This is the video I’ve been working on for the past week. Let me just get one thing straight, I am by NO means saying that Echoes is a perfect game, or that it is without any faults. In this video, I just highlight the positive experiences I’ve had with the game, in an attempt to dispel some of the negativity I’ve heard from some reluctant members of the community. I know that Echoes is generally well received at this point, but I still felt like making this video to really express my gratitude over how much of an amazing experience this game has given me. That being said, I have considered doing a “Why You Should Play” series for some of the other games in the series as well. What games would you be interested in seeing me apply this format to?
You can try starting from the first game you played which was FE7. Or do it chronologically, meaning start from FE4. Btw, well done on this video. Echoes indeed got the spirit of the classic Fire Emblem, and it was so beautifully remastered.

Well, reviewers usually have a limited time to review a game and this game really loves wasting your time sometimes. So I'm not suprised about the lukewarm review scores.
what its more impressive than the score itself is what they said, they complained about things like no marriage and children, that it was too hard, they complained about permadeath (in a fire emblem game WITH casual mode lol) and also that if u lost too many units the game was unbeatable, like, no shit sherlock... they are just stupid
Amazing video bro, the story telling and voice acting are so good that it almost makes up for the bad map designs and it saddens me that this game got hit with poor sales as it might let Nintendo & IS to have second thoughts about remaking Genealogy of the Holy War or Binding Blade. I wish some people gave it a chance instead of dismissing it just based on the new mechanics it lacks. I hope this video convinces them also at the end you should have included that classic clip from IGN where she says "Just move in Frederick to kill weakened units" LOL
Um, it's been the best selling thing in Japan recently. And it seems to be doing well here, given how everyone is coddling it and neglecting to mention its *extremely* glaring flaws. For what it's worth, it kinda deserves a mediocre score because the plot etc. don't make up for the maps. They just *don't*, and I don't know if I'll ever find the miraculous kindness to forgive them for Thabes, which brought down the entire experience tenfold. Celica also starts behaving really unreasonably toward the end of act 4, and the art isn't all good. I mean, *look at Alm's fucking face in the CG where he kills Rudolf.*

@@AlphaSections I'd say it's better that way because that way Alm's relationship with his loved one can be properly developed buuut...well it didn't happen, just a few key encounters with Celica, and that I could assume Alm and Celica only grew up thinking about each other because Alm only had Faye and she's a little weird, and Celica had no one, but aside from that I felt the main protags couple lacked more chemistry on-screen, and the ending scene was just....too rushed for me lol.
The writing in this game is phenomenal. Also, I can vouch for being able to beat the game on hard classic without excessive grinding. The post game dungeon however, might be a different story lol.
The post game dungeon offsets an already highly mediocre game by being what is easily the worst designed area in ALL OF FIRE EMBLEM EVER. This is including notorious chapters like Genesis, that dumb archer fort, Maniac Mode Chapter 4, Jerme's PFoD etc. It almost outright forces the player to grind, and everything on the entire chapter massively, *massively* relies on luck. You need blessed units to even stand a chance versus not Grima, but the generic fucking enemies, they cover the entire map and are fucking ridiculously bulky, deal literally insane damage (28 magic enemy sage with sagittae in a game where the strongest enemy mage you ever fight is Jedah up til that point) and worse yet the reinforcements in the final encounter are TOTALLY RANDOM. You get unlucky? RIP. Even worse? No save points. In the entire dungeon. You have to go through the entire stupid dungeon AGAIN. If you enter a generic encounter from floor 6 onwards, you're not fucked but you can kiss your turnwheel uses goodbye and if you don't have enough of those for Grima then lol. Sorry, IS, but no matter how sexy Berkut sounds this isn't salvageable at all. (Oh, and all but 2 rooms in that dungeon get reused at least, it's lazy as fuck technically as well.)
Felix Harman Aren't most post-game dungeons like that? Providing a serious challenge to people wanting more? Yes my 3DS went flying a few times because I got raped by a fucking random OP villager in Thabes on my first try (thank Mila for the turnwheel), but I never expected anything from that dungeon to be easy to begin with. And one evacuation halfway is often enough to strenghten your units enough for the entire dungeon should you feel underleveled, something I hardly call grinding. I actually made it to the seventh floor with three promotable units (Paladin, Myrmidon) before having to return due to a full convoy. But I agree on the design aspect. For a dungeon called a "Labyrinth", it is stupidly lineair and repetitive in design. A few more different chambers or hidden chests would be appreciated.

A well structured video that cuts the bullshit and gives us the truth, I agree on all fronts that Mangs talked about; Echoes is by far one of the best FE games in a long time, and is trying to compete with my personal top 3 games in the series. But uh... Don't buy the DLCs. They cost more than the game itself for less than 50% of the content.
*Don't buy the pass I'll pick up Rise of the Deliverance. Story DLC I'll support, but nothing else (though Cipher pack can be considered, if you're into those dudes)

FiendIII_Thomas Kaine I don't know if that's fair. Nintendo certainly does their share of payouts for reviews and they are way more guilty of it than fromsoft which was considered a nothing company before dark souls 1. Sure Bandai and from soft probably shelled out the money to not get a crap review but the nostalgia and flashy boss fights earned it it's score even though it's pretty flawed for what a souls game is meant to be.

Yea, I still think people use it way less often than they should, especilly considering how often you can miss a 90% or get critted by low% in this game, its there, you get charges, something goes bad and might cause problem if you continue, just rewind it, dont worry about using tools you got from the game
this game is worth playing if only because the story is one of the best directions to take FE Stories from here on out, and the characters are such an improvement over fates and awakening, being almost fully 2 dimensional. if the next game has marriage, fine. if it has a 3 way story, fine. But please, IS, use THIS as the inspiration for the writing and not the last 2. while the last 2 games arent really bad in some aspects, this level of effort deserves to be given to the writing from here on out, and there is almost no excuse not to do it properly now. dunno bout everyone elses opinions. but for what its worth, I refuse to believe that there cant be an FE game with good gameplay and a good story. this may not be it, but it is a MUCH better direction than before.
Okay then so how about they forgo the story completely and just take it in the direction they did Conquest. If it's a choice between good gameplay and good story, which it currently is shaping up to be, I think good gameplay is what it boils down to.
In the article where the creators of FE talk about a potential advance wars recently, they say "it will be hard to bring in character relationships in advance wars" In other words, its too late, waifu shippings have been ingrained deep inside them. So the next games are definitely not gonna use this as inspiration.
i think it's worth noting that the next main fire emblem title will be directed by the same director as echoes (who didn't direct awakening or fates) so it'll probably have a similar direction to this
maaan this game is by far the best fire emblem game Ive players so far (Ive played only fates and awakening so please dont kill) , seariously the story, the presentation, the MUSIC (im by chapter 4 right now, my god i love the overworld theme), im a big RPG fan so random battles dont really bother me (except for the ambush things in the overworld thats bad, can get some of your characters killed with no way to fix it unless you restart and maybe you where doing something and you didnt save) but still this game is awesome, i would definitely buy it if they bring things like this in the future. i can see why ghast was saying justplaygaidenbro.
I recently started playing Echoes and I'm nearing the end of the game. So far, it's has been an amazing game and experience. I'm relatively new to the franchise as my first game was Awakening and Fates was my second. But playing through this game has given me a new look to Fire Emblem in general and I'm curious about playing the older games. Also, amazing video Mangs!

Game sure has its bad sides... But the possitives VASTLY outnumber those, I did enjoy old GBA games, I really liked Awakening and Fates cause it was what got me into series more or less, but Echoes is by far my fav game of the series, its just really good, only thing i worry about a bit is that people say its rather short, so I wonder how short exactly does that mean Also, TL;DR version of this review - Fuck IGN, they know nothing
Galax94cz To put it into perspective using my own experiences: Nearly 50 hours to complete conquest on hard alongside some dlc. I'm about 49 hours or so in Echoes on hard. I still have to beat Duma and chapter 6 dungeon. So all in all its length heavily depends on your play style.

Felix Harman If thats how you see it, sure, your opinion, but thats also all to that, i dont see it as that and i know much more people that would heavily disagree with what you said, as most of the cons you mentioned have easy workaround. One i know for certain though, its a lot of things, but cashgrab isnt one of them
Its been three years since this game came out. My first Fire Emblem. Dear God what a fantastic game for me to start with. This one journey, solidified my love for this franchise.
its one of my favorite FE games that's for sure with 2 of my favorite Lords of FE in it so I agree with it be a great game and I know FE16 Switch is gonna be amazing much more unique FE game as stated from recents interviews especially when the Echoes director is doing the game it restore my hope for the series!
Am I the only one that absolutely ADORES the fact that the anime style they used for the cutscenes just feels so... classic. Like, something from the mid 2000's, and it suits the game's general aesthetics SO WELL.
Even as an 'Awakening Baby', this game is absolutely amazing, and probably goes up as one of my favourite RPGs of all time. Coming from a background of western RPGs, this game still absolutely flourishes with its gripping narrative, tense, addictive, and strategic combat, not to mention it has some of the most gorgeous portrait art I've seen in a video game to date. xD
1:15 agree with your point except for that the fact that only the side cast who are automatic recruits regularly appear like that that's why you never see kliff or Faye speak in story dialogue but gray and Tobin speak consistently. (Not complaining though those two have some of my favourite dialogue in the game)
I mean, I wouldn't say it's perfect by any means, but the devs did a good job playing the hand they were dealt. They managed to create an extremely polished game that's accessible/appealing to modern fans without just telling Gaiden's story with Awakening/Fates gameplay. While there are certain mechanics that I think show their age I at least respect that the developers aimed to create an updated version of Gaiden from the ground up rather than making a totally different game that tells the same story.
You and Luckycrit convinced me to get this game and Fates after I thought I was done with the series when I got Awakening. I actually think this will be my favorite Fire Emblem game with the free roaming elements and dungeon exploring.
I like her because she doesn't sound obnoxious, despite being the youngest character in the game. x) I feel shivers down my spine thinking about how her japanese VA probably is -SQUEEKY!!!!!!-
Coming from someone who started off with Awakening: Echoes is AMAZING! This is the best FE title on the 3DS. Though I have yet to beat the game at the time of this comment, I love what I've experienced: the story, the characters, the world. All of it feels so alive to me and that's something that neither Awakening nor Fates (or any of their DLC) could pull off. My only complaint is with the aggressive stance enemy units take. I'm fine with it later when units are more defined, but early on, it can be a problem trying to raise up weaker units. Anyways, great vid and I agree completely; if you love older FE titles, but want an update (graphically, character-wise, etc.), get this game.
You get a like man. I havent played any other FE titles, so as a fresh player into the series, I think it's awesome and the problems dont make the game boring
Also, no comments on the soundtrack? Sure, it suffers from Radiant Dawn OST syndrome, but for me, it was pure bliss just how well it meshed with what was happening in the game at the time. AND THAT MAP THEME IN ACT 4 GAWD DAMN.

Here six years later, playing through it for first time despite preordering it at release. Once I got into it I haven't been able to put it down. Love that it's simpler than newer releases. The outdated mechanics are actually pretty nice.
I started it today and went beat the first chapter in one go! It’s pretty good though the battles in dungeon could be a bit too frequent. Does it get old quick in latter chapters?
I have to agree, Echoes is a brilliant game. It's fun, the combat is engaging, and the dungeon crawling elements made it much more interesting as a whole. One of the details I noticed would be that you can cut grass, and while that may not seem at all interesting, this also occurs on the battlefield with the standard animations. It makes the world seem more real, because that means they're not just in it, but are a part of it. My biggest complaint isn't really all that big, as it's about the lighting in dungeons, which can be a little much in the brighter rooms. So yeah, I really like this game, if the 15 hours I had clocked on just two days of having it are anything to say.
Just tried it... love it! It's true, the maps are not very creative, especially after I just played Conquest. But it doesn't matter, those big plains with a few enemies actually give you some time to plan a counter and lure the more far enemies into a high defense unit that will distract them, leaving the enemy main force without their much-needed reinforcements.
There should be a compilation of the number of times Mangs says "at the end of the day". Also, this was a pretty good video. I didn't know some of things that were featured in the positives. I want Echoes so bad but at the moment I gotta wait a bit to get the game.
At the very end of the game there is some grinding required for the post game content. Besides that I only needed to do a little bit of grinding on alms route at chapter 4. I did the whole thing on classic/hard and to be honest the grinding wasn't necessarily unfun.
So Mangs, apparently the camera follows ranged attacks only if you use them at a certain distance. That includes Magic, Weapons like Javelins, and Arrows.
Only the required characters play a role. The optional ones only get mila/town conversations and a few supports. They really don't matter beyond their recruitment sadly enough. The only issues I had with the central story was how stupidly naïve celica is and I was a bit annoyed with Mathilda's prison scene with her weak depiction. The middle single tile river was stupid. The rest of the terrain looked fine. I agree with the rest though. This game is awesome, even if a bit short.
not only that but Celica is supposed to be a protagonist yet she's not a key character for the plot to be resolved. Even without her Alm can solve everything, he unites Zofia and Rigel by both his actions and blood, he gets the divine Falchion, he has the meaningful interactions and connections to the main antagonists, and he can ultimately defeat Duma with just his team if he had to, he only needs his Falchion, Celica plays no special role aside from opening the east flood gate, and she's supposed to be a protagonist, heck, Alm doesn't even emotionally depend on her or anything, he just goes on about to do what he needs to do with or without her approval, in this dynamic of two protagonists he really doesn't need her for anything more than perhaps wishful thinking of being together if he survives the ordeal.
This video is still doing good work, ever since I finished playing through the routes of the 3 Lords in Three Houses I was considering getting Echoes, and this ended up tipping me over the edge due to how it addressed the gameplay concerns that had me a bit wary. I'm 10 hours into the game now and really liking it!
One of my favorite aspects of the combat animations is when archers draw their bows, you can see their hand shaking as they pull the arrow as far back as it goes. This is particularly notable on a kill shot.
I personally started the game on hard mode, beat it once, and have nearly completed a second playthrough. Furthermore, I have still had a lot of fun on the second playthrough. It's hard, but it's not quite Conquest levels of pure insanity (most of the time). The replayability is very real, which is a balance for a hard game I have rarely seen since Radiant Dawn normal mode. Furthermore, the Turnwheel is implemented wonderfully, with upgrades being natural and well-paced. This is an absolutely phenomenal game, up there with the Bravely Default series and other cult classics as a 3DS buy. Actually, scratch that, this is one of about 10 games I think is actually worth buying the 3ds to play if you can only get one game.
I just beat this game yesterday as of the time I am posting this, and as a relatively new Fire Emblem fan, (Only really played the 3DS Games) Echoes has become my favorite Fire Emblem so far. Mostly because it was the first Fire Emblem game I've played that didn't leave me fatigued about 3/4ths through the game. I had to force myself to finish Fates, (and Awakening to a lesser extent) but Echoes simply never let me put it down! I played on Classic Normal mode and managed to beat the game with little-to-no grinding, just strategy, and without losing a single unit. Mila's turnwheel is awesome as a counter against the sometimes bullshit RNG, although I had a one time case where I used it and it caused the game to actually crash... Regardless, nothing like that ever happened again.
Basically, Echoes is Gaiden but with more character, better graphics, and faster gameplay. I'd say it's the better way to see Valentia, but still holds some of the issues of the original. The maps are still complete ass, Celica and Alm's relationship feels just messy, and Cantors are still annoying. A new thing is the little quake ability shared by like two enemies. It just can cause some annoying turn wheel uses. The Mila's Turnwell is amazing!!! I'd say pick it up, but it isn't a masterpiece like as sold in the video.
Reagino, they removed all the fun shit from Gaiden tho. Like, remember OP falcoknights and infinite range warp and the broken speed ring? I miss those.

Something I feel that no one has noticed about the animations in this game is that just before getting his, some units attempt to dodge, but fail. It genuinely scares me at times, and makes the fights feel more alive. No, this is not just my imagination. I slowed down the fight animations and saw that units do sometimes attempt to dodge before getting hit
Solid video that has made me more likely to get the game. I still feel like I'll feel a void where the flexibility of units classes was, but it may be partially filled by the third tier classes being pretty cool and the arts.
I really like this game. I have about 54 hours in it and beat the first 5 acts. Right now I’m playing the DLC and disappointed that most of the extra maps don’t have a real story to them. However there are a few good ones mixed in. The main game though is a true gem. I love the art, the story telling the battles. In so many ways this is as good or better then Awakening and miles better then fates which wasn’t bad but is my least favorite of the three 3DS Fire Emblem games. This game is worth a purchase.
I'm yet to buy this game, very curious about this, using the Mila's wheel thingy. Will it re-roll RNG or do you need to use a vulnerary? (Like save states on GBA titles)
From what I heard the director for this game is working on the next major fore emblem title (I hope to god this rumor is true) also I believe they should take some of the mechanics in echoes and implement them for the new FE (weapon arts, three promotions, shields, and honestly milas turnwheel as addresses that many FE players tend to restart a level if one character dies)
Bought It Yesterday and I am already on Chapter 3, I am loving this Game so much. I Hope It sells well, because if they can do this to old boring Gaiden, Imagine what they could do to Geneology or even Binding Blade. Good video Mangs, Let's show everyone the King of all 3ds Games.
Awesome vid, will be showing it to any friends who aren't already about to kill me for how much I've been gushing over this game. My brother too should be playing it (he's started with Awakening and Fates despite me hounding him over the years to play the older games when they were current) but its not the absence of avatars or waifus that's turning him off, but the magic system. I don't think you touched upon it too much in your vid, so is there anything you can say to assuage him about the hp draining mechanics he abhors? I've told him over and over that its hardly noticeable and easily managed, but he's not convinced....
If you enjoy solid writing and cast of characters with some new QoL changes or want to see an updated Gaiden, then this is probably one of the best games for you. If you're looking for gameplay depth and good map design, you should skip it as you will probably be disappointed.
Unfortunately that's why I still prefer Fates just a smidge. The story is clunky and you have to work to get the characters stories, but the gameplay, strategy elements and choice is so amazing. Here, the opposite is true, just goes to show how far the map design has come I suppose. One of my bigger complaints is the abundance of rout maps, which was a complaint many people had for Awakening that I don't see the fanboys mention about Echoes
mooseyluke I personally didn't find Fates' gameplay all that amazing because pairup felt too good to me. Not as good as in Awakening, but still good enough to make a lot of the game mindless. I think Conquest makes that better though with it's difficulty. On Conquest I agree with what you said.
Harvee™ Generally a lot of my arguments for Fates are from conquest, and I should really learn to stop that. Conquest is so much better than the other two, I have no idea how they did it
mooseyluke Ah okay, that makes sense. I still don't thing CQ's gameplay was better than SoV's, but that's just personal preference. I also tend to like the older games more even though my first game was Awakening. But hey, we all have our biases.
I love this game so much. By far my favorit Fire Emblem. I wish the whole modern series would be more like this than awakening. I hate this dating bullshit and three houses is simply tedious with all that micromanagment. Oh and by the way, is a game fun and engaging then there is no grind. Grind is more a mindset than a propertie. In all my hours of Echoes there was zero grind for me. How could a game so beautiful and good sounding grindy anyway? By the way; I LOVE the art style, I wish every FE would look like this.
in 2:10, in the theme of characters, it annoys me how they claim how the only way to know the characters was reading their supports is the only way you will know them, when GBA games have done it MUCH WORSE, case in point, Renault, he didn't do anything in the story and his backstory could be easily missed, considering it was at the tail end of the game, and he's isn't the only case, so it bothers me how they get a free pass while the newer games handle supports much better

I pre-ordered this game a month before it was released out of really high expectations. Never did they falter, but then I started to feel worried that my buy was too hasty. However, the game met with my expectations, even passed it. I was really worried about the map design, and while it is still very iffy, I enjoyed most maps in the game because of unit placement and a vast amount of options to tackle them (shoutout to Grieth's Citadel). The voice acting is amazing, with only Clive's falling short in my eyes. They each felt really impactful and real. The support conversations are short and sweet - even Faye's was pretty heartwarming. The writing in the villains are really good, bar for Desaix. Berkut's was especially wonderful. If you like Fire Emblem, this game is simply a must.
I'm loving Echoes so far, and it's threatening to dethrone Blazing Sword as my favorite Fire Emblem game, something which I never thought would happen. It's just...it's just plain fun. I've probably grinded a bit more than my fair share, but about half of it is unintentional, and I just try to get new units up to speed with the rest of the party. But I can't help it if enemies keep running into my party when I'm moving my other army
One of the lines Genny says was making me think they might be doing a sequel of this. She talks about writing a book based on the adventure they are on, then mentions doing a sequel. It's probably nothing, but you never know.
Its 2019. I Just got a 3ds xl though there are few now at gamestop. Typed up the Fire emblem games and narrowed it to this game aside from awakening. I wanna try echoes. Saw many reviews but this video finally made the decision. I'm gonna get this game

Some people I know said they wish the weapon triangle was in this game but I’m actually really happy it wasn’t, as I feel it would’ve taken away some of the elements that made Gaiden, Gaiden. One of the biggest things that made me love this game was the voice acting. When Alm realizes that he just killed his father, and he screams out in sadness, man I FELT his pain, no other Fire Emblem game made me feel like that. The story is also marvelous, some of the best in the series by far. I’m very happy that the new villains had some really good background and depth to them, because recently the villains have just been bad because why not. If I were to rate this game I would say it’s 9.3/10. The story is great, animation flows, cutscenes are beautiful to watch, and dialogue makes you feel like you are really there listening to an everyday conversation. The maps could use some work and sometimes the enemies can be weird but that is a minor nitpick. The fact that IGN gave this a bad review makes me laugh, “Now move in Fredrick to kill weakened units.”
I would've loved more ost variety, I played the game really fast and finished chapter 5 last week, I say this because after so much game, the last sections where you get to Hrodulf, Berkut and finally Duma are absolute hype thanks to finally having some different map ost and battle ost. I also don't know how many support conversations there are but I feel it should have a bit more, also, while I like that there's no infinite couple posibilities, in this specific case I didn't really feel for the main protagonists' couple, they just didn't have almost any encounter, though I understand Alm and Celica perhaps went through their childhood and adolescence thinking about each other because they literally had no one else to think about (Celica was alone cause Boey was already going to be with Mae and Alm had Faye but he just didn't see her that way). I felt more chemistry between Alm and Clair than with Celica. Also, for a story having two protagonists you could have just Alm as the main and he would resolve the plot anyways even without Celica, he's the one who unites Zofia and Rigel both by his actions and his blood, he's the one granted the divine Falchion to slay Duma for good, he has the most meaningful interactions with the main antagonists and his connections to some of them, his team has more relevance, chapter 5 was for them in the most part until the very end, not even Celica's team did anything relevant even without her cause they were just relegated to be trapped, I guess having almost 40 characters for chapter 5 was too much to handle for the devs. Alm's team has a better story in my opinion, from villagers to liberators to national heroes all while going beyond their initial expectations and doing their best, all the way to the plot twist of Alm being Rigel's prince and finally uniting Valentia restoring the old continent's glory. Celica just over-complicated everything and many times believed the clearly dark and evil guys who gave no solid argument nor evidence that they would "help" her and tried to kill her and her teammates many times, so much that Saber got fed up by her at some point, she's not necessary to slay Duma, she didn't even deal with Jedah the antagonist of her route, she did nothing special to aid Alm more than opening the flood gate, that's literally her only big accomplishment, as a protagonist it isn't enough. She was there to play the damsel in distress in the end to get Alm all over her, that's it. Celica's team story?, nothing, basically all her teammates join her cause why not?, that's it, the only ones who truly join her for something else might be her friends boey mae and genny, conrad cause older brother, and valbar that got his revenge and his long wished inner peace, and resolved to help her in exchange, still, only Saber and Conrad have some importance in story cutscenes. They're just there for the sake of being a second protagonist team and they don't even exist until the ending in chapter 5. You could erase Celica's team and even her from the story, give more developement to Alm's story, and that's it, I liked the two teams idea, but it could've been better excecuted storywise. For the rest, I don't really have complaints, I have to play the post-end chapter 6 now, I really liked this game, just lacked more music variety for my taste, and if there's Alm-Celica's support conversations in chapter 6, at least from my perspective, it doesn't count, the main story already ended, develop the romantic interest IN the main story in this kind of games, or else it doesn't impact me.
Agreed with this whole video; I have been hyped since this game was announced, but was also skeptical because it was a faithful remake of a dated game, and it would be my first fire emblem game, so I was worried it would be too hard, clunky, shallow story and characters, etc. Decided to go in and buy it the day after it came out, and it's been FANTASTIC, with none of the problems I expected it to have. Please everyone buy this game. It's good for you.
Just wanted to ask anyone would be willing to answer, is it even worth it to play Fire Emblem Fates over this or should I play both? I was planning on playing both versions of Fates for both sides of the story but I hear that the game wasnt as good as hoped. Im currently still playing Awakening and loving it so far so I want some other opinions on which game I should play after I finish Awakening (My first Fire Emblem game).
Well said Mangs. I really hope this game does well. I'd like to see other Echoes games in the form of other remakes. Awakenings is my first Fire Emblem game and I'd like to play older games with the Echoes treatment.
This is the video I’ve been working on for the past week. Let me just get one thing straight, I am by NO means saying that Echoes is a perfect game, or that it is without any faults. what its more impressive than the score itself is what they said, they complained about things like no marriage and children, that it was too hard, they complained about permadeath (in a fire emblem game WITH casual mode lol) and also that if u lost too many units the game was unbeatable, like, no shit sherlock... they are just stupid

Amazing video bro, the story telling and voice acting are so good that it almost makes up for the bad map designs and it saddens me that this game got hit with poor sales as it might let Nintendo & IS to have second thoughts about remaking Genealogy of the Holy War or Binding Blade. I wish some people gave it a chance instead of dismissing it just based on the new mechanics it lacks. And it seems to be doing well here, given how everyone is coddling it and neglecting to mention its *extremely* glaring flaws. For what it's worth, it kinda deserves a mediocre score because the plot etc. don't make up for the maps. They just *don't*, and I don't know if I'll ever find the miraculous kindness to forgive them for Thabes, which brought down the entire experience tenfold. Celica also starts behaving really unreasonably toward the end of act 4, and the art isn't all good. I mean, *look at Alm's fucking face in the CG where he kills Rudolf.*

The writing in this game is phenomenal.
Also, I can vouch for being able to beat the game on hard classic without excessive grinding. The post game dungeon however, might be a different story lol.

The post game dungeon offsets an already highly mediocre game by being what is easily the worst designed area in ALL OF FIRE EMBLEM EVER.
This is including notorious chapters like Genesis, that dumb archer fort, Maniac Mode Chapter 4, Jerme's PFoD etc.
It almost outright forces the player to grind, and everything on the entire chapter massively, *massively* relies on luck. You need blessed units to even stand a chance versus not Grima, but the generic fucking enemies, they cover the entire map and are fucking ridiculously bulky, deal literally insane damage (28 magic enemy sage with sagittae in a game where the strongest enemy mage you ever fight is Jedah up til that point) and worse yet the reinforcements in the final encounter are TOTALLY RANDOM. You get unlucky? RIP. Even worse? No save points. In the entire dungeon. You have to go through the entire stupid dungeon AGAIN. If you enter a generic encounter from floor 6 onwards, you're not fucked but you can kiss your turnwheel uses goodbye and if you don't have enough of those for Grima then lol.
Sorry, IS, but no matter how sexy Berkut sounds this isn't salvageable at all. (Oh, and all but 2 rooms in that dungeon get reused at least, it's lazy as fuck technically as well.)
Felix Harman Aren't most post-game dungeons like that? Providing a serious challenge to people wanting more? Yes my 3DS went flying a few times because I got raped by a fucking random OP villager in Thabes on my first try (thank Mila for the turnwheel), but I never expected anything from that dungeon to be easy to begin with. And one evacuation halfway is often enough to strenghten your units enough for the entire dungeon should you feel underleveled, something I hardly call grinding. I actually made it to the seventh floor with three promotable units (Paladin, Myrmidon) before having to return due to a full convoy.
But I agree on the design aspect. For a dungeon called a "Labyrinth", it is stupidly lineair and repetitive in design. A few more different chambers or hidden chests would be appreciated.

Nintendo certainly does their share of payouts for reviews and they are way more guilty of it than fromsoft which was considered a nothing company before dark souls 1. Sure Bandai and from soft probably shelled out the money to not get a crap review but the nostalgia and flashy boss fights earned it it's score even though it's pretty flawed for what a souls game is meant to be.

this game is worth playing if only because the story is one of the best directions to take FE Stories from here on out, and the characters are such an improvement over fates and awakening, being almost fully 2 dimensional. if the next game has marriage, fine. if it has a 3 way story, fine. But please, IS, use THIS as the inspiration for the writing and not the last 2. while the last 2 games arent really bad in some aspects, this level of effort deserves to be given to the writing from here on out, and there is almost no excuse not to do it properly now.

Okay then so how about they forgo the story completely and just take it in the direction they did Conquest. If it's a choice between good gameplay and good story, which it currently is shaping up to be, I think good gameplay is what it boils down to.
In the article where the creators of FE talk about a potential advance wars recently, they say "it will be hard to bring in character relationships in advance wars" In other words, its too late, waifu shippings have been ingrained deep inside them. So the next games are definitely not gonna use this as inspiration.
i think it's worth noting that the next main fire emblem title will be directed by the same director as echoes (who didn't direct awakening or fates) so it'll probably have a similar direction to this

maaan this game is by far the best fire emblem game Ive players so far (Ive played only fates and awakening so please dont kill) , seariously the story, the presentation, the MUSIC (im by chapter 4 right now, my god i love the overworld theme), im a big RPG fan so random battles dont really bother me (except for the ambush things in the overworld thats bad, can get some of your characters killed with no way to fix it unless you restart and maybe you where doing something and you didnt save) but still this game is awesome, i would definitely buy it if they bring things like this in the future. i can see why ghast was saying justplaygaidenbro.

I recently started playing Echoes and I'm nearing the end of the game. So far, it's has been an amazing game and experience. I'm relatively new to the franchise as my first game was Awakening and Fates was my second. But playing through this game has given me a new look to Fire Emblem in general and I'm curious about playing the older games. Also, amazing video Mangs!
Somehow the absence of Weapon Triangle makes this game more interesting.

Galax94cz To put it into perspective using my own experiences: Nearly 50 hours to complete conquest on hard alongside some dlc. I'm about 49 hours or so in Echoes on hard. I still have to beat Duma and chapter 6 dungeon. So all in all its length heavily depends on your play style.

Its been three years since this game came out. My first Fire Emblem. Dear God what a fantastic game for me to start with. This one journey, solidified my love for this franchise.
its one of my favorite FE games that's for sure with 2 of my favorite Lords of FE in it so I agree with it be a great game and I know FE16 Switch is gonna be amazing much more unique FE game as stated from recents interviews especially when the Echoes director is doing the game it restore my hope for the series!

Am I the only one that absolutely ADORES the fact that the anime style they used for the cutscenes just feels so... classic. Like, something from the mid 2000's, and it suits the game's general aesthetics SO WELL.
Even as an 'Awakening Baby', this game is absolutely amazing, and probably goes up as one of my favourite RPGs of all time. Coming from a background of western RPGs, this game still absolutely flourishes with its gripping narrative, tense, addictive, and strategic combat, not to mention it has some of the most gorgeous portrait art I've seen in a video game to date. xD
I swear the voice acting is so good it made the mourning quotes from characters feel so much sadder, ESPECIALLY EST.

1:15 agree with your point except for that the fact that only the side cast who are automatic recruits regularly appear like that that's why you never see kliff or Faye speak in story dialogue but gray and Tobin speak consistently. (Not complaining though those two have some of my favourite dialogue in the game)
I mean, I wouldn't say it's perfect by any means, but the devs did a good job playing the hand they were dealt. They managed to create an extremely polished game that's accessible/appealing to modern fans without just telling Gaiden's story with Awakening/Fates gameplay. While there are certain mechanics that I think show their age I at least respect that the developers aimed to create an updated version of Gaiden from the ground up rather than making a totally different game that tells the same story.
You and Luckycrit convinced me to get this game and Fates after I thought I was done with the series when I got Awakening.
I actually think this will be my favorite Fire Emblem game with the free roaming elements and dungeon exploring.

Coming from someone who started off with Awakening: Echoes is AMAZING! This is the best FE title on the 3DS. Though I have yet to beat the game at the time of this comment, I love what I've experienced: the story, the characters, the world. All of it feels so alive to me and that's something that neither Awakening nor Fates (or any of their DLC) could pull off.
My only complaint is with the aggressive stance enemy units take. I'm fine with it later when units are more defined, but early on, it can be a problem trying to raise up weaker units.
Anyways, great vid and I agree completely; if you love older FE titles, but want an update (graphically, character-wise, etc.), get this game.

Here six years later, playing through it for first time despite preordering it at release. Once I got into it I haven't been able to put it down. Love that it's simpler than newer releases. The outdated mechanics are actually pretty nice.
I started it today and went beat the first chapter in one go! It’s pretty good though the battles in dungeon could be a bit too frequent. Does it get old quick in latter chapters?

I have to agree, Echoes is a brilliant game. It's fun, the combat is engaging, and the dungeon crawling elements made it much more interesting as a whole. One of the details I noticed would be that you can cut grass, and while that may not seem at all interesting, this also occurs on the battlefield with the standard animations. It makes the world seem more real, because that means they're not just in it, but are a part of it.
My biggest complaint isn't really all that big, as it's about the lighting in dungeons, which can be a little much in the brighter rooms.
So yeah, I really like this game, if the 15 hours I had clocked on just two days of having it are anything to say.
Just tried it... love it! It's true, the maps are not very creative, especially after I just played Conquest. But it doesn't matter, those big plains with a few enemies actually give you some time to plan a counter and lure the more far enemies into a high defense unit that will distract them, leaving the enemy main force without their much-needed reinforcements.

I cried from this game. And I don't often do to sad stories. The voice acting was what really got me in a pretty late game moment that just got to me.

At the very end of the game there is some grinding required for the post game content. Besides that I only needed to do a little bit of grinding on alms route at chapter 4. I did the whole thing on classic/hard and to be honest the grinding wasn't necessarily unfun.
So Mangs, apparently the camera follows ranged attacks only if you use them at a certain distance. That includes Magic, Weapons like Javelins, and Arrows.
Only the required characters play a role. The optional ones only get mila/town conversations and a few supports. They really don't matter beyond their recruitment sadly enough.
The only issues I had with the central story was how stupidly naïve celica is and I was a bit annoyed with Mathilda's prison scene with her weak depiction.
The middle single tile river was stupid. The rest of the terrain looked fine.
I agree with the rest though. This game is awesome, even if a bit short.
not only that but Celica is supposed to be a protagonist yet she's not a key character for the plot to be resolved. Even without her Alm can solve everything, he unites Zofia and Rigel by both his actions and blood, he gets the divine Falchion, he has the meaningful interactions and connections to the main antagonists, and he can ultimately defeat Duma with just his team if he had to, he only needs his Falchion, Celica plays no special role aside from opening the east flood gate, and she's supposed to be a protagonist, heck, Alm doesn't even emotionally depend on her or anything, he just goes on about to do what he needs to do with or without her approval, in this dynamic of two protagonists he really doesn't need her for anything more than perhaps wishful thinking of being together if he survives the ordeal.
I would give my left kidney for another fire emblem game with the same art style and mechanics
This video is still doing good work, ever since I finished playing through the routes of the 3 Lords in Three Houses I was considering getting Echoes, and this ended up tipping me over the edge due to how it addressed the gameplay concerns that had me a bit wary. I'm 10 hours into the game now and really liking it!
One of my favorite aspects of the combat animations is when archers draw their bows, you can see their hand shaking as they pull the arrow as far back as it goes. This is particularly notable on a kill shot.
That was a great video! I personally adore Echoes, taken over Awakening and Fates, but might change after I finish Echoes.
I personally started the game on hard mode, beat it once, and have nearly completed a second playthrough. Furthermore, I have still had a lot of fun on the second playthrough. It's hard, but it's not quite Conquest levels of pure insanity (most of the time). The replayability is very real, which is a balance for a hard game I have rarely seen since Radiant Dawn normal mode. Furthermore, the Turnwheel is implemented wonderfully, with upgrades being natural and well-paced. This is an absolutely phenomenal game, up there with the Bravely Default series and other cult classics as a 3DS buy. Actually, scratch that, this is one of about 10 games I think is actually worth buying the 3ds to play if you can only get one game.
Well I do have to do something while waiting for Three Houses, right?

I just beat this game yesterday as of the time I am posting this, and as a relatively new Fire Emblem fan, (Only really played the 3DS Games) Echoes has become my favorite Fire Emblem so far. Mostly because it was the first Fire Emblem game I've played that didn't leave me fatigued about 3/4ths through the game. I had to force myself to finish Fates, (and Awakening to a lesser extent) but Echoes simply never let me put it down! I played on Classic Normal mode and managed to beat the game with little-to-no grinding, just strategy, and without losing a single unit. Mila's turnwheel is awesome as a counter against the sometimes bullshit RNG, although I had a one time case where I used it and it caused the game to actually crash... Regardless, nothing like that ever happened again.
Basically, Echoes is Gaiden but with more character, better graphics, and faster gameplay. I'd say it's the better way to see Valentia, but still holds some of the issues of the original. The maps are still complete ass, Celica and Alm's relationship feels just messy, and Cantors are still annoying. A new thing is the little quake ability shared by like two enemies. It just can cause some annoying turn wheel uses. The Mila's Turnwell is amazing!!! I'd say pick it up, but it isn't a masterpiece like as sold in the video.

Something I feel that no one has noticed about the animations in this game is that just before getting his, some units attempt to dodge, but fail. It genuinely scares me at times, and makes the fights feel more alive. No, this is not just my imagination. I slowed down the fight animations and saw that units do sometimes attempt to dodge before getting hit
Solid video that has made me more likely to get the game.
I still feel like I'll feel a void where the flexibility of units classes was, but it may be partially filled by the third tier classes being pretty cool and the arts.
I really like this game. I have about 54 hours in it and beat the first 5 acts. Right now I’m playing the DLC and disappointed that most of the extra maps don’t have a real story to them. However there are a few good ones mixed in. The main game though is a true gem. I love the art, the story telling the battles. In so many ways this is as good or better then Awakening and miles better then fates which wasn’t bad but is my least favorite of the three 3DS Fire Emblem games. This game is worth a purchase.

From what I heard the director for this game is working on the next major fore emblem title (I hope to god this rumor is true) also I believe they should take some of the mechanics in echoes and implement them for the new FE (weapon arts, three promotions, shields, and honestly milas turnwheel as addresses that many FE players tend to restart a level if one character dies)

Awesome vid, will be showing it to any friends who aren't already about to kill me for how much I've been gushing over this game. My brother too should be playing it (he's started with Awakening and Fates despite me hounding him over the years to play the older games when they were current) but its not the absence of avatars or waifus that's turning him off, but the magic system. I don't think you touched upon it too much in your vid, so is there anything you can say to assuage him about the hp draining mechanics he abhors? I've told him over and over that its hardly noticeable and easily managed, but he's not convinced....
If you enjoy solid writing and cast of characters with some new QoL changes or want to see an updated Gaiden, then this is probably one of the best games for you.
If you're looking for gameplay depth and good map design, you should skip it as you will probably be disappointed.

Unfortunately that's why I still prefer Fates just a smidge. The story is clunky and you have to work to get the characters stories, but the gameplay, strategy elements and choice is so amazing. Here, the opposite is true, just goes to show how far the map design has come I suppose. One of my bigger complaints is the abundance of rout maps, which was a complaint many people had for Awakening that I don't see the fanboys mention about Echoes
mooseyluke I personally didn't find Fates' gameplay all that amazing because pairup felt too good to me. Not as good as in Awakening, but still good enough to make a lot of the game mindless. I think Conquest makes that better though with it's difficulty. On Conquest I agree with what you said.
Harvee™ Generally a lot of my arguments for Fates are from conquest, and I should really learn to stop that. Conquest is so much better than the other two, I have no idea how they did it
mooseyluke Ah okay, that makes sense. I still don't thing CQ's gameplay was better than SoV's, but that's just personal preference. I also tend to like the older games more even though my first game was Awakening. But hey, we all have our biases.
I love this game so much. By far my favorit Fire Emblem. I wish the whole modern series would be more like this than awakening. I hate this dating bullshit and three houses is simply tedious with all that micromanagment.
Oh and by the way, is a game fun and engaging then there is no grind. Grind is more a mindset than a propertie. In all my hours of Echoes there was zero grind for me. How could a game so beautiful and good sounding grindy anyway? By the way; I LOVE the art style, I wish every FE would look like this.
in 2:10, in the theme of characters, it annoys me how they claim how the only way to know the characters was reading their supports is the only way you will know them, when GBA games have done it MUCH WORSE, case in point, Renault, he didn't do anything in the story and his backstory could be easily missed, considering it was at the tail end of the game, and he's isn't the only case, so it bothers me how they get a free pass while the newer games handle supports much better
really love this video, definitely dispels things ign said were bad about echoes and brings to light some niche things i may have brushed over while playing it, such as the fluently done animations
overall i think echoes is a solid entry into the franchise and really brings to light how far fire emblem has came and how it understands its roots

I pre-ordered this game a month before it was released out of really high expectations. Never did they falter, but then I started to feel worried that my buy was too hasty.
However, the game met with my expectations, even passed it. I was really worried about the map design, and while it is still very iffy, I enjoyed most maps in the game because of unit placement and a vast amount of options to tackle them (shoutout to Grieth's Citadel). The voice acting is amazing, with only Clive's falling short in my eyes. They each felt really impactful and real. The support conversations are short and sweet - even Faye's was pretty heartwarming. The writing in the villains are really good, bar for Desaix. Berkut's was especially wonderful.
If you like Fire Emblem, this game is simply a must.
I'm loving Echoes so far, and it's threatening to dethrone Blazing Sword as my favorite Fire Emblem game, something which I never thought would happen. It's just...it's just plain fun. I've probably grinded a bit more than my fair share, but about half of it is unintentional, and I just try to get new units up to speed with the rest of the party. But I can't help it if enemies keep running into my party when I'm moving my other army

One of the lines Genny says was making me think they might be doing a sequel of this. She talks about writing a book based on the adventure they are on, then mentions doing a sequel. It's probably nothing, but you never know.
This is actually my favorite entry in the series. I love the full voice acting, pacing, and the dungeon crawling.
Its 2019. I Just got a 3ds xl though there are few now at gamestop. Typed up the Fire emblem games and narrowed it to this game aside from awakening. I wanna try echoes. Saw many reviews but this video finally made the decision. I'm gonna get this game

After beating Conquest/Revelation, Echoes and now finishing Awakening, I believe Shadow of Valentia is the best Fire emblem game on 3DS
I loved Echoes, I thought it was a beautiful game. I agree with all the points you made, positive and negative. Some people I know said they wish the weapon triangle was in this game but I’m actually really happy it wasn’t, as I feel it would’ve taken away some of the elements that made Gaiden, Gaiden. One of the biggest things that made me love this game was the voice acting. When Alm realizes that he just killed his father, and he screams out in sadness, man I FELT his pain, no other Fire Emblem game made me feel like that. The story is also marvelous, some of the best in the series by far. I’m very happy that the new villains had some really good background and depth to them, because recently the villains have just been bad because why not. If I were to rate this game I would say it’s 9.3/10. The story is great, animation flows, cutscenes are beautiful to watch, and dialogue makes you feel like you are really there listening to an everyday conversation. The maps could use some work and sometimes the enemies can be weird but that is a minor nitpick. The fact that IGN gave this a bad review makes me laugh, “Now move in Fredrick to kill weakened units.”
I would've loved more ost variety, I played the game really fast and finished chapter 5 last week, I say this because after so much game, the last sections where you get to Hrodulf, Berkut and finally Duma are absolute hype thanks to finally having some different map ost and battle ost.
I also don't know how many support conversations there are but I feel it should have a bit more, also, while I like that there's no infinite couple posibilities, in this specific case I didn't really feel for the main protagonists' couple, they just didn't have almost any encounter, though I understand Alm and Celica perhaps went through their childhood and adolescence thinking about each other because they literally had no one else to think about (Celica was alone cause Boey was already going to be with Mae and Alm had Faye but he just didn't see her that way). I felt more chemistry between Alm and Clair than with Celica. Also, for a story having two protagonists you could have just Alm as the main and he would resolve the plot anyways even without Celica, he's the one who unites Zofia and Rigel both by his actions and his blood, he's the one granted the divine Falchion to slay Duma for good, he has the most meaningful interactions with the main antagonists and his connections to some of them, his team has more relevance, chapter 5 was for them in the most part until the very end, not even Celica's team did anything relevant even without her cause they were just relegated to be trapped, I guess having almost 40 characters for chapter 5 was too much to handle for the devs. Alm's team has a better story in my opinion, from villagers to liberators to national heroes all while going beyond their initial expectations and doing their best, all the way to the plot twist of Alm being Rigel's prince and finally uniting Valentia restoring the old continent's glory.
Celica just over-complicated everything and many times believed the clearly dark and evil guys who gave no solid argument nor evidence that they would "help" her and tried to kill her and her teammates many times, so much that Saber got fed up by her at some point, she's not necessary to slay Duma, she didn't even deal with Jedah the antagonist of her route, she did nothing special to aid Alm more than opening the flood gate, that's literally her only big accomplishment, as a protagonist it isn't enough. She was there to play the damsel in distress in the end to get Alm all over her, that's it. Celica's team story?, nothing, basically all her teammates join her cause why not?, that's it, the only ones who truly join her for something else might be her friends boey mae and genny, conrad cause older brother, and valbar that got his revenge and his long wished inner peace, and resolved to help her in exchange, still, only Saber and Conrad have some importance in story cutscenes. They're just there for the sake of being a second protagonist team and they don't even exist until the ending in chapter 5.
You could erase Celica's team and even her from the story, give more developement to Alm's story, and that's it, I liked the two teams idea, but it could've been better excecuted storywise.
For the rest, I don't really have complaints, I have to play the post-end chapter 6 now, I really liked this game, just lacked more music variety for my taste, and if there's Alm-Celica's support conversations in chapter 6, at least from my perspective, it doesn't count, the main story already ended, develop the romantic interest IN the main story in this kind of games, or else it doesn't impact me.
Agreed with this whole video; I have been hyped since this game was announced, but was also skeptical because it was a faithful remake of a dated game, and it would be my first fire emblem game, so I was worried it would be too hard, clunky, shallow story and characters, etc. Decided to go in and buy it the day after it came out, and it's been FANTASTIC, with none of the problems I expected it to have. Please everyone buy this game. It's good for you.

Just picked this up at a retro game store. Didn't have a 3DS till last year and just saw this game for the first time so I had to get it.
Just wanted to ask anyone would be willing to answer, is it even worth it to play Fire Emblem Fates over this or should I play both? I was planning on playing both versions of Fates for both sides of the story but I hear that the game wasnt as good as hoped. Im currently still playing Awakening and loving it so far so I want some other opinions on which game I should play after I finish Awakening (My first Fire Emblem game).
Well said Mangs. I really hope this game does well. I'd like to see other Echoes games in the form of other remakes. Awakenings is my first Fire Emblem game and I'd like to play older games with the Echoes treatment.
