Simple. The code says us if u are using 20mm Agg we have to use 150 mm cube. If Agg size is less than 19mm we should use 100 mm cube.
Since most of our construction we use 20mm agg , so we use 150 mm cube only. #CIVILBRAINS

Because smaller size cubes fail very quickly. The normal time for performing the test is 10min. If time taken is less than 10minutes more strength will be shown. You can opt smaller size cubes for compression test but then you should change the FOS value proportionately. For this reason BIS publishes IS codes so that a standard practice will be adopted throughout the country. If they are not followed and if the structure fails due to improper design then the engineer will be held responsible for not following the IS code.

The simple answer to this question is just to save time. You can test even after 1 year for better results (infact after 1 year the creep coefficient is reduced by more than half of its 1 month value), but in field no one waits 1 year to occupy a structure after its construction. More often than not the structure will be loaded by the 15th day, but as per IS code it should be loaded after 28th day for best strength. In the end you are doing all these lab tests just to estimate the value that will be achieved on the field.

@@nemichandbabal.7533 shayad aap soch rahe honge ki jo result ka numerical value jyada h vo acha result h. Lekin asal m aisa nahi h. Isko aisa samjo....aap M20 concrete tayar kar raha h, aur cube strength 28 days ke baad 19N/mm^2 aaya, aur cylinder strength aata h 15.5N/mm^2. Actual strength cylinder deta h i.e 15.5, but cube ne 19 diya, aur field m aap concrete ka strength 19 maanke construction shuru kiya. Concrete ka strength 15.5 hone ke baad bhi aap 19 maanke construction kar raha h which is overestimating the strength of your concrete which makes your structure weak. Though this effect in the field is compensated by using FOS both for material and load in LSM.

That part of friction is not failing the specimen, it is infact resisting the failure and that frictional resistance is known as platen restraint which introduces shear stresses at top and bottom and as we move away from the platens this effect reduces. Since the slenderness ratio of cylinder is more this frictional resistance is less and therefore the strength of cylinder is less when compared to cube. You explained it wrong.
