      I got sent to it because I answered affirmative to owning firearms. None were with me, though. The most interesting thing they found was some spent gum wrappers.

      That's happened to be on more than one occasion at that very same Queenston-Lewiston border crossing, as well as the Buffalo-Fort Erie crossing downriver to the south. Despite showing them all my proper IDs and passport, they would tell me to pull over to the side and one or two black-clad RCMP officers would search my entire car (even frisking me), causing some delay. But I was never booked, arrested, fined, or refused entry into Canada. I guess they would suspect a single guy driving for a weekend vacation road trip through southern Ontario slightly suspect.

      I used to cross the border daily as a truck driver. Never got sent to secondary as a trucker, whenever I traveled personally it was maybe 1/3 the time I got secondary inspection. I never got frisked although one time I was asked if I had a concealed pistol license in the US (I do) and then asked if I owned a gun then they asked me to remove my fleece jacket. Then they let me in.

    Canadian here who went to school in Buffalo. Crossed that border 50 times. Always found the Americans to be friendly. Coming back to Canada the guards were always a pain in the ass.

      Funny I have a great experience both U.S and Canada guards, super friendly I can't really say a single bad thing about crossing the border, and Canadians are super friendly, we love vacationing in Canada I can surely say the best vacations ever are in Canada

      I’ve found the CBSA to be thorough, but extremely polite and professional. Some of the CBP I’ve dealt with, particularly at Michigan-Ontario crossings, were insufferable.

      @@gigachud35 A few weeks ago on our way into Ontario the border agent greeted us with a very stern, "Hello!" It definitely wasn't a friendly hello, but I guess we should be thankful we got a greeting at all :)

    As someone who lives in a country that doesn't share a land border with any other country (Australia), I have always been interested in how countries that do share land borders mark out the border between them, and the way that people are allowed to cross the border.

      I live in Belgium, less than a kilometer from the border with The Netherlands. I drive through the netherlands to get to and back from work everyday and all we have as a border is just a sign saying 'Netherlands' & 'Belgium'

      The interesting thing about it in my experience was how stringent the American side is. As a US citizen with a passport and veteran ID, they grilled me coming back into the US, it felt like an interrogation. The Canadians were just like “don’t bring any guns or drugs bro welcome to Canada.”

    Wow, I always get hassled with questions both going up north and back south... I try to answer each question directly and to-the-point, but then get probing follow-on questions. So annoying, as if I'm being singled-out.

    I have been 4 times to Canada, 3 arriving by plane and 1 land crossing at the Buffalo, NY / Fort Erie, ON border. They gave me a hard every time I arrived at their international airports, repeating the same questions they had asked me before. They always let me in, but I chose not to go back anymore. I have been more than 30 times to Europe over the past 22 years, including the UK (which has a terrible reputation as well) and the Europeans have never been mean to me.

      They scan the barcode on your passport, and all your info comes up. Anything bad will be right at the top.

      @@KylePieri The rule is, first 5 years after conviction no entry. 5-10 years you need a pardon and after 10 years you should be able to cross.

      That's the Canadian side. You don't have to deal with the American side on the way back to Canada. For me, crossing back isn't bad at all. Crossing into the US is horrific. I wouldn't dare recording that, I'd probably end up in jail.

      This was at Queenston/Lewiston. Probably around noon on a weekday. That's the best time to cross. I know the borders well, and know what times to avoid.

    I'm going to canada this week, do they check you bags/luggage by hand or is it machine that checks it cause theres a machine that checks it in the airports, this is my first time crossing the border and I'm asking this because my backpack that I'mma bring it's very messy and it's gonna be so embarrassing if they check it by hand so if anyone knows pls tell me so I can clean out my backpack

      They only go through through your bags if you get sent for a secondary inspection. If so, they check it by hand.

      It really does. And that’s both ways. The American side is usually worse for me. I am a law abiding citizen, yet I get tremendous anxiety when I have to cross the border.

      Yes. Hand them your passport as soon as you drive up. If you wait for them to ask you for it, that’s strike one.

      That was one thing I found extremely odd but also miss. I was stationed in Germany and I drove to other countries and it’s like driving into another state in the US you just see a sign and that’s it your in a whole different country

      I don't know what the answer is. However, both the US and Canada have a jus solis system for nationality, which means birthright citizenship. If you're born on US soil, you're an American, or if you're born on Canadian soil, you're a Canadian, so I guess you'd be both. Most countries in the world do not have birthright citizenship, just wanted to add that.

      @@Andreas4696 there have been some interesting cases about people whose parents are Canadian citizens but they themselves were born in the US since the closest hospital was in the US.. basically some of them found out they weren't Canadian citizens (if they weren't registered), at least at first.. search "Lost Canadians" on Wikipedia..

      Anyone who is smart hands it to them as they drive up. They are a lot less testy if they don't have to ask you for it.

      . personally, I hand them my passport voluntarily before they even ask for it I'll say 85% of the time they won't even look at the passport. they'll ask you basic questions and ready to go

      Toronto is about an hour and a half away from the border, and you can cross at Fort Erie/Buffalo, Niagara Falls, or Queenston/Lewiston.

      Phenomena Washington you do, but if you’re smart you don’t wait for them to ask for it. You hand it to them as soon as you drive up. If they have to ask, that’s strike one against you.

      You don't need a passport to enter Canada. You just need one when you go back to the US. So unless you live in Canada, it is wise to have a passport on you otherwise you're kinda stuck there once you cross the border. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. This country is falling apart. Looking forward to moving to Canada when I finish college!

    What documentation do you need if you’re visiting a friend who lives in Canada ? I heard all you need is a Visa and a Passport. Is that true?

      What is your citizenship? Visas are not required for citizens of most developed states

      For US citizens and greencard holders (regardless of country), just bring your US passport or foreign passport w/matching US greencard

      @@AvtoWow Green card holders don't need a passport, just the green card (including for entry to Canada at the US land border). Otherwise correct.

    As a Asian American going to and coming back from Canada is way harder for a person of color. I was interrogated, detained, car searched, and treated a criminal by the US border patrol.

      If you don't have much to compare it to, you can't be sure it was based on race. I'm not saying that it can't be the reason, I'm just saying that it could be standard or maybe you were off to them idk. Places are different.

    Man you can cross the border in no time in Canada not like Mexico which is over a 3 hour wait period.

      It totally depends when you cross. It can get ridiculous. I make sure to pick off peak times to cross.

      Really? Try crossing without one! You need a passport, nexus card, permanent resident card or enhanced license to cross.

      They can make you pay the taxes. There is an allowable amount, after that they can make you pay.

      Duty and tariffs come in beyond a certain point. They don't care you brought the kids 3 I heart NY shirts, or you bring in a bottle of Genuine Canadian Maple Syrup, but if it is a few hundred dollars.... be ready to pay tariffs (tax) in most cases
