You should see them live. I was fortunate enough to see them on the recent Seishun Tour on their only Canadian stop in Toronto, and man these girls are absolutely top 10% of live acts. 4 Japanese girls that can barely speak English and yet they had ever single person in that crowd fully engaged. They are so on point. Even live they don't miss a facial expression or finger movement, while singing live, and interacting with the audience. These girls love performing, and they look right at the audience, they waive and high five fans, and Suzuka does her crazy Rock Star Suzuka stuff jumping off stage and going out into the crowd. But when Suzuka has everyone's attention in the middle of the crowd, Kanon, Mizyu, and Rin are still performing while posing for photos, slapping hands, and interacting with fans at the front at the same time. There is no weak link in this group, all 4 are just so good individually and the fact that they've been together for around 8 years as a group and able to play off one another so perfectly. After all the time they've been together they still look like they are having the time of their lives every moment on stage. I'd suggest anyone fortunate enough to get tickets to one of their shows, just go. They really are masters at their craft and so much fun to see live.

Yes, AG's dance practice / choreography videos are one-take, so we can watch them as if they are live. I like them too.
The Japanese word 'giri giri' (ギリギリ) is an onomatopoeic word (we have really many onomatopoeic words in Japanese) and is useful in many different ways. For example, just in time, barely, the last minute, close, make it, be on the edge of, etc.
I guess the lyrics are pop but ambiguous, and difficult to interpret. But I believe AG expresses the unstable feelings of young people 'on the edge'. Or, let's get out of 'on the edge'! I feel like they're singing about it. But I just don't know that 'skirt-flips', lol. I actually like AG's 'The Edge' and 'Woo goo' too like being similar with this song.

I agree with you, Ryan. As someone who is very critical (probably a bit too much) on a lot of music production and generally prefers heavier music by musicians who play their instruments, I do enjoy them quite a bit. I have said this before in comment sections but while I would probably not listen to their music that much in my own time, I do enjoy these choreography videos and I would gladly buy a live Blu-ray by them. I don't know how they do it, because I am generally not that much into watching people dance, but they typically are able to grab my attention and are probably the only alt-idol/idol group (I think we can catalogue them as that) that I have seen who can do so. Kudos to them.

fyi, atarashii gakko is "dance and vocal unit/group". that what they want us to call them (i read it from their official website). and that is how japanese media call them.

Thank you very much! That's fine with me. I would consider them mostly a dance group anyway and I don't know that much about Idol and J-Pop music in general. So I am not going to argue with what the marketing people behind them are calling them.

I've watched the Dance Practice version of this song... far too many times. :P I don't know why they make me smile so much, but they do. Not my kind of music at all, usually. Have you watched "SEISHUN WO KIRISAKU HADO"? Thanks for the reaction, Ryan! They are freakin' cool!

In addition to the catchy tunes, many of the lyrics contain important social commentary. In this song they list several indignities suffered by young people in Japanese society, so why try - doing just enough is just right. In one line she says let’s get away from this mess, let’s hop on the Yamanote line. The Yamanote just loops around Tokyo, it is the only line that you cannot get away. Performing in a company office setting says you can look forward to this feeling of futility for the rest of your life.

@RyanMear You can't always understand the humor and satire in many of Atarashii Gakko's songs by simply turning on the subtitles. Atarashii Gakko are grown women pretending to be middle school students often to make cutting comentary on Japanese society. If you read the translation for Otona Blue, for example, you would probably interpret the song as a simple coming of age story. It is a coming of age story, but coming of age in a society where the age of consent is 13, where one of the most popular men's magazines is essentially playboy with models in school uniforms, where middle age men on the train don't hesitate to open manga filled with graphic depictions of schoolgirls being raped, where Joshi Kousei cafes and Papakatsu Apps are accepted vehicles for child prostitution. I believe Otona Blue is about schoolgirls who understand the power they hold over men in such a society. The very first line Suzuka sings "I understand what you want, don't I". A common translation for another line is "I've yet to bloom though I still pretend to" but I think a more accurate reading should be the other way "I remain an innocent bud though I know how to be a woman". So it's not about schoolgirls frustrated because they don't know how to act mature, it's about schoolgirls who know how to act more childish to seduce "soft" Japanese men.

I love their choreography. With the success Avantgardey had on AGT I’m sure they would be great as well.

AG would never or could do AGT. They have done all their own choreo for 8+ years and actually are contracted out to create performances for other artists. In fact, Avantgardey gave a shout out to AG choreo during the finals. So cool. AG is a awesome.
