My VPN works fine too n I live in BJ. As for a lot of Chinese not interested in using VPN, there r a number of reasons: 1. language barrier; 2. Chinese have their own social media network; 3. Many Chinese believe Western mainstream medias r very biased towards China, which is unfortunately true.

But since Biden's policy positions, or any position for that matter, are a mystery, it's anyone's guess.

Do we really want Facebook telling us which ideas are acceptable to express and which are not? Shouldn't we be free to hear alternate views that challenge our understanding, even if they are absurd, conspiratorial, offensive, or just wrong? Take, for example, the 1619 project, part of which was refuted by historians. Should this have been banned? Or should it be allowed to help us critically evaluate the foundations of the USA?
If this moves forward, it will lead to protected ideas that cannot be questioned or challenged. It will lead to us having access only to ideas corporations find acceptable. It will lead to the restriction of our ability to critically evaluate ideas and understand why certain views are harmful. This is far more dangerous to democracy.
Just ban harassment, threats of violence, and other forms of illegal speech. Let users be free to express/hear legal speech.

Im a big supporter of UBI and canvassed for Yang. BUT, I strongly disagree with this whole episode. Social media should be treated as a POPS (privately owned public space) in terms of free speech. The platform is advertised as a PUBLIC forum, so the bill of wrights should apply. Im all for an advertising dividend for users, but language policing is not good. I cant remember the studdy, but the data shows that when miss information is part of an aggregate of public info being distributed, statisticly more people come to the correct conclusions. Censorship was proven to worsen isolation bubbles and drive people into them. Facebook should not be profiting off our data for free and without informed consent, BUT they are not responsible for what is expressed by private individuals on a public platform.

This, 1000%. Yang is my favorite guy, but as a *liberal* (not a conservative!) this terrifies me. I don't want a platform bigger than China, operating as THE public sphere, to have anything other than free speech and free association. There will be lots of negatives-of course-but it's the price we pay for a net positive. Darkness breeds more darkness; expose bad ideas with light.

    • @culdhainmccallister6281
      @culdhainmccallister6281 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I really agree assuming that this is considered a public place. Unfortunately, at this time it is still only a private forum so technically the rules for free speech don't apply. I think that Facebook is making the correct decision not to censor based on opinions as long as they do that across the board. However, with that note, I think that the companies that are trying to boycott them are just caving to the vocal minority and that can come back to bite them hard if Facebook sticks to it's guns and doesn't cave themselves.

Me, being a progressive anti racist who wants nothing more to see racism, systemic racism, and inequality defeated; I vehemently DISAGREE With AI that can detect hate speech, additional obscure rules placed on the users and panels of unknown individuals censoring whatever they consider to be hate speech, deleting accounts, removing political ads etc...All of this is very BAD.
No No No No No. What people really need....is more power...not less. And by power...what I mean is...TRANSPARENCY
What this ultimately comes down to is Facebook is just too damn big. As a platform....facebook should be transparent with EVERYTHING. We want details of what 3rd parties are purchasing our information. If we see a political ad....we should be able to know where it came from...who published it. This should be Law. We wouldn't have had as major of issues with Cambridge Analytica or propaganda if we knew where our data went, and where information is coming in....THAT is a real platform.....What facebook is right now...isn't that.
Because you see....right now everything ONLY works one way...and effectively...it the facebook users that are getting screwed. Why? Because they do not have any power to do anything with their accounts or data. The whole business model is sketch...THAT is the issue.
Anytime there is a "solution" to a problem that involves internet user's data being reviewed by some board or AI that has the power to censor and shutdown the user...you have BIG PROBLEMS. Who is in control of the AI...some private company not accountable to anything but their bottom line? That is bad enough. But what the hell happens when Autocrats or authoritarians get a hold of these "panels" or AI? Well if you can track "hate" speech...you have the ability to track...ANY SPEECH. This is an Authoritarian dream come true...you will NEVER have to EVER worry about ANY dissent. Oh look...this user continues to use targeted keywords about the products I am trying to have a monopoly over....HATE SPEECH! BANNED! (One less start up to worry about)
. A progressive candidate made an ad about my company dumping sewage into the drinking water...FACT CHECK..False! Delete their account, cut off their donor base, HATE Speech!
All of this leads to a very dark place. The internet...once a tool once used for freedom of information and speech....a tool that empowered millions of people worldwide....Will be the tool to crush and silence all of these things.
This isn't how you defeat racism, hatred, discrimination, injustice, bigotry, or inequality...indeed it's quintessentially the opposite. This is the permanent opening of pandora's box to the worst forms of it!
If Facebook is having issues with hate speech....perhaps begin taxing the shit out of them until they agree to full transparency with everything they do and give users right to go to court on any action or decision facebook makes involving that user. There is your 3rd party.
      Problem fucking solved.

I want to agree with you but much of our law is already subjective. We have a jury after all and legal interpretation is not cut and dry either- someone or group always decides what is considered moral, neutral or immoral. From watching the first half Yang basically said they have so much money they could figure something out if they wanted. It’s not like he wanted some sjw leader to head it, just that someone ought to be looking into it as fairly and reasonable as possible. Speech isn’t entirely free as it stands already, we are just shifting the supervision from courts where they are ill suited, to the businesses that enable the speech.

00:50 So in the first minute what I'm hearing is the classic, "But HE STARTED IT!" Lol. "Toxicity" isn't to blame, you are to blame.
When you look at the push for safe spaces, the validating of "triggers," and such, everyone is ignoring the fundamental truth: Nobody can make you upset, angry, or whatever, without your permission.
And people give others permission all the time, in assuming they know what they're talking about, or that they have some authority over you. But you are the ultimate authority over yourself, and really that's what this is all about, IMO. It's a subtle form of brainwashing in which you automatically, and without thinking, assume others have control over you, or that you have less authority in making your own decisions or beliefs.
What is not being taught or encouraged is: KNOW THYSELF. This requires introspection and critical thinking. But society and the "new world order" doesn't want people to develop critical thinking and analysis. They don't want people who are introspective. They want extroverted people who feel first, act now, and think never.

Policing the speech via AI is a huge step.
Is part of this effort going to include PSAs on how to avoid rudeness oneself? How to avoid reacting badly? How in terms of mental health do we bracket hate speech we *do* actually encounter and avoid spreading it? How do we put it into personal perspective.
Because that is something that is really difficult to learn. We don’t necessarily know how to mentally or emotionally deflect meanness.

My understanding of Facebook, Twitter, and other such things is that they get certain protections for acting as neutral platforms rather than curating their content, which would make them publishers, and liable for the content. The problem is, they have clearly, in the past, curated some of their content. If Facebook is moving in the direction of being a neutral platform, they are acting correctly. There are some points to be made about the selection of ad pairing with content, but for the most people these large advertisers are morally and politically in the wrong, as they are promoting censorship.

I entirely disagree that small-medium sized companies *must* market on FB to be viable, and I believe stating that as fact is myopic and disingenuous. I have an almost 6 year old mom & pop shop that has spent less than $100 on marketing, and we have more business than we can keep up with. Our marketing dollars went into dozens of mini cupcakes packages from the local Walmart, me slapping home-made business cards on them, and us delivering to companies around us. No sales...just walking in the door and saying "Here you go!" and walking out. How one markets, and more importantly, where they need to market, is entirely dependent on what they do. What is a reality is that in order to place anywhere on a Google search a company must have a FB profile, and man that pisses me off. By the way, FB lost me almost 4 years ago. I think they are pure evil, partly for your initiative to get paid for your own data, mostly because of the amount of hatred and divisiveness it supported during the 2016 campaign.
