It is a long film - slow on purpose, it wants the viewer to soak in the feeling. BUT it is not for everyone. Won't be a commercial hit but will be one of those films that will influence other film makers.
f12mnb Agreed. Look at the influence the first Blade Runner had on anime, particularly Ghost in the Shell and Akira. Just those two films alone went on to influence a lot of good anime. I think the director said to himself "I am treading on hollowed ground here, I better not fuck this up!"
That was my problem with Blade Runner 2049. Not because I expected an action-packed movie full of one-liners and explosions, but because it felt like a movie made for the enjoyment of other film makers.
LOL What? Dace Batista DOES actually acts in ALL the movie that he's in, he's great in Guardians of the Galaxy as Draxx and he's fantastic in Dune as Beast Rabban. Dave Batista has ALWAYS been a fantastic actor ever since his wrestling days, what you're saying isn't true AT ALL about the guy as he ALWAYS "Actually acts in every movie that he's in.
I think you misread what I said and can understand how you could misintrepret it because I wrote it confusing. I meant, he acted well in this movie and should be given more opportunity to show his range.@@Gadget-Walkmen
@@RiceDaddy07 I understood what you said but I was just correcting you on things to say that he HAS acted brilliantly before as well. Not JUST in this movie.
it's a rip off when the sequel is not really a sequel, just in name and using a plot... to me the text in the beginning telling us about a whole new world is stupid and clearly a way to not have to invest as much time, effort and quality as was done in the REAL Blade Runner.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, photographed by Roger Deakins, scored by Hans Zimmer AND starring Ryan Gosling. How was this movie NOT gonna be an instant classic?!
1) My friend said he'd rather watch Fant4stic again over watching Blade Runner 2049 again 2) He got hit by a bus and into a building 3) I lost my bus license and got a fine for property damage
Azren Adli The funny thing is I'm being serious, my friend actually despised BR 2049. Myself and my other friend are still questioning why he'd rather watch Fant4stic (he hated that too) to this very day 😂
Franz Styles that’s what I was thinking. Also the Batman trilogy and watchmen are evidence cbm fans are wiser than u think. I also think Dennis would do exceptionally well with obscure dc characters who don’t have mainstream recognition. Red lanterns, karate kid, Martian man hunter, etc
DarthNawaf I took my dad to go see this and we agreed. We both left the theater and said, “You know what? ...I think this actually was even better than the original.” And I actually grew up on the original.
@@aidangillard2041 I think that's just on TH-cam. Ok, that is a lot of people already, and that reflect RT in some ways as well. But, I thought there might have been a lot more TH-cam reviewers that thought the original was still better by just a hair.
The Revenant and The Hateful Eight were each just as long as this movie, and The Wolf of Wall Street was even longer, and audiences liked them, so I don't think the length will put them off. More often, people get annoyed at really short movies because they feel they didn't get their moneys-worth.
If a movie is good enough (apart from me possibly needing a wee half way through) the length doesn't matter. I saw both those movies and they were as long as they needed to be, through the intermission in hateful eight was welcome to my traitor bladder.
I'm rewatching this review to say this: I'm still in high school, with the dream of becoming a film director one day. I'm working hard towards that, but it is all a process. I don't have a lot of money to go to the theater, and when I do I want to watch something good. I begged my dad to take me to the best theater in my country to watch Blade Runner 2049 for my birthday after watching this review. When the movie was starting up, I got nervous. What if it isn't amazing? What if I don't like it? What if it neither inspires me or fills me with the fear of never being able make something that lives up to it? What will thay say about me, both as a person and a film lover? Suffice to say, I loved every second of it. See, I've always had trouble defining what my favorite movie was. I could never place my finger on any which movie, and I've seen many a masterpiece. Every second of this movie evokes a feeling of awe and joy in the art of film making, something that no other film has done before for me. This movie both inspired and frightened me. I'm more deadset than ever to be a film maker, but at the same time I fear I'll never make something this good. All in all, I'd say Blade Runner 2049 is my favorite movie of all time.
I can relate to you, I'm in the same situation and I hope to do something as great as this... maybe not as great as Blade Runner, I may never come close to this, but I can dream :)
James Lewis .. man i'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina and i had the same feeling when the movie starts. Can we compair this one with the 82's masterpiece? It's going to be a matter of time too for this movie to be more aprecciated. And when i was back to my house from the IMAX i said to myself: There was a time when the little Denis Villeneuve dream, and all these years he work hard doing a lot of fantastic movies and then he is on the top. So, What i wanna say to you is never give Up, work hard to get closer to your dreams because you never know, maybe in a few years you're the director of the next Blade Runner film. Sorry for my english
To people saying this movie is overlong and slow, have you ever seen The Godfather? That movie is a masterpiece right? Well guess what. That movie has a runtime of 2 hours 58 minutes. Blade runner 2049 has a runtime of 2 hours 44 minutes. Godfather is considered a masterpiece by everyone including me. And now people are saying blade runner 2049 is bad because it's long and drawn out. It really tells you something about today's moviegoers doesn't it.
Vodka maybe so..but nonetheless it was slow pacing and it was a long film..there have been many films that needed to be long and paced slowly..for the viewers to get a full picture of the films theme and story.. shortening the film..picking up the pacing will sometimes leave out information that's important to the overall theme and story of the film..
@@excellenceinanimation960 indeed U need to watch the first one They don't call this a sequal for no reason The first and this hold together as one film Don't forget to watch the short films too
I have never sat through an almost 3 hour movie so entranced and in sheer awe at not only what I was watching visually, but also where the plot was going to take us next. There were absolutely no boring parts, because visually, the movie keeps you engaged. This is a masterpiece...just like it's original.
Christopher Garland It reminds me of the original Ghost in the Shell, long, 5-10 minute long panorama shots of the environment to help with the world building. Some may not like it, but I loved it
I'm liking the idea of some of these blockbusters essentially being art house movies. Not all blockbusters have to be like this but some of them can be to break up what sometimes feels like monotonous filmmaking. You get too much of a certain kind of blockbuster and it sucks the life out of you. But if they can make a movie like Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner every so often, I'd be really happy.
Julian Webb Wow...I wasn't interested in this movie AT ALL until reading your comment. Now, I am very interested to see for myself as to wether or not this is the case (I hope it is).
I just watched Blade Runner 2049. I left the theater with a pounding in my chest. The film is awesome and the score is breathtaking! That is how to make a movie. 5 stars!
I agree with you, so I guess we are in the minority together. Didn't care for it, actually didn't care for the score. Left feeling disappointed. The first had such an impact on me, but this one, not so much.
Same. I saw it again. Then it clicked. Same thing happened with the first movie. It really is a complex and sophisticated film. Takes a few watches to fully appreciate all the questions it raises and philosophical ideas.
Just got back from the cinema - so now I could watch the review. I agree on every single point. Amazeballs. And I'd like to add: For an old guy, who watched the original, in the cinema, back in 1982 (I was 13 then), this had a deeper added feeling, that I never expected. It felt like I was back. Back in a dark, depressing, bleak Los Angeles, that I had visited before. Because - just as in the original - the attention to detail was again so mind numbingly brilliant, and the scenes allowed to be so long - that I was once again pulled in. For some 2 hours and 43 minutes - I was there. In this dystopian mega city, where tacky neon signs of overblown proportions try to lure you in. I haven't had that feeling of being transported somewhere else, while watching a movie for a long long time. Not since 1982.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, I thought that this movie definitely changed me and it's comforting me through a very rough time in my life. I love this movie and I'm very thankful to be alive in this generation to see it.
Brance Nakmura I'd say you don't have to, but it drastically improves the experience. Plus you should watch the shorts (they're on youtube just search for blade runner 2049 short, there's 3 of them)
megamcee Totally agree bud. Insanely incredible visuals and sound but I think some people are gonna overlook the powerful dramatic heft the movie had with its characters.
I rarely call a movie beautiful. A movie can be good, amazing, exhilarating... but I reserve "beautiful" for other things, like love. But Blade Runner 2049 IS a beautiful movie, and there is no other way to say it.
Yes, both Arrival and Blade Runner are master-piece but Sicario & Prisoners are comparable to both his recent works. This director is in the league of his own.
He's definitely on the Mount Rushmore of great modern directors (as in, directors who started hitting it big this century) with Christopher Nolan and Edgar Wright.
Troughout the years I have noticed this movie growing on me. It was released when I was a 17 year old monkey, thinking avengers is the peak of cinema. This movie just lasts and lasts and ages like fine cognac. I think this will be the movie I want to watch last, before it all ends. Absolute masterpiece.
I actually liked _GitS_ (2017). It actually remained pretty faithful to Mamoru Oshii's original film visually and the stuff they added in, such as Major's backstory, I really enjoyed.
Anyone else think that all the posters for this movie look really weird? Like everyone's in some kind of cool sci-fi future outfit, and then there's Harrison ford who's just wearing a normal-ass shirt.
Blade Runner 2049 restored my faith in sequels. Agreed on the cinematography, and the music was also perfect. Sounded a lot like the original Blade Runner soundtrack and fit every scene in this movie beautifully. I, actually don't think any time I watch this movie from now, I'll be any less excited than when I first watched it.
Thank you for saying all the things that I thought (and probably more)! I hope that you'll be heard, and more films like this will be made in the future.
I only just watched this film. I hate most sequels to masterpieces so I didn't even pay attention when this came out, let alone read any reviews, as the original Bladerunner is one of my top 5 films of all time and I refuse to let anything dirty its name. Damn I wish I wouldn have paid attention when it was out in theaters. It's amazing even on my little laptop screen, definitely on par with the original.
I came out of the theatre blown away, it really makes me sad that it didn’t make a lot of money its opening weekend and I feel that the movie needed to be rewarded for how fucking amazing it was
Dj Jokerr? If your asking that question then you must have not seen the movie. Some amazing things in the movie are the visuals which are probably the greatest visuals in cinema history, the relationship between Joi and K which is probably the greatest and only romantic relationship in a movie that I cared about, the end fight scene had me on the edge of my seat, the dramatic plot twist that K isn't the child of deckard and Rachel, and also the entrance of Harrison Fords character and the amazing fight scene between him and k.
Dude always go to the movie first, then dinner if your going on a date. It gives you something to talk about during dinner, leaving less room for awkwardness. It also helps end the date off on a strong foot.

The key to not being bored of this movie. You have to be engaged. You have to want to go on this journey with the characters. It’s not about the destination it’s about the experience.
i try to never judge a person based on there taste in film. But if you thought this masterpiece was boring, then the problem lies with you and your not my kind of person
jordon cooper Not being your kind of person is fine i guess, but problem? Really? What does that even mean ? What fucking problem? (i liked the film btw, but your statment is as ridiculous as stating that earth is flat)
Seba Corsair interesting you say that, that's exactly what people said about 2001 (and was Clark and Kubrick's exact intent.) And guess who Villeneuve's favorite director is...
To bad she (Blade Runner 2049) wont live (bombed at the box office) but then again who does (Blade Runner 1982 also bombed at the box office). I loved both. Transformers 1-59 makes money at the box office what would you rather see?
John Berry this movie is not for you. Not everyone is born with the same mental capacity. There are many good movies that are shorter, easier to follow, and require a much lower attention span.
Hmm you're not wrong its one of mu favorite movies of all time, definitely one of the best 2010 movies not sure about the absolute best because there were a lot of classics that came out last decade but its for sure on the list and top 10, I'd have to rewatch a lot of those 2010 greats to make up my mind like Fury Road, Inception, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Revenant, Edge Of Tomorrow, Django, Infinity War, Gaurdians of The Galaxy, Perks of being a wallflower ect.
Inception was the best movie of the 2010s legit I did a poll on reddit and almost everyone picked inception and it’s the highest rated movie on imdb that came out in the 2010s
Blade runner 2049 is my favorite movie of all time and I said that immediately after the green eye intro scene, and not seeing it in cinema until this day is my most stupid decision in my life ... imagine the goosebumps that I had watching it at home but in theater... not watching it in cinema made me depressed more than my ex leaving me lol
richard Lai can’t really compare blade runner to Star Wars they both have different mediums in filmmaking and tackle the science fiction/fantasy elements in different ways
One of the best I have seen, and I’m no spring chicken, crossing all genres including landmarks like Ben Hur (1959), Titanic, Casablanca, 2001, Inherit the Wind (not Gone with), Amadeus, Saving Private Ryan - the list is not long. Blade Runner 2049, for the mature of all ages, is immersive, moving and stunning both visually and aurally and indeed it stands on its own, albeit the impetus for me was the original Blade Runner, making it the perfect sequel - as well. Purchased the movie in 3d to match my theatre viewing experience...and on my fifth home viewing....still incredible! The speculative, marketing inspired demise of 3d in North America is undoubtedly and assuredly premature. 3d format or otherwise the movie remains a masterpiece. It should be the Oscar pick for best movie of 2017, and the cast including Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas and others nominated in respective roles. Consummate actors all, not to mention Denis Villeneuve as Best Director. Thank Ridley Scott for recognizing his genius. The reality is that Science Fiction, even as a statement on the human condition, has never won an Oscar for Best Movie, as far as I know. The Academy Awards will likely miss this, caught up in the social media swamp and the cause of the day. The Academy will likely instead vote for an odd duck or more common place take on the triumphs and tribulations of the human condition, all destined to become mediocrities and also rans for 2017. This in turn, as it continues to demonstrate, makes Oscar night nothing more than a gossips’ social gathering and more redundant and meaningless than ever in what it’s function should be - rewarding real achievement in film. Meanwhile like the first Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 will continue to attract an ever growing following and challenge current and future movie makers to raise the bar on what is now possible.
Blade runner 2049 the best sci-fi movie? You need to watch some more sci-fi, br2049 is a masterpiece but the best of all time?no its not even the best sci-fi of the century so far the best sci-fi movies from 2000-2019 are Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind,Children Of Men,Her and Inception and the best Sci-fi movie ever is 2001: A Space Odyssey.
@@dogandsquirrelslol8966 I stand by my rating and review of BR 2049. 2001 A Space Odyssey, also a masterpiece and a Kubrick production, captured the pre-milenium period of space exploration and marveled at the technology of the time then coupled this with exploration of the unknown and under the impetus of a potential prime mover of sorts. 2049 captured not only a futuristic period, but an in depth look at the human condition in an apocalyptic world, and what remains the essence of the quintessential aspect of human existence, if necessarily and by contrast demonstrated by those who aren’t human at all.
@@brianmitchell4820 I never said blade runner 2049 was bad i do consider it a masterpiece but im just saying perhaps you should check out some other masterpieces in the sci-fi genre because br2049 is a recent movie and there are some gems in that genre,(by recent i meant that since br2049 is a recent sci-fi gem some might consider it the best because its new and have possibly not seen some other sci-fi stuff so that's why that's what I thought so i just said that maybe you should check out some more sci-fi)
When I first learn about the runtime for this film, I was like "Seriously, 160 minutes?". After watching it though, I realize that this movie will not work if they shorten the run time or hasten the plot.
David Mailand short films can be good. If you have to take longer to tell the story because it's content heavy, fine. This is not one of those situations.
This is one of those VERY rare movies that I pretty much refuse to watch on a small screen. It was such an amazing and overwhelming cinematic experience (I saw it three times), that I only want to see it again in a theater, with a huge screen, and big sound. Amazing.
I loved it beyond words. Agent K's final moments reminded me so much of Rutger Hauer's speech on the roof; except there was no need to say a word. It was powerful. When Deckard asked him "What am I to you?" and K only smiled sadly, I was choked up. Tears in the rain...or in the snow.
Dune is arguably the greatest sci fi novel of all time, and Frank Herbert was the first major sci fi author to address themes of ecology in his speculative fiction. It takes a while to get used to the way he employs language, and some of the literary conceits he uses - such as the internal character monologues - are a shade dated when viewed with modern eyes, but Dune is still undeniably a masterwork with few if any peers in the genre. The books written by Frank Herbert are widely regarded as the best novels in the continuity, with the later ghostwritten books not typically being held in such high esteem, but if you are going to dip a toe into the universe of Dune do yourself a favour and be sure to read Dune, Dune; Messiah, Children and Dune and God Emperor of Dune at the least. It will take time and the preparedness to let the story unfold at the pace the author intended, but you won't regret it.
Just saw the film and have to agree. The best thing I can say is that I want to see it again, I want the visuals and sounds to wash over me again as I catch things I missed on first viewing. This is the 19th film I've seen in theatres this year and it's the best one I've watched. I'll be shocked (and spoiled) if I see something better.
Rolf Harris To each their own my friend. I do pretty well at parties though. The trick is to not be a curmudgeon who slings ad hominem at complete strangers for no real reason.
sacflies I can acknowledge that the plot and themes are familiar. However, I don't really see that as a negative. Most films retread some plot or themes, it's kind of a moot argument to begin with. For example, 'Star Wars' is just another retelling of the hero's journey. However, I think most people could agree that 'Star Wars' rose above other like films through it's creative universe, effects, film making etc... I feel similarly towards 'Bladerunner 2049'. Yes we've seen these themes before, but it was executed spectacularly. The cinematography is gorgeous. I can recall several times where I noted how well shots were blocked and framed. I also feel that they did an excellent job with the familiar plot and themes. I thought Gosling's arc was well done and the film had a very satisfying ending. Do I expect everyone to love this film? Obviously not, I put that expectation on no film. People's enjoyment of a film is purely subjective and art would be boring if we all enjoyed the same stuff. However, there is quality film making here and that's what I really appreciate. To be honest, my next favourite film of the year is probably John Wick: Chapter 2. Another slickly made film that retreads familiar plot and themes, but manages to rise above them through excellent film making.
The great filmmakers of our time are: Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Alejandro González Iñárritu, David Fincher, Alfonso Cuarón, Edgar Wright, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese (yes he's old, but he is still making great films today), and Damien Chazelle.
Tarantino is too old I think what he meant was most akin to Modern Masters. Or Masters For Millennials seeing as how Tarantino is Gen X. Saying where are our masters and then pointing out Tarantino would be like saying oh hey Hitchcock is a modern master, he's doing the Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV show.
Had a couple of dumb teenagers that thought it was going to be an action movie in the cinema... They left after 15 minutes. Some fat lady next to me fell asleap as well. Anyway, MY GOD WHAT AN AMAZING MOVIE
They don't make many films like this one anymore. It took it's time establishing it's athmosphere rather than smashing cgi-monsters against each other.
This is storytelling as it was in the 70’s with epics like The Godfather, it will reward with multiple viewings, the pace isn’t a retina scorching flurry of rapid cuts, but slowly unfolds without being spoon fed. Awesome
+Mr. Stkrdknmilbalz No, clearly the biggest mistake that ruined this movie was hiring Brett Ratner to direct lol...Seriously, somebody made that joke...
+Gaming Wookie By the way I don't think the script is bad, I loved the movie, I just remember the visual storytelling taking a bigger part than the dialogue. I guess that's part of the script, too, so...amazing script?
probably more shaky cam and virtually no panning landscape shots at all. also, the whole film's run-time would probably be cut in half since Michael Bay's films are so rapidly paced, which would kind of take away from the film.
My god my theatre dissapointed, there wasn't a single poster, they played it on the smallest fucking screen and to top it all off I was the only one there! I beg you, if you love sci-fi, film, brilliant cinematography then SEE IT, it isn't a film it's an event. This is the new T2: Judgement Day all it needs is the audience so please do yourself a favour and watch Blade Runner 2049!
This movie was absolutely haunting, beautiful and rather sad. The sound design and music was exceptional. I can't get over it. It's now my favorite film of all time. Which I never had before
I know it's kinda early to say it, but screw it: It's way better than the original: The detective work and the mystery is ten times more sophisticated and well thought out that in Blade Runner, the cinematography, while the old one had the benefit of being in the 80s and there has been nothing done like that before, is style a bit better in this one, the music is HAUNTINGLY beautiful. It's a sensual feast for 2 hours 42 minutes. If you love cinema, this is the movie for you.
Thorsten Benecke Respectfully disagree. There's things that are done better in 2049 like the love story and K being more likeable than 2019 Deckard, but I still prefer 2019. Equally great cinematography and production design, better pacing etc. I love the new characters like K and Luv, but in 2049 I still missed Roy, Rachel, Pris etc. Still, the fact that 2049 lives up to 2019, and for some even surpasses it is still a miracle!!
They are just different but good at the same level, that's why both got an A+ and no one is complaining about it. The first one has a different style as he said, things were less obvious for the viewer and it showed basically no reminders, so the we needed to be more deductive to understand it. On the other hand, the second one did more for storytelling and the cinematography was just delightful, it really makes you feel in the future, and it was less corny, in the end it's just more modern.
Man, so fucking excited for Blade Runner 2049, the first one still is one of my favorite films of all-time, and Denis Villeneuve just can't make a bad movie. Similar to Christopher Nolan, even his worst movie is still REALLY good. All these new upcoming masters like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Damien Chazelle, Alejandro G. Inarritu, Edgar Wright etc. I can't WAIT for what comes next!
Water Hazard everyone else you named is a master. Nolan is a perfect example of overrated mediocrity. He's pandering pseudo intellectual mediocrity. Pure and simple.
Funny all these Nolan haters just blurt out bullshit like "pseudo-intellectual" and "overrated" but never fully explain in detail why they don't like him lol. They just parrot the same crap that internet haters have said in order to start arguments online. Further proof that people who don't like him are idiots who can't think for themselves.
Phil Michaels well he likes to make films that feel smarter and better then a casual film. But they have plotholes and logical problems so often they dont work for everybody (dark knight, knight rises, interstellar). But sometimes everything works out and you get big budget well made films like inception or even smaller budget yet intriguing like memento
interesting fact : Niander Wallace, Jared Leto's character, was supposed to be played by David Bowie who unfortunately died before the making of the movie began
@@andrew1983 I think the reason is cause the character was supposed to be an older person, which is why Villeneuve wanted Bowie originally. Leto looks and sounds too young for this role. If Villeneuve really wanted to find the best person to replace Bowie I think someone like Johnny Depp would've been a better fit.
Calling it now, Blade Runner 2049 is going to be The Dark Knight of the 2010s. That's how fucking good it is Edit: Not saying TDK is the best movie of that decade, but it's one of the most iconic and most discussed. 2049 is headed down that same road, guaranteed Another edit: You people are fucking horrendous at reading.
I saw it in the theater and thought is was just ok. Rewatched it on video and I am really starting to fall in love with the movie. Sometimes with movies your first impressions aren't always good ones.
Imaad Shahrukh slow pacing..and the movie being long..doesn't make the film bad..like I said before.. sometimes films need to be long..it becomes important to the overall theme of the film.. shortening the film faster pacing..could effect the overall story and theme of the film..when someone writes a story..it has a beginning, a middle, and a ending.. sometimes when putting it on the big screen..that story may have to be paced slowly..and it may need to be long..to get the full impact of the story as it was written..
It's criminal that this film did so badly in the box office. Very suprising how much it lost the studio. One of those films where I tell myself, thank god I'm alive to see a masterpiece like this! When a film like this and edge of tomorrow does so badly, we get robbed of some great sci fi movies as no studios will touch them.
This film reminded me of Interstellar where I saw so much ambition and care put into what was an epic film and yet people are disappointed. I know it's subjective and if we all liked the same ish the world would be boring, but I truly just can't grasp the idea of not liking these films or at least appreciating them.
To be fair, this is a much better movie than Interstellar. Nolan clearly put a lot of thought into Interstellar, but the ending just didn't work, and I think just couldn't work. A weird combination of time-travel and pseudo-science to get the 'happy ending' the movie wasn't building to isn't good story-telling; it's having a cool idea for some shots and throwing something together to string them together. I enjoyed it well enough, but I can't watch the last half-hour of that movie. BR2049, on the other hand, is just incredible all the way through. The art direction, the sound design (excepting too much Zimmer-bass at a few moments), the thematic and narrative focus, all just work. It's not breaking new philosophical ground, but it's executing those thoughts beyond all expectations.
Am i the only one that thinks this movies, had useless plots all over it, and a world with a thousand holes that make no sense? It was a 3 hour mess for me.
2010 - Incendes 2013 - Prisoners 2014 - Enemy 2015 - Sicario 2016 - Arrival 2017 - Blade Runner 2049 Can we all agree this man is one of the all time greats??
Chris, I want to just take a second to thank you for pouring your heart and soul into these videos. I watch all of them. Your passion is contagious. Your love of movies mirrors my love of photography, and your excitement about the craft is amazing. You tell a great story in your videos. Please please please keep making more.
My dad would always play Sci-fi movies like Aliens, The Fifth Element, and The chronicles of Riddick. Those were his movies... those were the movies that were always on with him and I would sit and watch them with him and I would love them. I can say THIS, Bladerunner 2049 is MY Sci-fi movie that will always be on when my son gets older.
´s a shame that the two Blade Runners fails in box office. The people of today don´t recognize a true work of art, but buy tickets to watch Transformers, Twilight,50 shades of grey and fast and furious. This brainless American cinema is destroying great films like Blade Runner 2049. Most people nowadays look for action instead of plot.... Shame really.
If you think about it. We should be glad it flopped. Can you imagine if they did a big blade runner franchise that ends up being run into the ground like other movies? Sure it sucked that it flopped, but remember, the movie (blade runner) started great and ended great (2049)
@@Razgriz_01 Yes thank god. A masterpiece that managed to avoid being turned into an ever cheapening franchise. Both the original and BR2049 are iconic.
1:02 OMG I had a sigh of relief when you said that! I'm sooo looking forward to seeing this film that I was waiting to hear your review on it. Okay now I'm ready.
I was really relieved too... because, and I am sorry about this, but I utterly hated watching the original. I disliked it so mucht that I was really scared this one was going to plunge down the same pitfalls. I am really glad this one is good.
i started liking movies a hell of a lot more and in a serious way over the last few years, and it's because of how truly amazing it is to transport someone into a world be it realistic or deliberately out the box, and after watching this movie, i thought to myself, i generally want to go out and make movies for a living
Chris I agree with you to the fullest extent. This movie was in my opinion a masterpiece. It'll divide people for sure and that's ok but I can truly see this being a classic years from now and considered one of the best.
Had to go back to this review because I rewatched Blade runner 2049 the other day for the second time. It just gets better with every viewing. The sound in is out of this world. The images composed are insane. This is a movie I will come back to time and time again because this is how you do a sequel right. Just amazing
Timothy Fleming It's also scary. Because all godly directors end their winning streaks eventually and lose their groove. I'm worried we are seeing the best of him now, and quality only goes down moving forward.
+Chris Stuckmann This was the most intriguing ending I've ever seen in a movie theater: Absolute silence of people, sitting introspective, without any comment, digesting the emotional load of what they just watched ... After that, everyone left in silence, perplexed ... Truly impressive.
Subscribe to this channel for literally no reason But he’s discovered the humanity within himself. The whole movie is about AI wishing/wanting to be human. The relationships he’s formed have made him more human.
I share the same opinion with you man...I'm a 14 year old kid and I want to become a screenwriter or a director, since I know of myself I've loved movies and I think that I'm gonna start writing a screenplay for a movie and one day...one day I hope it's gonna be made into a great movie...follow your dreams. "Too bad she won't live...but then again who does?"
It's a cycle. People got tired of "movies" back in the 60's, and watched European "films" instead. Then Bonnie and Clyde happened. And now, people got tired of "films", and want "movies" again.
I just finished this movie tonight. Its so crazy because the topics and themes of this movie relate to 2023 WAAAAY more than it did in 2017... Its almost as if it's predicting the future. I cant wait to fully watch it again. This time I'd like to be fully concentrated on it because the first time i watched it i only did so during my 30 minute dinner sessions and i had to watch it over the course of 3-4 days
And blood-black nothingness began to spin A system of cells interlinked within Cells interlinked within cells interlinked Within one stem. And dreadfully distinct Against the dark, a tall white fountain played.
OMFG! Chris predicted it. My mate said it was a long, boring, convoluted film and it should have been simpler. I knew he was crazy, cause my mind was blown at how good it was.
Blade runner 2049 is without a doubt in my top 5 films ever. I've never seen so much beauty on screen than when I watched this in the cinema for the first time, everything about it is so captivating. Especially the score! My god I've listened to that score on repeat since the moment I came out of the cinema. This movie will always hold a very special place in my heart.
I love how the movie managed to do this without adding a scene where someone spends 5 minutes eating a pie.
That was my problem with Blade Runner 2049. Not because I expected an action-packed movie full of one-liners and explosions, but because it felt like a movie made for the enjoyment of other film makers.
>calls it a long film
>doesn't know about the 4 hour cut
the first one was better, Tron 2 was better then this one.
Dave Batista was really good in this movie. He should be given more roles where he actually acts.
He should!!
You asked, the master delivered.
This movie's sound design is orgasmic.
it's totally based on the original and in that regard a total rip off
wouldn't really call it a rip-off, just heavily inspired (it is a sequel after all).
frederik cassiers it’s literally a fucking sequel. Explain to me how a sequel can rip off the film that it’s following.
it's a rip off when the sequel is not really a sequel, just in name and using a plot... to me the text in the beginning telling us about a whole new world is stupid and clearly a way to not have to invest as much time, effort and quality as was done in the REAL Blade Runner.
Wojciech Olczyk I took them as an attemp to make the movie feel more grandeur as well as to not copy the first movie completely
Thank God it won cinematography Oscar for Roger deakins. But it deserved award for best film and director. Denis villnevue is such a great director.
Ravi Tolani Cinematography cannot make up an entire movie. This movie is too slow paced and uneventful. Over-rated if you ask me.
Ravi Tolani Guillermo for shape of water won...what a joke lol. In fact, I think Dunkirk should have won it!

I watched it and didn’t know what the fuck was going on. It was actual garbage but it looked really cool.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, photographed by Roger Deakins, scored by Hans Zimmer AND starring Ryan Gosling. How was this movie NOT gonna be an instant classic?!

Seriously who wants to watch the raping of the Fantastic Four over this masterpiece I don't get it
Both movies horrible. rather watch original blade runner a million times.
If 2049 was this good, imagine what his version of Dune is gonna be like. Jesus christ.
Based on this and Arrival I say it'll be a masterpiece the likes of which we haven't seen. I can't wait
Cant wait.. Denis villenuve best director out at the minute
@Franz Styles There's so many big named actors in it that people won't ignore it
BillOFailey I wish Warner would hire Dennis as the head of DC
Franz Styles that’s what I was thinking. Also the Batman trilogy and watchmen are evidence cbm fans are wiser than u think. I also think Dennis would do exceptionally well with obscure dc characters who don’t have mainstream recognition. Red lanterns, karate kid, Martian man hunter, etc
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I prefer this movie way more than the first one. And also Harrison Ford’s performance in this movie was amazing.
DarthNawaf I took my dad to go see this and we agreed. We both left the theater and said, “You know what? ...I think this actually was even better than the original.” And I actually grew up on the original.
I agree
I don't think it's an unpopular opinion. Most reviewers I've watched have expressed the same sentiment
Me too.
0Axel0 Audiences care if it's good regardless of length
Which is why I am hoping for a 3hr + Avengers Infinity War. Hell, give me a 4 hour extended cut Blu-ray ala Return of the King.
If a movie is good enough (apart from me possibly needing a wee half way through) the length doesn't matter. I saw both those movies and they were as long as they needed to be, through the intermission in hateful eight was welcome to my traitor bladder.
0Axel0 Titanic....Gone with the wind...etc
I personally don't think Titanic is a good example unless it's a movie as a cure to insomnia but that's just me :-)
I'm rewatching this review to say this:
I'm still in high school, with the dream of becoming a film director one day.
James Lewis You just exactly echoed my sentiments, man! I'm dreaming of becoming a big filmmaker too!
James Lewis so true young brother, i am 50 and have watched a hell of allot of films, i just put this as my number one
It's amazing to hear that a passion for the Arts is still prevalent in the younger generations. Kids like you give me hope!
It really tells you something about today's moviegoers doesn't it.
transformers and tyler perry movies have destroyed their brains
This movie has nothing on the greatness of The Godfather don’t put those two movies in the same sentence blade runner 2049 was boring
Kyle Thompson godfather can get boring at times. Bunch of talking and talking and talking
The godfather actually had interesting characters and dialogue.
Sh*t, I know I'm 3 years late, but what a heck of a film. It pisses me off that it didn't make money. We need more of this...

I was sold the moment I heard this was basically a 200 million dollar art house film
Except the original film didn't tried to be like that, if I'm not mistaken, much less to be a blockbuster.
Just like Neon Demon

I just watched Blade Runner 2049. I left the theater with a pounding in my chest. The film is awesome and the score is breathtaking! That is how to make a movie. 5 stars!
Chris Odukwe Im seeing it tomorrow. Such a breath of fresh air to know its so good.
Apparently I'm in the minority, but I found it to be one of the worse movies I've seen in awhile
I agree with you, so I guess we are in the minority together. Didn't care for it, actually didn't care for the score. Left feeling disappointed. The first had such an impact on me, but this one, not so much.
The movie was weak. 2 1/2 Stars
Same. I saw it again. Then it clicked.
Same thing happened with the first movie. It really is a complex and sophisticated film. Takes a few watches to fully appreciate all the questions it raises and philosophical ideas.
Just got back from the cinema - so now I could watch the review. I agree on every single point. Amazeballs.
And I'd like to add:
For an old guy, who watched the original, in the cinema, back in 1982 (I was 13 then), this had a deeper added feeling, that I never expected.
Ditto and I was 12 back then. I am relieved and then in awe. What a movie!
Just watched the movie. For me it's a new classic. Amazing movie.

Denis villeneuve is such an amazing director makes serious movies for once that are just masterpieces. One of the best today
Absolutely, I wasn’t to sure of him originally but after two back to back masterpieces with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 he’s definitely a new great
Yes, both Arrival and Blade Runner are master-piece but Sicario & Prisoners are comparable to both his recent works. This director is in the league of his own.
He's definitely on the Mount Rushmore of great modern directors (as in, directors who started hitting it big this century) with Christopher Nolan and Edgar Wright.
I can't wait to see his version of Dune.
No, he makes movies that SEEM like masterpieces (slow, overlong, pretty, pretentious). Not the same. One of the worst.
And the mystery of Chris' thumbnail expressions continues.
Adam Moynihan I swear he just pick the at random out of a folder named "thumbnail faces".
He sometimes uses the same faces in some of his thumbnails.
Kung Fu: The Legend Continues
he jizzed, is that really a mystery?
Adam Moynihan probably that’s going to be my face looking at the movie during the runtime

Inception was the best movie of the 2010s legit I did a poll on reddit and almost everyone picked inception and it’s the highest rated movie on imdb that came out in the 2010s

Star Wars was never that good lol
apt comparison..
richard Lai can’t really compare blade runner to Star Wars they both have different mediums in filmmaking and tackle the science fiction/fantasy elements in different ways
many of the old star trek TV episodes were better than the last Jedi. BR2 is pretty good, but it is a lot to take in.
One of the best films I have ever seen.

@@dogandsquirrelslol8966
I stand by my rating and review of BR 2049. 2001 A Space Odyssey, also a masterpiece and a Kubrick production, captured the pre-milenium period of space exploration and marveled at the technology of the time then coupled this with exploration of the unknown and under the impetus of a potential prime mover of sorts.
It could be shortened if ryan gosling walked faster and stopped staring at everything
Izzat Aziz the best films must be long and epic
Jay Seps or if they didn’t bloody have five establishing shots for a scene, dragging a two-minute scene into ten minutes. 😑
There is a lot of fluff in this film. It could probably be an hour shorter without missing any story.
David Mailand short films can be good. If you have to take longer to tell the story because it's content heavy, fine. This is not one of those situations.
He is ready. We need Dune.
Absofuckinlutely
HOLY FUCK PLEASE DO IT
Megan Fortune
Fucking totally. His initiation is complete, and he has proven himself a worthy successor. If anyone should revive it, it's him.
Hell. Yeah.
Wow. Do you really reckon he could pull it off?
This makes me stoked for "Dune" 2020.
This is one of those VERY rare movies that I pretty much refuse to watch on a small screen. It was such an amazing and overwhelming cinematic experience (I saw it three times), that I only want to see it again in a theater, with a huge screen, and big sound. Amazing.
Just watched it, pissed I didn’t see it in 2017 but wasn’t a movie buff back then.
The reprise of the soundtrack used during Roy's final moments got me to choke up.
@Aerociviz Nicholas He did
Well said.
Thanks asshole
Damn, that was poetic.
Villeneuve = Genius
Btw is there anybody who's just read Dune? I started it but the weird names are turning me off. Do you consider it worth reading in full?
Soufian 27 he's a good director and a hero of mine
Totally
Too bad that Arrival is piece of s**t
Just saw the film and have to agree. The best thing I can say is that I want to see it again, I want the visuals and sounds to wash over me again as I catch things I missed on first viewing.
This is the 19th film I've seen in theatres this year and it's the best one I've watched. I'll be shocked (and spoiled) if I see something better.
Rolf Harris
To each their own my friend.
I do pretty well at parties though. The trick is to not be a curmudgeon who slings ad hominem at complete strangers for no real reason.
But the story sucked.
TehZergRush I completely agree
sacflies
I can acknowledge that the plot and themes are familiar.
10/10
This is and will always be the most beautiful movie on this planet
Glad to see Dave Batista getting good roles
him and jared leto are why I can't take this film seriously
ArnoldTohtFan how? Jared looks great in this movie
The Source Hey, he had one bad role in Suicide Squad, don't you know that means he's shit from now on?
ArnoldTohtFan
loser bitch
Better than you let a man have his own opinion, jeez.
Crichjo32 a lot of people would also put Refn on that list but he's a little too polarizing to be considered one of the greats
Yes I love everything about this. I would also add Paul Thomas Anderson, The Coen Bros, and Wes Anderson
I'd also add Tom Ford to that list.
I'm glad that you added Edgar wright
Had a couple of dumb teenagers that thought it was going to be an action movie in the cinema... They left after 15 minutes. Some fat lady next to me fell asleap as well. Anyway, MY GOD WHAT AN AMAZING MOVIE
They don't make many films like this one anymore. It took it's time establishing it's athmosphere rather than smashing cgi-monsters against each other.
I thought it was going to be an action movie too, but i still enjoy it :) it was really good
Eww fat ppl are always falling asleep
It's neo-noir. And I love noir films so these two movies are my favourite movies of all time.
Llama Bucket Bomber
I recommend Collateral if you like noir. (you have probably seen it already)
I love this movie so much that I just sometimes watch this review to be happy
That's the way to see Chris' reviews. Find something you adore, and watch the hell out of the reviews :)
That is a beautiful comment. I know just how you feel.
This is storytelling as it was in the 70’s with epics like The Godfather, it will reward with multiple viewings, the pace isn’t a retina scorching flurry of rapid cuts, but slowly unfolds without being spoon fed. Awesome
Should have been directed by Michael Bay.
Just fucking with you, this movie was great, as a Blade Runner fan and a movie fan. 10/10 for me.
+Mr. Stkrdknmilbalz No, clearly the biggest mistake that ruined this movie was hiring Brett Ratner to direct lol...Seriously, somebody made that joke...
Mr. Stkrdknmibalz It would actually be interesting to see what Michael Bay could do with such an amazing script like Blade Runner 2049's.
+Gaming Wookie As amazing as...the script was (?)...I think it would just be interesting to see how he does it in general...
Owen B. Don't even compare classic movie like T2 to this trash.
DjJokerr Why can't you just appreciate movies instead of comparing them. They are both masterpieces in their own way.
DjJokerr yeaaaaah no this movie blows Terminator up to the sun.
DjJokerr he's a troll nvm
DjJokerr not everyone thinks this is "trash" like you. Deal with it
This movie was absolutely haunting, beautiful and rather sad. The sound design and music was exceptional. I can't get over it. It's now my favorite film of all time. Which I never had before
So Chris, where's your reviews for the other 2047 movies in the Blade Runner franchise?
Water Hazard hahahahaha you legend!
Wow that was a totally original and funny joke.
joke is about as original as trump wall jokes
Yellow daimond destroyed them all! It's part of the new order carried out by Agent Peridot.
Water Hazard I don't get it ?
Smithy Chris then why everyone copied him?
Water Hazard Ryan coogler and ava duevernay too
interesting fact : Niander Wallace, Jared Leto's character, was supposed to be played by David Bowie who unfortunately died before the making of the movie began
Interesting
I would've preferred that tbh.
That's how fucking good it is
Edit: Not saying TDK is the best movie of that decade, but it's one of the most iconic and most discussed. 2049 is headed down that same road, guaranteed
Another edit: You people are fucking horrendous at reading.
I feel like Mad Max: Fury Road already caught up and overrode that comparison way back in 2015. But this new BR2049 film is still good, no doubt.
Nico Lord Yeah they're like equal footing in the brilliance department
Breaking Banter lmao u haven't seen it yet dumbfuck
LivingOnAudio Walked it of it almost 3 hours ago 👍
What about Logan?
I saw it in the theater and thought is was just ok. Rewatched it on video and I am really starting to fall in love with the movie. Sometimes with movies your first impressions aren't always good ones.
how tho...u were drank
The fact this movie is bombing in the box office is an absolute travesty. This film is a goddamn masterpiece.
E Magid fuck an a buddy, its a masterpiece
Because people would rather see fast and furious or transformers part 30
E Magid The reason it bombed was because of its slow pacing and long runtime.
Akim Smith Slow pacing works better with likable characters who show emotion, not boring Mary Sues.
A movie review I can absolutely agree with Chris Stuckmann on.
Interstellar sucks. BR 2049 is overrated, but it still is a good movie.
"all liked the same ish the world would be boring"
I think you mean unrealistic.
Am i the only one that thinks this movies, had useless plots all over it, and a world with a thousand holes that make no sense? It was a 3 hour mess for me.
I wouldn't say Interstellar had a "happy ending"... A father watching his daughter die of old age, yeah very happy ending...
This movie is a future classic masterpiece of sci fi cinema. I think in the future it will be appreciated more.
A cinematic masterpiece. Nuff said.
2010 - Incendes
2013 - Prisoners
2014 - Enemy
2015 - Sicario
2016 - Arrival
2017 - Blade Runner 2049
Can we all agree this man is one of the all time greats??
I've seen everything except Incendies . Yup dude, Genius detected
High quality film making, and that is an impressive filmography for such a sort period of time
this was one of chris's most positive rviews ever. man... I needed this.
Sad to see it bomb at the box office.
Not enough fart jokes for the modern audience
The difference is that this one actually sucked.
General audiences are going to hate this film. Which is exactly why I love it. It's mindfuckingly gorgeous, especially on Imax.
Severian Wintermute how is it mindfucking? It’s a pretty straight forward movie
Put on your spectacles and read what I wrote again.
Severian Wintermute you love this film cause other people are going to hate it
Wow... You're right! Why didn't I think about imax? This has to be amazing... It makes me want to see it again in imax.
Looks good but the story was very mediocre.
people who say this movie is boring, maybe they watched it in 144p resolution :)
I think one of the greatest mistakes of my life was NOT watching it in a movie theater ._.
The real classics are the ones that divide people. +A indeed.
Had to go back to this review because I rewatched Blade runner 2049 the other day for the second time. It just gets better with every viewing. The sound in is out of this world. The images composed are insane. This is a movie I will come back to time and time again because this is how you do a sequel right. Just amazing
I just re watched this for the second time and liked it even more this time. The overall story and message with these movies are amazing
Chris, you're the only movie critic I follow who pronounces Villeneuve correctly. Thank you
Guy from Québec here...he learn to do it and it's respectful...Love it !
Ji-pi Doyon and as a Frenchman I can only love it too
What I find so amazing is that he has made 3 consistently great movies in the last 3-4 years. I can’t wait to see what else he has to offer.
Timothy Fleming
It's also scary. Because all godly directors end their winning streaks eventually and lose their groove. I'm worried we are seeing the best of him now, and quality only goes down moving forward.
Timothy Fleming prisoners, sicario, arrival, now Blade Runner 2049
This movie is so impressive. Such a gorgeous masterpiece. Every time that I revisit I still shocked about the quality.
+Chris Stuckmann This was the most intriguing ending I've ever seen in a movie theater: Absolute silence of people, sitting introspective, without any comment, digesting the emotional load of what they just watched ... After that, everyone left in silence, perplexed ... Truly impressive.
It's really not that complicated or profound. It's decent.
What's intriguing about it though? Harry meets his daughter and Ryan prolly does
Subscribe to this channel for literally no reason But he’s discovered the humanity within himself. The whole movie is about AI wishing/wanting to be human. The relationships he’s formed have made him more human.
When the movie ended, I realised I could watch two more hours of it. It was marvelous.
Can't wait until Dennis does the Dune remake in a few years
Alex Raniszeski whaaaaaattttt is that happening?
Mr1234tico yep, look it up
Lol "Dennis"
DADDY!!!
I’ll admit it: I cried SO HARD when the end credits rolled. This movie....HIT me.
?what happens to k in does he die or live?the end?
Denis Villeneuve is the sole reason why I want to be a filmmaker
Bhanuka Wijeyarathne me too
I share the same opinion with you man...I'm a 14 year old kid and I want to become a screenwriter or a director, since I know of myself I've loved movies and I think that I'm gonna start writing a screenplay for a movie and one day...one day I hope it's gonna be made into a great movie...follow your dreams.
"Too bad she won't live...but then again who does?"
Him J.J. Abrams Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg and many other directors out there like that have inspired me along with Damien Chazelle
Good luck man!
Edgar Wright
Harrison ford said Blade Runner 7855 will be the last Blade Runner movie. He also said he didn't like Blade Runner 607. He thought it was overrated.
A normal Guy wtf there is no blade runner 607
moviegeek It's just a joke.
A normal Guy its honestly just retarded
moviegeek I'm seeing that you have no sense of humor.
But what about blade runner 666? Bc I thought that was the best one
nowadays people want a 'movie'.. not a film.. that's the different...
Absolutely spot on...
It's a cycle. People got tired of "movies" back in the 60's, and watched European "films" instead. Then Bonnie and Clyde happened. And now, people got tired of "films", and want "movies" again.
and the loop repeat... then.. reboot... hahaha
Seraph Sirius Not being sarcastic, but could you define the difference between both?
Icex Aoki yeah
I just finished this movie tonight. Its so crazy because the topics and themes of this movie relate to 2023 WAAAAY more than it did in 2017... Its almost as if it's predicting the future. I cant wait to fully watch it again. This time I'd like to be fully concentrated on it because the first time i watched it i only did so during my 30 minute dinner sessions and i had to watch it over the course of 3-4 days
And blood-black nothingness began to spin
A system of cells interlinked within
Cells interlinked within cells interlinked
Within one stem. And dreadfully distinct
Against the dark, a tall white fountain played.
Interlinked!
you're very far off baseline man!
What's it like to hold the hand of someone you love? Interlinked.
Do they put you in an institution? Cells.
Villeneuve = 🐐
From the beginning, I already knew this was going to be a really good movie. I'm so excited to see it tomorrow! Great review Chris!
OMFG! Chris predicted it. My mate said it was a long, boring, convoluted film and it should have been simpler. I knew he was crazy, cause my mind was blown at how good it was.
BMV The Movie Fanatic There was nothing good about it, besides some of the visuals.
Now that's just plain incorrect. Hell, I even think the plot was better than the first movie.
I pity to those that have a short attention spans, that feel this way towards this film.
