presenting behavior problems to be removed so the rest of the class can learn. And finally, you can not tax your way out of bad policy…….. Minneapolis was once a great city that a Northern European Culture built, well not so much anymore….

      This person is correct. Ever since the George Floyd riots downtown Minneapolis is very unsafe after the bars let out. And the Uptown area he mentioned has really devolved after the riots. It has not gotten better.

      Y’all need to stop focusing on the worst parts of Minneapolis, that all got brought to attention in 2020 but crime was a LOT worse in the early 90’s than it is now
