    Thanks for this. I finally understand why my routes cock-up after turning off my Garmin mid-route!

    Hi Andy. Thanks for the Basecamp videos. Very well done and although I've only just started out with a Garmin unit and need to create my own routes, your videos of using Basecamp have convinced me to try using this first. I've seen and heard many stories of how bad Basecamp is and only one mate saying that he watched some videos and has now got a much better understanding of how to use it so thanks to you, I'm a convert.
    Cheers👍

    This is great guidance for the base camp software and easily the most clear understanding I’ve come across on TH-cam. Any chance of a piece on trip planning?

    Great series of videos John. Really helped me get my head around Basecamp. Finding Basecamp so much more useful. Any plans to look at different maps and exporting these to devices?

    Hi John. Great Video thanks. at time point 12:38 you change the route from direct to motorcycling and the route adjust itself so that it aligned to the track. mine does not do that any advise please

    • @jtchivers

      That suggests the particular map you have installed doesn't have the routing information available or the activity profile you're using isn't set up correctly. Try alternative activity profiles (e.g. Driving). If that still doesn't work, the map is definitely the issue. Ensure you have a valid map installed. May be worth using Map Install to update your map. If it's not a standard Garmin map, ensure the one you're using (e.g. Open Street Map) has routing information included.
      I'm assuming you are using Garmin maps, but if not, you need to ensure the map you have installed has the routing information included (some don't).

    At 10:13 when I select 'create route from track', I don't get the pop up giving me the track conversion options, it just goes ahead and creates the route without letting me choose the number of points, any idea why?

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Make sure your activity profile is set to Direct. Explanation is at 7:47. If you don't have the activity profile set to Direct, you won't be prompted.

    Hi John, thank the biking gods for these videos. shame you did not list them as pt1 etc for ease of use.

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Greg! They're in separate parts because people may only be interested in one aspect and not necessarily in an order and I didn't want to cause myself issues if I added an intermediate one later.
      There is a playlist however, with them in a logical order: th-cam.com/play/PLO1PMleWvBbLRwQleXtj4F1uYhmSy-cFH.html

    my Garmin Zumo 396 will only allow 39 points per route. I imported a route and the garmin broke it up into 14 different routes.

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  ปีที่แล้ว

      What kind of points? Waypoints, via points, or shaping points?

    • @redhytech
      @redhytech ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jtchivers don't know. the piece of shit said it only allows 39 points. i set them at 20 - 35 and it works. i leave room for a few extra if needed

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redhytech What happens when you import it into Basecamp? Many people plan routes wrongly, stuffing them with waypoints instead of using via and shaping points and it sounds like that's your issue, but this video relates to Basecamp. Some units will limit waypoints and I don't know the source of your route (is it from a Garmin system?) but in any event, importing it into Basecamp and following my instructions will fix your issue.

    • @redhytech
      @redhytech ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jtchivers I found a way to import a google route into BaseCamp with very little issues. I export the route to a KML file. import it into BaseCamp as a TRACK. convert that into a DIRECT route. set my points to around 25 or so. switch that to a car or motorcycle route. NOT perfect but it worked. car route will keep you on a more direct route where as the motorcycle route will have you in areas you might not want to be.

    Is there a way to change the start and end points in a route, once is calculated?

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can move any points at any time, but you need to recalculate the route when you change one. If you are using any activity profile other than Direct, the route will be recalculated automatically, once you've moved a point.

    • @kactusrcvideos
      @kactusrcvideos 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Chivers thanks for the reply. No matter what I did when I moved the start point it created an unwanted route. I suppose because I had it in utv profile. I didn’t realized that anything other than direct will have that effect. I had to split the track in 3 segments then I was able to do it. Then join tracks and create route from it. Was a royal pain.
