    By far, the most realistic portrayal of the first responders to 9/11. 'Third Watch' was one of the only shows that truly showed how first responders reacted.

      3rd Watch used real NYPD and FDNY staff as extras to the cast and as set crew. There was one firehouse in particular they were tangled in with and iirc they lost 5 guys on 9/11. The entire production felt that screwing up or ignoring what happened would be a slap in the face to the memories of the fallen.

      The show following the end season of third watch witch was rescue me I felt also portrayed the PTSD aftermath of 9/11.

      Some of the lights they used to illuminate Ground Zero those first few nights when they were trying to rescue people from the rubble were the TV production lights from Third Watch. The show had worked closely with NYPD and FDNY, and they were just starting production on the season when the attacks happened.

    I haven't seen this in almost 20 years, and it still makes me cry.
    The entire week leading up to 9/11 was really hard for my family and I. My Grandfather was in the hospital, dying of lung cancer. On Sept 9th, 2001 we said goodbye. That was 3 days after my Moms birthday, the day of his Sisters birthday (My great-aunt) and just 2 days before 9/11.
    I had to go back to work the night of the 10th. I worked graveyard at an airport. Broke, no car, I would take the bus or a cab if I could afford it. I got into a cab and the driver, a New Yorker asked if I heard about a plane hitting the world trade. I thought it was a small plane. Something like a Cessna. I was then informed it was a Airliner.
    I made it home, walked in the door and the 2nd plane had hit. I stood there in utter disbelief. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
    Shows like this reminded me of what my Grandpa and so many of our friends were really like. He was a career FF. 26 years on the job. I have no doubts in my mind, that had he been healthy, and in NY he would have beat feet down to the closest station house and asked what he could do to help. First Responders are built different. Others before self. Sleep deprived, hungry, scared, sad - doesn't matter. They'll push through it all.

    Not only did they run to help as many people as possible, they ran in again when the first building collapsed. The most heroic and bravest thing I've ever seen. People called non-stop at the fire departments asking to go to the place and help, these people are amazing..

    • @dragondancer1814

      Not just there-I live in western Maryland, and our own firehouse was literally two weeks away from being deployed to go up there and help with rescues after 9/11 when they switched into recovery mode and cancelled our assignment. Any time something happens with a firehouse, you'll see departments from all over wanting to help out. The fire service is basically not unlike a huge, extended family, and it's a case of "Pinch me, you pinch us all" when tragedy strikes.

      Dude not that it's on the same level but when I worked at the jail we had just clocked out and were getting changed in the locker room.when a massive fight broke out. A back up call when out to the whole jail and everyone including our shift who were in normal.civilian clothes and not clocked ran in with everyone else. It's just a sense of duty you feel, especially when lives are at stake.

    I was 14 when 9/11 happened. Anyone over ten years old that day I feel remembers where they were/what they felt/etc.
    I remember being in my preteens when Third Watch aired, and I grew up with EMS parents and all of our friends were EMS, I knew I wanted to be a firefighter paramedic when I grew up at six years old.
    This show was such a core memory for me, still binge watch it to this day at least once or twice a year. I did become a medic and worked steadily on a ambulance for 10+ years.
    Thank you heroes in real life and thank you forever to this shows amazing cast and crew for portraying EMS in not only this moment in history but in so many other moments that happen within EMS so absolutely flawless.

    This episode was probably the realist portrayal of 9/11 shown in any emergency show. The true credit goes to the incredibly brave, selfless men and women who both worked that day and the days, months and years after, but Third Watch did manage to achieve some semblance of what that day was like.
    I still remember being pulled into a school assembly to have what was happening "explained" and then waiting for my mom to come pick me up.
    I remember dropping my daddy off as close as possible to NYC (we lived in CT) and not seeing him for days as he was busy working (he is an Orthopedic Surgeon) and then seeing him break down with my mom once he finally came home simply to shower and change before going back.
    It still haunts him to this day and he wasn't even on the front line.
    It still haunts me to this day and I was only seven at the time. I'm now a paramedic and I can't even imagine what I would do in a situation like this, so I thank God for all of the brave men and women, and pray that all of those innocent victims rest in peace.

    • @DorvellTStewart
      @DorvellTStewart 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The reason third watch handled it so well was because unlike the other shows that addressed it, third watch worked directly with the NYPD and FDNY to know how to accurately portray those brave men and women as well as their struggles, both on and off the job. Season three of third watch, which took place during and after 9/11 is by far my favorite season of the six because of how well they handled it; they sure didn't hold back!

    • @SaraNightfire1
      @SaraNightfire1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blue Bloods did a great realistic simulation of what it's like. They didn't touch 9/11 except at the end when the whole thing was over, but the scenes in the episode are so powerful to watch. Especially the end.

    • @JonTron11
      @JonTron11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another reason is because they used real FDNY firefighters, some of whom died during the attacks. They took great pains to accurately portray what happened as a way to honour them. There's a reason some characters do not appear after the 9/11 episode. And the names Jimmy engraves in the plaque he makes are real firefighters p/ characters who died.

    Just finished in Tobi the 6 seasons, is the best tv show on cops,paramedics, firemen.
    The episode of the day before and after 9/11 was the tops, and the episode to honor all that were present at the towers was emotional.

    Watching this scene shaking with the memories of that fateful day, tears running down my cheeks.
    Third Watch captured it brilliantly, we knew what lied ahead for the brave Women and Men as they rode towards the WTC.
    In California on that morning I was working at an answering service, the company had clients in New York, I answered one of them, and the gentleman on the other end asked if I had heard the news, said a plane flew into a building,took his message for client and disconnected.
    Thought to myself, maybe a Cessna out of range or something like that, man on telephone did not elaborate, don't think he knew the whole tragedy at that point.
    By the time I was off (6am PST) while riding on the bus with big shades on, I listened with headphones my walkman,every single station was broadcasting ,no music anywhere, as I listened, tears came out from under my shades, remember looking at a person across from me, thinking they don't have any idea of what was happening on American soil at that moment.
    Did not sleep well that day before going to work (graveyard shift)
    That night walking to bus stop, eerie looking up into the absolute silence of the empty sky.
    Never Forget. ..Sept.11th.

      Chicago Fire is very good in it's own way. Third Watch is excellent in its own way too,its not fair too compare I think. Though I do like Third Watch better,I don't hate Chicago Fire. Third Watch resonates more I think because they had this giant tragedy happen that directly affected the show in ways that no one could have predicted. I seriously hope Chicago never has to deal with that type of event.

      They got close with language and adult content but that show was largely about who was sleeping with who and listening to Denis Leary tell people to kiss his white Irish ass fifteen times an episode, which got tiring. Third Watch had more depth in the writing than Rescue Me. It had better character development and more interesting stories too. I'm actually rewatching Third Watch with my gf and she loves it. I remember after my husband and I got off work that morning (security roadblocks at an old Army base that was being converted to civilian use), we went straight to the firehouse (Maryland's governor had ordered all emergency services personnel to report to their stations). All of us were sitting three and four deep on the couches in the ready room watching the news broadcasts, and the only time anybody moved was to hit the remote. Even now, fifteen years later, I still feel the shock and numbness that I did that day watching the horror of what had happened and not knowing if my family was all right (parents just outside DC, sister in Pittsburgh, cousin in NYC).

    There are some parts missed:
    Bosco is at a girl's apartment (far from the WTC site), a loud rumble is heard, Bosco asks if planes always fly low around there.
    Faith and Fred are in the Subway, the Subway suddenly stops, and all the lights are turned off.

    • @SaraNightfire1
      @SaraNightfire1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He asks what it was, in that area it's illegal to fly planes or any large aircraft. It's considered a severe risk and a no-fly zone, even before 9/11. Especially since he was a cop he had a feeling something was severely wrong. Bosco was very perceptive in the show and picked up on a lot of things other people would miss.

Thank God that was squashed immediately, because there’s no way they could’ve re-created that; also, what they ended up doing was any and everything that needed to be done.

    There was another episode plot that was very similar to what firefighters went through when the Worcester Six were killed in the cold storage building fire in 1999.

I got loaded up the night before in New Hampshire and stopped for the night at the Vince Lombardi Travel Plaza near Hackensack NJ. I woke up just as the news was breaking about the first tower being hit. I had a TV in my sleeper and a coffee maker. I got up, turned on my TV, saw the screen and thought THAT looks like a great movie. Those special effects look so REAL. I remember making my coffee, and then as I was waking, realizing quickly it was real. That point was driven home to me when the second plane hit. It was at that point that I opened up the curtain between the sleeper and the cap and out the windshield, I could see smoke.

      Must've been harder, especially when the towers collapsed. At least as a cop's fiancee you hope there's a chance... A firefighter who runs in to rescue people like in the towers... It's more brutal. Especially when they run back after the first collapsed.
      I can't even picture how hard it was for her to do that scene.

    i was a third year nurse student in London, during 7/7.
    i reckon what lot of people forget, and what many first-responders remember is both 9/11 and 7/7 attacks happened during the morning rush hour. usually the same time USA and UK emergency services have their shift change.
    this is the only show to show that A LOT of the nightshift stayed on, during the chaos of those mornings.
    i know it happened on 9/11 and i witnessed it first hand on 7/7. in the end we had to shoo them home, to get some sleep to come back that night.
    no UK first responders died on 7/7.
    i will stand with FDNY and EMS across the USA forever.

      My husband and I were working security roadblocks at a decommissioned army base that was being converted to civilian use on 9/11. It became chaos after we started hearing the news reports because the military personnel still living there got reactivated and work at the dig site (recovering and detonating buried ordnance) came to a halt as everybody listened to the radio and realized what was going on.
      Needless to say, our workday was abruptly cut short. We headed back to the security office to give our boss a SITREP, and on the way there the Maryland governor ordered all emergency services personnel to report to their stations. Since we were both volunteer firefighters at the time, that meant us too. Our boss tried to order us to another security site (power plant on the river), and when we told him the governor’s orders he immediately said “Well, what are you still standing there for? Get the hell outta here!”
      At the firehouse, everybody was just piled three deep in the ready room watching the news, and the only time anybody moved for hours was to hit the clicker for the TV. It was eerie!
      Three days later, my husband and I were at Sheetz getting provisions for a midnight shift at the power plant. He was inside getting coffee and I was out at the car listening to the radio when Don Henley’s song “New York Minute” came on with audio snippets of news broadcasts from that day mixed in. That did it-I was in the parking lot, in uniform, and I was freaking BAWLING-to hell with professional dignity!
      It’s been 23 years since 9/11, and I still can’t hear that song without it taking me back to that day. May we NEVER forget!

    Wow…. When that "knot in your gut" Music drops @1:01 , @1:43 - @2:17 and towards the end of this clip… mmm mmm mmm…🚨🙏🚨 The Goosebumps I get EVERYTIME watching this clip as a First Responder…. I think they portrayed "that look" so perfectly because I truly understand that look, As do all First Responders do. When those bells, and multiple alarm tones start flying in practically all at the same time as you and your partner exchange "that look" for those split seconds before you put the pedal to the metal and respond to the direction that everyone is running away from, and as you're already starting to scramble, those multiple calls start pouring in, and you hear the job type changing multiple times before you get there all Indicating that something major is happening and numerous people are hurt and panicking and really need you RIGHT NOW…. It's a feeling you can't fully described other than actually experiencing it as a first responder and I think that this clip and this show in general picked it up perfectly. God bless this phenomenal show that should have never ended and God bless all my brothers and sisters that didn't make it out that day… 🙏🚨🚒🚓🚑🚨🙏

      News reporters are practically trained at the start to remain neutral, having an upset journalist along with a very frantic mother is enough for a clue that something bad is happening in New York. Not including the tone of voice. I like they do this in complete silence, just showing the reactions to what is going on. People actually bashed BBC for their lack of reaction to 9/11 since the journalists there had no real idea the impact of what was going on while the U.S. was flipping out.

      Third Watch was filmed in NYC and had background shots of the WTC from dozens of angles. When they did this episode, they picked locations where they had footage of the Towers in one piece and digitally edited the original footage to the actors' new performances so it appeared to be, as the title of the episode said "September 10th."

      That’s how 9/11 unfolded. I was 13 years old in 8th grade. I remember it like it was yesterday.
      It was on a Tuesday morning. It was a typical day. Very beautiful. Most of the country had fair, beautiful weather. It was about time for the weather to begin its transition to Fall from Summer.
      It was boring. But I also had intuition telling me something was wrong between 8:30am and 9:00am on my first class which was PE. Shrugged it off and went about the rest of gym class.
      The events began to unfold as the day progressed.

    • @SaraNightfire1
      @SaraNightfire1 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s actually a documentary about juvenile firefighters that was filmed starting a month before 9/11.
      The filmmakers said a few days before the attack they were getting a lot of footage of the interior of the firehouse because very little was happening and wasn’t enough to record.
      The captain told them that it’s always so calm and quiet before something big happens.
      Two days before the attack a fire took one of the lives of the firefighters and they thought that was it.
      They were stunned a few days later.

      Actually, many jurisdictions have banned the practice of riding on the backs of fire engines because of the risk of falling off and getting killed in the fall or by other traffic has increased dramatically as speed limits have gone up. The next county over from us banned it in 1987 or thereabouts because of a firefighter getting killed after the engine went around a corner and she fell off due to the centrifugal force causing her to lose her grip. Others followed suit before or at the same time, if not sooner. I myself have only done so once, and that was on a mountain fire call in the next county where the mini-pumper was only going about 5 miles an hour up this crazy gravel fire road, and believe me when I tell you it's not as fun as it looks! Even with a safety harness, I was worried about losing my grip or getting bounced off when we hit a rock or a rut in the road due to the angle of the road going up. Going back down was WAY more fun because all we had to worry about was smacking into the back of the hose bed and the guys I was riding with were treating it like they were riding a mechanical bull or something. That was over 15 years ago, and I haven't done it since. It's just as well-now that we've got a ton of equipment on the back, there's nowhere for us to grab anyway.
