Tip for sewists who are anything like me and can get distracted, ending up sewing closed something where you wanted to stop- use a differently colored pin or clip! I personally use red to indicate "Stop sewing here, you dork!" to myself :D It has saved me so much headache of unpicking things!
I have been STRUGGLING to find a circle skirt tutorial that I understand. This is the best video I have watched and I nearly cried in relief. I'm a beginning sewer and have a hard time understanding sewing lingo. But your video was so clear and so easy to follow!!!!!! I made my first skirt thanks to you! My sister is going to love it. Thank you, thank you!
I’ve been sewing for 46 years, but I feel it’s been very beneficial for me to watch some refresher videos, especially when it’s something I haven’t made in a long time.
I really appreciate your step-by-step instructions and how you keep it moving along, showing every step yet not wasting our time to show every pin or every part of the ironing process, just enough so we know what to do. You're a great teacher! I think in the video you forgot to tell us the length of the waistband (you mentioned the width), but it is in the instructions below. This is so handy! Your music is uplifting, yet not overpowering or too loud like some videos I've seen. It's very professional. Thank you!
So I am a complete newbie and this will be my first circle skirt. I’m reading through the comments and nobody else has asked and it doesn’t say in the directions how much you even need fabric wise to start is it a yard? Or is it more? it just says folded in four but I don’t know how big the fabric needs to be in the first place OK silly question but I don’t wanna cut up my fabric if I don’t need it all.
I have made so many skirts with this pattern and I absolutely love how they turn out! I even got a new sewing machine for Christmas! Thank you so much for the incredibly helpful and easy to follow tutorial! I will definitely be using more of your patterns!
Thank you for this tutorial! All the folklorico or double circle skirts I have found call for either zippers or ribbons, I’ve been wanting an elastic waistband and this tutorial is perfect! Thank you so much for the details in making and sewing on an elastic waistband!
I had one day's notice to figure out something for my daughter to wear to a 1950s day at school, and I am not a talented sewist but your tutorial was so clear I was able to sew an adorable checkered skirt from an old sheet in a few hours, and the elastic waistband means she'll be able to wear it for several years. Thank you so much.
Thank you. I know I can always come to you for easy, straightforward and clear instructions to take the stress out and make sewing more enjoyable than it already is.
This is wonderful! I ADORE circle skirts. My LYS recently revamped their store, carrying a wider selection of fabrics. Now I have an excuse to go shopping! LoL!
Thank you Thank you! I just bought fabric to make myself a circle skirt like this a week ago and I wasn't 100% sure how to go about it. This is EXACTLY what I needed. Thank you so so much!
I’ve been watching you for years Dana - before I had children and now I have them too! And I just so happen to need a tutorial for this right when you published it!! Thank you!
The narrow hem in perfect on this... and I love the more sophisticated look of the waistband (as opposed to a yoga waist or something similiar) NICE WORK. Thank you!
Omg, I was just telling my husband that I missed your videos. I’m so happy you’re back! I’m new at sewing and have found your videos enjoyable and easy to follow for a newbie like me.
You really don’t need all kinds of stuff to start sewing, but a good machine is essential. My husband bought me my first one forty years ago, and it still works! Not too long ago I gave it to a young lady that’s like a daughter to me. Don’t be fooled into buying a “beginners,or basic” sewing machine. They really don’t work that well, and you might as well get one that lasts.
Thank you for this! I am following this method to make my first ever circle skirt 🙂. Since its for my little granddaughter I needed a pattern with elasticated waistband and this came into view right on time. Much appreciated 🙏
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I agree with others... this is one of many circle skirt video tutes I've viewed and by far the best! Looking forward to using this waistband technique.
Aw, this is a great tutorial and I love this skirt-a really neat idea to make a few gathers, sort of the best of both worlds. Genius, I had not thought of that. My favorite memory is of the twin dresses my mom made for us. It is not too much, believe me, it is a memory she will cherish.
Thank you for this video! I'm just learning (or remembering - middle school sewing classes were a long time ago 😅) how to sew again and this was a fantastic tutorial. Every other waistband video I watched left me confused, but you somehow made it very clear and easy to understand. I can't wait to get out my sewing machine and fabric and try it! :)
Love your tutorials! I want to teach my granddaughter how to make easy things for her. (Lol like cooking )kids like to wear the things they make. Gets them started. Keep it up!
you are just absolutely fabulous queen, this is my first sewing tutorial and the instructions are super clear and i've already made 6 of these skirts already. thank you for just being amazing.
Thanks Danna I will definitely have to make some that is just so stinking adorable I have eight granddaughters and four daughters that would love a new skirt will have to definitely have to make some great idea to use some fabric up tfs

This is a great tutorial, thanks so much! The only thing I’m confused about is how long you make the rectangle for the elastic band. I made one that’s 8 inches longer than the circumference of my waist and it’s still not long enough. As I pin it, there are bunches so it shortens it but even 8 extra inches isn’t long enough. Thanks!
I love this. The waistband technique works so well with the 1/4 circle skirt pattern I was able to come up with for my daughter's school uniform skirts. I hate waistbands - Thank you!
Haha, yes! Can't make enough clothes for my little girl. :) Love your tutorials! Some of the best out there. I've made lots of the things you've shared.
I recently went to the vet with my dog and she had to wear the cone. For some reason when we took it off I had an idea that it will be awesome stencil to cut out pattern for skirt lol 😂
Nice job! Love your videos. My last step when making these skirts, is to sew a line of stitching on the waistband, at each side to ensure the elastic doesn’t twist. If it’s snug, like yours, it probably doesn’t need it, but I always did it, just to make sure. I bet your daughter loved it!
So awesome you posted this! I come to your channel when I’m preparing to sew something 😬 Can you do a video on how to lengthen a dress hem? You’re awesome!
This has been the first item of clothing I ever made (I’ve made cushion covers but that’s it) and it turned out well enough that my 4 year old daughter won’t take it off. I used a really stretchy fabric so when I cut the hole it was way way too big. I just added some pleats to the waist as I went around but the whole thing was tricky just because of my stupid material choice.
I was so happy to see a new video! When I’m threading elastic through the casing, I have a plastic clothespin that I pinch onto the other end so the elastic won’t snake through as I’m pulling.
I started sewing with your videos but one thing I felt I was missing was knowing more about fabrics. Then I got this wonderful book from the library and I come to realize you are the author! Any chance of reprinting 'Fabrics A to Z'?

Such a great tutorial, thank you! Just a question about making a maxi skirt version... Is there a way to fold fabric to get an adult maxi length? I'm tall and really want to make a swishy, floaty floor length circle skirt!
Hi Kate, Thanks! Yes. You can make a maxi circle skirt, but it's hard to get the fabric long enough....you would likely need to sew two sides seams or even 4 seams to get enough length on your fabric (for an adult). You could also cut a more A-line version of a skirt, so it's not a full circle, and that would allow you to have more fabric length to work with. I hope that makes sense! :) - Dana

:) - Dana
