Wow what an amazing upload load Kirsty .. I really love your Chanel … you have some amazing art goodies those books are amazing where I live we have no art shops apart from the range .. which really doesn’t have much .. I love art and colouring … I am a nail tech and have always loved doing nail art but I struggle with confidence.. and now with having fibromyalgia I struggle sitting there for hours doing nails so I now just do family and friends and no extensions … I’ve really missed my nail art so I got to thinking the next best think for myself is colouring and art and putting the detail into my colour pages .. I use to colour a lot years ago .. before nails .. so now I’m trying to get some nice things so I can concentrate on colouring and on me and my health … I really want some nice books and some really nice pencils .. I have loads of glitters and confetti due to nail art and I have loads of water colour pans and acrylic… I’m even thinking maybe using my stamping plates in these to add little details so my nail things can still be used … thank you for showing me everything and really being there for help I really appreciate it … your work is outstanding x🥰❤️
Hi! Thank you so much for posting this super helpful video. I hope it helps lots of new colorists with their choices. I have a few bits of advice for new colorists. First off, please don’t get too caught up in supply hauling while you’re still deciding which kind of art styles, books, and mediums (pencils, paint, pastels, markers, etc...) you will end up preferring. I went into it blindly and bought full-sized sets of various materials because I didn’t know what I would like. I now have lots of decoration-only supplies on my shelf. I will eventually find use for them, but I wish I had just started smaller to begin with. Borrow or buy small sets or individual stock supplies at first, then borrow or buy the larger sets of your favorites later. Your wallet will thank you. I also recommend trying out some coloring communities that offer free coloring pages. Coloring Bliss is one and has a TH-cam channel to go along with it . If you want to buy, wait for sales on coloring books or go to artists’ websites and Etsy stores for individual coloring pages or sets of pages. This will give you flexibility to try different types of coloring such as portraits, flowers, greyscale, animals, etc... Another bit of advice I’d like to share is to make your coloring personal. Coloring is self expression and therefore in my opinion, it is art. Like others in the coloring community, I started coloring as a way to get through difficult times as well as a way to have fun. If it brings you peace and happiness, it is personal and is beautiful. Lastly, don’t be intimidated by the art of others. Instead let it serve as inspiration for your own art. Many colorists have zero to no art education or background. Their skills were built out of practice and dedication. Welcome to our happy little hobby! Have fun! 😊
A good idea is to print the coloring pages on smooth drawing paper with a little tooth and you have a much better surface than the ordinary cheap printer paper and much coloring books
Thank you, I have been looking on many diffrent you tuber to learn. I've many diffrent pencils and books but I'm a bit afraid to mess the pages up. You are a very good teatcher, better then any one else I've found so far. So thank for being so kind and taking time to inspire.
Thanks. Great explanation of each tool. Never used the deco3D. Also neocolor and acrylic I have yet to try. Want to give it a try. I’m still fairly new at colouring. My blending and layers need work. Also my goal is to do skin - that is still very intimidating. 👏👏🙂
I use about 7 pencils for skin, which you can get the colours on Google and as long as you use light layers, you'll be fine. It takes a while to do skin properly. Go on pintrest, they'll give you the colours you need for skin.
I bought Derwent Inktense blocks, used them on 100% cotton natural fabrick, even tried to fix them with ironing and then washed it - 40°C, short program. 50% of colour was washed out. If somebody has some experience with this medium and how to fix it on fabric, I will be glad. Thanks and have a good days.
Many thanks Kirsty your video was very useful. I really liked the fact that you provided a variety of price points too as it can be bewildering for a newcomer like myself. Love your channel.
Heather Eley Thankyou! There’s still lots of information that I could have shared, but too much to get into one video, so I picked bits and pieces of info, so I’m glad you found it useful x
Just found your beautiful channel. I especially loved the w.w.w. images of the floral fair and the bees. Can’t wait to catch up on your videos. I have subscribed and belled.
My advice for newcomers is to buy open stock coloured pencils in order to try out a brand. Not all companies offer single pencils for sale though. You can get some really good deals in online shops like Jacksons and in places like The Range where you might not imagine that great art supplies are on sale. So cast your net wide, you never know what bargains may be around the corner.
Thankyou! It’s never completely stopped working but it has got to the point were it needed rubbing on a scrap piece of paper to get it working again. I don’t use them anymore as I recently purchased the Arteza white gel pens which are fantastic 💕
I have some coloring books with smooth and easy to dent pages and my colored pencils from my childhood are not usable on this they don't lay down color enough, I became cramps more often and they are to hard for the paper. I had to buy new softer pencils for this. I have bought a pack of Faber Castell classic for this and is much more relaxing to color with it. I miss some more natural colors and dark colors. Well this pencils are for kids and coloring books and maybe kids like intense rainbow colors more. I think the material selection is quite expensive and overlooks the topic of coloring books, it is more the topic of what high-quality materials do I need to create durable pictures that can cope with the usual solar radiation on room walls. Not to forget the luxury handicraft materials that are so expensive because of the name and are not really durable. at least it says permanently and many think that it equates with durability. I just had to let off steam a bit. It builds up pressure when it is shown everywhere that expensive colored pencils are indispensable in order to be able to color well. It takes a lot of practice and thinking about how the colors are built up, which has little to do with whether the colored pencils are durable and expensive.
Oh your definitely right somebody could give me the most expensive paints in the world it doesn’t mean I’m going to be able to paint like Picasso! I definitely get it, takes practice and patience ❤️
@@Kirstycolourandsketch Thanks for the suggestion, but I mostly color on the go and I can't take a very large pack with me. Rather, I have experience with watercolors and I only know colored pencils from my childhood. I find it very different from watercolor and more difficult for me.
Castle art have changed their formula and they now come with coloured names. They are actually now better than the Arteza IMO. You must have bought those ones a while ago, honestly but the set of 72, you get them in a pencil case and their excellent!!
Holbiens ARE NOT worth the money, I stupidly bought the full set and was so disappointed. What you can do with a Holborn pencil, you can do with the polychromos or luminance. Please don't buy into the fact that because their expensive they must be good. I was so disappointed in them. Sold them on eBay the next day so don't recommend these pencils. The polychromos, luminance and Ciaran dach Pablo pencils are my favourites and the inktense and polychromos watercolour.

What advice would you give to new colourists?
Don't compare you're colouring to other peoples, find you're own style. I've been doing it for about three years and I'm still learning.
