Financially if you're not where you want to be this is for you! | Ryan Leslie | Producergrind Clips

  • Ryan Leslie tells us the number one way to get more placements and to make more money as a producer. He talks about the unique ability we have to be connected to every opportunity we could ever want through our phones. He then makes a comparison to the percentage of contacts we utilize in our phones and the percentage of our brain we use as humans. He also says if you're not in the position you want to be financially, or in your career you need to spend the same amount of time you spend getting nice at producing, you need to be getting nice at building relationships. If you're not making 30 phone calls a day, its time to start!

People seem to forget Ryan Leslie is a genius that went to Harvard at 15. Some shit just isn’t luck. A lot of it depends on intelligence, and a persons ability to process information, because we all process different. I’m sure this cat would be successful in anything he attempted.

The point still stands though. Consistency and hard work produces results. That's why he used Nip as an example. Nip didn't go to Harvard. You show up everyday and put in work and progress will come. It might not get you there fast. Maybe not even get exactly where you set out to go initially but it will get further than where you've been and that's what's important.

Everything Leslie said was correct. As someone who got into the music industry (major labels) at 16, I'd always ask executives or anyone I could "What is networking and how do you do it?". It's a question that I was NEVER able to get the RIGHT answer to until I met a salesperson who had nothing to do with the music industry. I always thought networking was about having something to offer others, so because I was so young, I didn't think I could offer anything. I would lose so many relationships because I always thought, "why would they fuck with me, I got nothing to offer" and not keep in contact. BUT I WAS WRONG. Here's what she told me networking is, it's becoming a friend. It's about reaching out to folks, getting/giving advice, sending a complement, talking about sports, the industry, WHATEVER, it's about finding common ground to create relationships with people. Most dudes are afraid of rejection from guys they idolize, so I get it. But remember everyone is human and everyone has interests. If you know this person you want to know likes poker and you play poker, then use that as common ground, don't ask for your industry favors until you guys have built a relationship. But here's the killer, DON'T FORGET THAT YOU WANT TO DO BUSINESS WITH THIS PERSON. That means to control yourself and make sure they always see you as someone they believe can get the job done without embarrassing them. For example, you meet a music manager, you guys get cool, but he never sees you working, never hears any music from you, you're always late to everything and he only sees you drunk or high. Yeah, you got the relationship, but do you think he's going to respect you as a business colleague. No. People want to do business with people they like and respect and that's what networking is all about. Oh and don't get tripped up by the "everyone always wants something from me " talk anyone who thinks that way is immature and unrealistic about life (and they probably got a lot of people helping them as well). Yes, you can be a friend and don't take advantage of that (meaning don't fuck them over), but you gotta eat too and that's the way the world works. What's the point of knowing a bunch of people if you can't use that network to help you get where you want to go.

The first time I submitted something I got a management deal.

I hate forcing connections - networking with people you don’t like - or make you feel uncomfortable. Especially as a woman if the person I’m connecting with is a man (it almost comes with the territory) that he’ll flirt, try to make our discourse less professional more personal etc and I’m not complaining I’m just saying it’s nice when it’s a natural process but I guess you have to go through certain things in life to give you the skills to not take things to take things personal and to not let it affect the way you see human kind🤷🏽‍♀️ but networking is key or whatever clearly 🙄 cos it’s what has gotten me this far and what will get me further 🙏🏽

  • @RickRijuanaPro

Real shit about networking. I was writing songs and performing years ago. I would go to the show. Perform get a lot of love then hand out my songs I performed on CDs I pressed up. No conversation. Didn’t network with the other acts that I genuinely liked. Wasn’t on IG yet. I can’t be mad because I lacked the knowledge but getting out in the mix is real.

Sticking around regular people with no dreams, passion and willingness to make a change positively not only to their lives but being capable of imparting value into others lives will get you no where. This is so true and also people don't care to build relationships they just come to you when they need something but all along they don't even check up on people.

then get with the type of people that DO check up on yo and reach back when reached to

I didn't say I wasn't with people that check on me. Ya'll just like commenting to disagree. with people. You can still get people that want to exploit your friendship no matter how many good people you have around you.
