    Great video.... I like the quick no nonsense explanations that go with it. I had no idea about the driving and direct calculations

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Michael. Having worked with Basecamp a bit more since this video I'd recommend you always use the direct activity profile first to create via points before you switch to the driving profile. If you create a route directly from the track without going via the direct method it'll create a route with no intermediate via points. The route will still work but if you drive off the route or take a wrong turn it will recalculate and with no via points the recalculated route will be directly to the end point. It'll discard the rest of the route. There are some more notes about it in this video here. th-cam.com/video/bpDYg580zr4/w-d-xo.html

      @@JosephByrne OUTSTANDINGLY HELPFUL !!!! ..... I converted my track successfully using direct as you showed... I did my edits, but I found when changing it to the "Driving" profile it still did some odd routing on a few occasions. by deleting a few shaping points (letting it re-calculate after each) did finally fix it.
      Do you have any tips for checking the final calculated "driving" route against the tuned "direct" route?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichaelGreenham Hi Michael. So there are a couple of things you can do. Firstly right click on the *Direct* route and click *Duplicate.* This will create a duplicate of the route. Rename the duplicated route and then change the activity profile to driving and also change the colour. Now you'll be able to see the direct profile route and the driving profile route relative to one another. Depending on how much time you have and how determined / concerned you are to make sure the route is perfect you can also do the following on the device. 1. Transfer the calculated route to the device. 2. Transfer the original track to the device. On the device go to *Apps --> Tracks --> Top left menu --> Import.* Select the track you sent to the device and import it. Next click on the track, click on the spanner on the top left and in the menu that opens check *Show on map.* The track will now be permanently displayed on the map. Next to go *Apps --> Trip Planner* and select the corresponding route and click *map.* You'll now be able to see the trace of the route and the trace of the original track on your device. From here you can compare them to see if they match exactly. If they don't you can make further changes in basecamp. If you want to take it even further than do the following. Go to *Settings --> Navigation --> GPS simulator.* Make sure *GPS Simulator* is checked. Next to go *Apps --> Trip Planner* click on the route and click *Go.* Choose the end point from the list of alerting via points and click *OK.* The unit will now simulate navigating the route from the start point to the end point. On the route map you'll be able to see the track on the screen. You can sit though and watch this if you want, or you can also click the top centre of the screen where the next direction is displayed, then click the menu button on the top left and click *map.* This will show you a view of the currently active route that is being simulated and on this view you'll also see the original track. You can zoom in and out using the plus and minus symbols at the top of the screen. Using these methods you can check that the route is correct and will navigate correctly before you get into the field. Perhaps doing all of that is overkill but if it's an important route for a holiday or a group ride, there are lots of ways to check that it's as good as it can be well in advance. I'll make a video of all this soon.

      @@JosephByrne Brilliant.. In most cases I don't need to be EXACT, but in this case it did the oddest weaving up and down various streets, around blocks and u turns... I just kept deleting shaping points and it would recalculate. Now however this newly created and tuned route is HUNG in my Garmin Zumo 396. It asks to import the new route like all the routes I had in Basecamp. But it won't import. It just says "import failed" I can't seem to now get rid of this file and try again. I've reset the unit, it still hung in the import menu... To make matter worse Garmin Chat and email pages don't seem to like either my Chrome or IE..

    IS it possible to track multiple days of hiking into one route?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The easiest way to do it is to put all of the tracks in the same list then select the tracks in the order you want to join them using *Ctrl Left Click.* When all the required tracks are selected right click and choose *Join the Selected Tracks.* This opens a window showing the tracks and the order they will be joined. If you look at the map it will also show a preview of how the tracks will fit together. If the order is incorrect you can change it in this window. When you are happy with the order click *OK* and it will create a new track from the combined tracks. The final window says *A new track has been created. Would you like to delete the original tracks?* Click *Yes* to delete the source tracks and click *No* to keep them. The process is the same for combining routes. If you have issues contact me and we can set up a screen share or something to look at it.

    I am very new to this. I followed your video on creating a route. Since the area where I created it is 345mi from my house I can't test it. When I start the route though, it gives me direction from my current location. Once I arrive on the starting point of my custom route will it guide me along my route then? Edit: figured it out. Had wrong next destination set. Thanks for great video

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anytime. Yes when simulating riding the route the way it works is when you choose a start point from the list of alerting via points it places the vehicle at the previous via point. If you choose the first via point it places the vehicle at its last known location. So ideally choose the 2nd alerting via point on your list as the start point when simulating riding the route. Took me a while to figure our the logic the first time.

    • @LifeofAedan
      @LifeofAedan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JosephByrne Weird, but yes that def fixed it. For me it is actually the first I think because it adds a "1" to the second point so it is first on the list.

      @@LifeofAedan Yes. I wish they would have an option to simulate riding the route from the start so we didn't have to do all of this figuring out. It's been like this for about 10 years though so I don't see them changing it.

    It seems that when you convert a track to a route, Garmin adds those two waypoints as start and finish points. You deleted those in this video. Does that affect the route in any way?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. Any route needs a minimum of 2 via points. The start point and end point in the list of via points are always alerting via points. If you delete the start or end via point the via point that is next in the list becomes the start or end point.

    Finding your videos very helpful. I am a new base camp/gps user. Use it mainly for motorcycling. One question for you, when I try to create a route on base camp, the software tells me I need to connect my Garmin to the PC and use its map. I can see a map on the PC but there is no detail until I connect the Garmin. Do I have to buy a map for base camp for the region I am riding in (mid Atlantic US) so I don't have to connect the Garmin? I thought I had free maps. Any help is appreciated. I did everything you did created a track, modified it and created a route with no issue. However my problem is when I try to send it to my Garmin it doesn't show up. The only time it will appear is if I reduce the number of points substantially, which then throws my route off. I'm trying to use it for a snow plowing route so detailed routes that are followed exactly are needed. Any ideas? Thanks.

    • @danlux4954
      @danlux4954 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Pilat which Garmin gps do you have? That might be what the problem is, gps only allows routes with so many points or memory is full.

    • @robertpilat1867
      @robertpilat1867 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danlux4954 Thanks for the reply, but I did end up figuring out how develop a route as I desired. Basically I set a number of waypoints along the route I wanted our snow plows to take, and then converted most of them to shapepoints, however some were left as waypoints. Because the route would travel down the same street/overlap at times, the Garmin would get confused as to where it was in the route. By segmenting the routes with waypoints so there was not an overlap it alleviated the issue. To the driver it looks like it is one continuous route, however it is made up of several segments.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two ways, to access them go to *Apps --> Trip Planner --> Click the route.* Next click on the three bar menu on the top left and click *Down Arrow --> Share.* From here you can share via Bluetooth (where the device will search for devices in the vicinity) or Memory Card where the device will write the route to the SD card. From there you need to turn off the device, remove the battery, remove the SD card, give the SD card to your friend, have them insert the SD card then turn on their device. The device should prompt them to import the route from the SD card. If it doesn't then go to, *Apps --> Trip Planner ---> Three Bar menu --> Import.* Check the box next to the route you want to import and click *Import.*

    When I try this, the route generated contains too many shaping points (and only two via points - start and ene) and will not load into my Garmin Nav VI. The maximum number of shaping points between via points (for my device) is 125 points. Seems a show stopper.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jump to 5:32 in the video. Before you convert your Track to a Route, choose the *Direct* activity profile then when you chose *Create Route* set the number of points to 50. When the route is created it'll have 50 via points. Next change the activity profile to *Driving* and recalculate the route. It'll recalculate with 50 via points.

      @@JosephByrne Got it! And thanks for your help. As suggested, I re-watched the original video again and that helped. By trial and error, I have determined that the maximum number of shaping points allowed on my BMW/Garmin Nav VI is between 250 pts (works) and 500 pts (does not work). But for tomorrow's route (I am riding through South America and am generating a new route almost daily) I found that the route Basecamp generated with 250pts did not follow the Google generated track once it got into the city, but the 500pts route did. I then read in the Nav VI manual that the limit on shaping points is a limit on the # of points between via points. So I went back to the 500pt route in Basecamp, and made every ~190th point a via point ("Alert on Arival"), then re-loaded it to the Nav VI, and that worked!
      I figured out early on that the # of points was the issue when transferring routes to the Nav VI, and I could generate routes using fewer points, but I was using "direct" mode, and the routes were pretty useless (connect the dots, not following the road). What I learned from you was the trick to re-calculate the route using "Driving" mode before transferring to the NAV. That,and the trick I now know (using via points) to use more points if needed to follow the track in complicated city routes, have me pretty satisfied. But it really should not be this hard!

    do you know if I can add a track to a trip? I am trying to produce a trip where I want to add a track that is already downloaded. I dont want to convert it to a route....

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok so if I've interpreted this correctly you want to add a track you've downloaded to an existing route. So maybe you've plotted a route to the mountains ( call that *Route 1* ) , then you want to pick up the downloaded route ( *Route 2* ) and navigate through the mountains, then return to a route you've plotted ( *Route 3* ) to ride away from the mountains. In order to do that you will need to convert the track you've downloaded to a route in order to make it navigable on the device. Use the procedure in this video to do that. Next create a new list in Basecamp and add all 3 routes to the list. Click on the list and the 3 routes should appear at the bottom left of the screen. Click on *Route 1* and then press *CTRL+A* to select all of the routes. (You can also hold *CTRL* and click each route to select it). Right click on one of the selected routes and click *Join the selected routes.* This opens a dialogue box where you can select the order the routes will be joined. Make sure they are in the correct order (it will be visualised on the map too) then click *OK.* A dialogue box will appear advising a new joined route has been created, Would you like to delete the original routes? I'd advise clicking *No* so that the original routes remain in case you want to use them for something else. The new combined route will appear in the current list on the bottom left of the screen. It'll have a generic name (such as the road it starts and finishes on) right click on it to rename it then right click *Send to* choose your device from the list and click *OK.* Then you should be all set. I will try and make a video of this soon. If it's not working contact me and we can do a screen share or something to get you on the road.

    Can someone use Basecamp without having a Garmin? I'm trying to share my routes with friends who do not have Garmins. They can download Basecamp, but get some error message, "Basecamp needs detailed maps to find the best route. Connect a Garmin device with detailed maps or you can purchase detailed maps." Sounds as if they have to purchase maps. Can I share routes with them without them having maps?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need to have a Garmin device to use Basecamp. The error message refers to the map Basecamp is using. When you download and install Basecamp it comes with a really basic map with almost no detail. This enables you to launch the program but is pretty useless for route planning as it doesn't contain any roads other than major highways. To get a detailed map you need to either plug a Garmin Device in (It will load the map from the device) or purchase one. If your friends install Basecamp and don't have the detailed map you can still send your routes to them and they will display correctly but the roads wont' show up. If they want to see the roads they can click View --> Google Earth --> Selected Items and the route will show up in Google Earth.
      Alternatively you can put your routes into a list in Basecamp and Chose File --> Export. Save the list as a GPX and send that to your friends. Upon receipt of your files your friends can go to www.google.com/maps/d/ Create a new map and choose Untitled Layer --> Import. Then select the GPX file you sent to them. This will import the routes and they will display on the correct roads in Google maps.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can do that. First you need use the procedure in this video to create 3 separate routes one at a time. Next select the routes, you can do this by either using *Ctrl + Left Click* on items in the list or by using *Shift + Left Click* to select the routes on the map. Next right click on one of the routes either on the map or in the list view and click *Join selected routes.* A dialogue box will appear where you can choose the order you want the routes to go in using the up and down arrows. When you are happy with the order click *OK.* Finally a dialogue box will appear noting, *A new joined route has been created, Would you like to delete the original routes?* From here you can click *Yes* to delete the original routes or *No* to keep them. I'd always keep them as you might want to do something with them individually later and it's easy to delete them if you want to. Just select them in the list and press *Delete.*

      I will try it today, seems simple... I have done a few things before and I remember it asks about something about dots or point (a fixed number to the whole route or automatic). I ride a bicycle (enduro and downhill), what do you recommend? I think that amount of "dots" distribute homogeneously if I set a fixed amount of dots, and the "automatic" setting would distribute it by some algorithm, this algorithm will change if I set the type like "mountain bike" or "hicking"? The idea es to have the route clear enough because in some places it is not clear the path or trail I have to follow, especially if I'm riding over rocks, there are no maps of the path or the trail, just a few people ride and most of the do hiking (Chile). What its your opinion about it? Fixed number of dots so each dot is every 2 meters or chose hiking? Anyway, I will make some tests, because I'm using a Garmin Edge 520, it has a limited amount of memory available.... Again thanks a lot!!

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you set the number of points to be automatic it usually plots way too many. The best way to figure out a number of points is to determine how often you want the route to be shaped and work it out from the distance. So say you are mountain biking and your route is 10KM long and you'd like it to be shaped every 50 meters. Just do the calculation, 10,000/50= 200 points. That should work out fine. For something like motorcycling on a road shaping points every 50 meters is not necessary, every kilometer or mile is fine. Experiment and see what works best but just keep in mind how often you'd want a shaping point on the route and then calculate the number of points from that.

You can also delete them directly from the device by finding them in trip planner then clicking the context menu and selecting *Delete.* If you completely reset the device it should also clear the internal memory.

      @@JosephByrne Thanks for the quick reply, I'm on Windows and that is exactly how I make changes, not a big deal ! Instead of split tool I just shift + click to select whatever range of points I want and cut them to new tracks.
      Maybe those handy buttons are not on my North American version or something.

      @@rdyjur Apologies. You can find all the tools on the Windows Version. To view them go to *View --> Toolbars --> Edit Features* and then it will appear. The tools should also all be available on the *Tools* menu. You can also just press *E* when you are on the map and it'll shift to the erase tool and X for the divide tool. Then you should be all set. Just for context, the Mac version already has the toolbar set up but doesn't have all of the tools (I mean in the package, not just the buttons). The Windows version has all the tools but they are hidden. I'll make a video about the Windows interface soon and how I've set mine up. I've decided to get the channel moving again and have done a ton of research on Basecamp and have cracked it.

      I believe all devices keep a track of where they have been. To navigate routes planned in Basecamp you need a device with the trip planner app. You can check the device specifications for this on the Garmin website.

    By far this is the best video Basecamp tutorial. You explain that changing activity helps in the track to the route but what about when you import the route to your Garmin and it is set for Motorcycle will it change how it follows the route?

      Hi Foster. If the profile on basecamp is set to Driving and on the Garmin it is set to something else (such as motorcycling) then it may change the route for example if you plotted a route in Basecamp that went down a highway and on your device you choose a navigation profile that has highways checked as an avoidance then it can go wrong. This video here from Parker Explains how to set it up so that it is optimal th-cam.com/video/kfZvZXzJI5s/w-d-xo.htmlm2s
