A lot of the searches actually are random in nature. They’ll search every 10th car or camper through the checkpoint. So it could just be your bad luck that you end up getting searched.

I liked Kelli texting me my picture from the traffic cameras. That seems "Big Bro" to me. The lane I was in, I could see he was sending more people to the side than any other lane. When you go to the side like that, just smile and wave, wrong place to take a stand. Fortunately, no rubber gloves. That would have made the evening news!

They didn't like that at all and detained me a couple hours researching my background. Canada doesn't like anything with a 600 foot per second velocity which this bb gun did have. The agent said it was a good thing I declared it or I'd have been behind bars. As it ended, I purchased an intransit import license and went on my way after 3 or 4 hours. The dog smashed my fresh bakery loaf of bread I was so looking forward to. Yeah it's personally invasive and you feel like you got mugged at gunpoint but it's the border patrol so I understand it's a job they need to do so I don't raise a stink and just let it get over with. Ar least they didn't tear anything apart like the guards at the crossing in north Montana glacier park to Waterton Lakes BC. That was in the 80s. I have gone back and forth through this crossing 5 times a year or so for more than 30 years. I was searched only once in that time, returning to Canada. The US border guards are brusque and unfriendly, almost rude. Their Canadian counterparts are a bit more civil, but just as thorough.
This guy was searched because he fits the profile of a traveller with guns. The incidence of gun owners trying to take undeclared weapons into Canada is much higher than it used to be, so border guards are more alert about cracking down on smugglers. The typical culprit is a male over 55, often from a Southern or other Red state. If the border guard has the least suspicion you have a gun in your car, expect to be searched.
Americans: WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T BRING GUNS INTO CANADA. IF YOU HAVE A GUN WITH YOU, FILL OUT THE PROPER FORMS AND DECLARE IT AT THE BORDER.
If not: You will probably be refused entry to Canada. You stand a good chance of losing your gun permanently, especially if it's a handgun. You will be prosecuted. You will be assessed a fine of up to $2000. You will be flagged for scrutiny at the border ever afterward.

The trouble is always going into Canada. Lately it's with the truck camper. Years ago I was crossing into Waterton Lakes, Prince of Wales Lodge for a honeymoon getaway of all things. the pricks tore the car apart looking for stuff. Had to put it back together myself. American guards are much nicer and don't act like they have a chip on their shoulder. Just my experience. The customs wanted to take me aside for a search coming back from Mazatlán. Fortunately the friend I was traveling with was an air shipper and knew a couple of the guards and got things straightened out quickly. Never been able to figure out why it always seems to be me. *You need to buy a toy gun and make a video where you declare that weapon. You can say you’re being extra cautious because once you found out you could’ve been arrested had you not declared a BB gun.*
You could make a video with the toy gun no matter what, but if you wanna make sure you’re taking “more seriously“ you could buy this fly/bug killing gun called the Bug-A-Salt. You put regular table salt in the gun, you caulk it, and then you shoot it at a fly in the house. It literally kills the fly because it shoots the salt out at such high pressure. So maybe the salt technically comes out of the gun it over 500 FT/SEC. The gun is only effective against flies at about 3 feet away from the fly, so it’s not like the salt flies across the room. But I don’t know, the salt may technically be traveling at 500ft/sec For the few feet that the salt actually travels. It’s kind of a cool gun do use against flies from what I understand. A lot of people post videos about it on TH-cam. The gun is kind of expensive at about $45. But if you don’t want to waste all that money then you could buy the gun on Amazon, go across the border, and then we turn the gun on Amazon for a full refund. And if you have Amazon prime then you don’t have to pay shipping either.
Just make sure you get it all on video. You’ll probably get at least 100,000 views. Lol.
