    I just found out today that dwarf sea horses were a thing and oh god. they're amazing. i had no idea sea horses could come so small (and live in such a small tank, while still having so many!). i don't think i have a regular enough schedule to keep this kind of animal, but oh god I would really love to. these guys might just be the 'last push' i need to seriously fix my sleep schedule, so that maybe someday i can add 'seahorse care' into my daily routine. my routine is non-existent, at least not enough to siphon daily and feed them at least 3 times. BUT MAYBE SOMEDAY
    what magical little creatures. i'm blown away that you can keep them as pets, and they don't seem that difficult all things considered. wow

      I suspect the reality is that they produce lots of babies and as the babies are maturing the adults are dying of old age (18 months) which stresses you out pulling out dead seahorses so you try to sell them, you wait til they are mature for a few months, you find a lfs, they take them from you and sell to a customer over the next few months before they start dying of old age in the lfs and peoples homes

    This video helped me a LOT!! I am getting a 60 gallon tank for my freshwater fish and now I have an empty 38 gallon tank. I really wanted seahorses and saw dwarf seahorses. I'll stick with regular sized ones so I can add a few nice salt water fish with them. I loved this video!

    Bought some drawf seahorses in the back of a magazine many years ago. It included tank and salt and hitching post. I received a small box it had the six inch square tank, brime shrimp eggs salt and hitching post. Ended up buying a ten gallon tank salt. Used a sponge filter powered by air. Had one for about a year. The small star fish that they sent pinned my seahorses next to the glass and killed them off. They were near while they lasted.

    Just found your youtube site while searching for more information on dwarf seahorses because you can never know too much! I have to say it was excellent! All those who say it's trash, well, obviously have never owned dwarfs! I currently have 2 10 gallons both with bare bottoms and fake decor. Tried the "natural" route and my tank crashed, luckily was able to save most of them 😞The small tank size has a lot to do with it I think. I just started cycling a 50 gallon for larger seahorses as well. Glad to have run into your videos! Since I have Covid and nothing better to do, you'll be my binge watch lol

      Seahorse Whisperer - Both! Actually had me jumping out of my seat!🤣 But my own fault since I should have been in bed 4 hours ago. Anyway, could hear it all fine, what you are noticing is the fact that each stitched clip has its own volume so it fluctuates. Same effect you get when watching a video that is lower so you turn the volume up, then the next video blasts you out of your seat!😲 I am always adjusting the volume while watching TH-cam. sometimes I'm lazy and will just hit mute and just read the closed captions!🤓
      I've watched a few of yours now and honestly they are great! This is the only one I noticed. And it seemed like it was only the selfie video clips that were loud throwing it off. I don't know what video/audio editing software you use for processing but most of the good ones have a volume equalization tool in the audio editing section or the processing section, one of mine is just a box to click so can easily miss. If yours doesn't there are many low-cost and free software options, or apps depending on where you upload from, that can easily process it before you upload. But honestly, you are fine without that, considering the quality service and time you give, if a viewer can't hit a volume button once or twice to get this kind of detailed information for free they can move right on to the next!👿👉👣🤣
      I have to apologize for rambling on with unsolicited advice you clearly were not looking for.🤐 It is just when it comes to something I am good at and passionate about I can't help but to jump in and just hope to not get slapped!😓 But I'm sure you know all about that seeing how passionate you are about sea horses and taking the time to help others care for theirs correctly so hoping it was ok. If by chance you ever do have actual questions or need any help please feel free to message me. I absolutely love working with digital media, pushing the limit wherever I can, even though you wound not think it since all I have is a couple of videos of my dog, but that's because I can't help sharing her cuteness.💕🐶
      I'm sure I will be doing same thing by watching more of your videos when take the jump and get a tank. Always wanted some but just recently started talking about it after watching Deep Blue Planet.🐳 Actually, I have always wanted sea horses but even more so I have always wanted sea dragons, but I don't even know legal since never seen one in tank.... But I am now realizing I'm extremely rambling because I am soooo tired and already 5 hours past bedtime so thanks for letting me ramble and goodnight! 😌😔😴⛼

    Quick question. I’ve just bought a 5 gallon tank and I’m new to keeping seahorses. I’m doing a lot of research before I buy a few next month and during the start of the video, you said you could keep 20-40 sea horses per 5 gallons. I was hoping to start off with just a small herd of females for a couple of weeks just to make sure I had the basics of keeping them. Would it be OK to keep a small group like that in a 5 gallon tank? I wouldn’t want to begin breeding them and then suddenly realise I couldn’t cope.

    • @luciearawana7589
      @luciearawana7589 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure you you can, but the difficulty with dwarfs is to keep enough live food suspended while keeping a good water quality. Also enriched baby brine shrimps will loose their nutritive quality if they stay too long in the tank. So it can be tricky to find the right amount of food : enough for the seahorses to feed easily, but not to much because they will end up in filtration and loose nutritive quality. One "trick"is to use a very small light to concentrate most BBS at the opposite side of the filter, so most BBS will stay out of the filter. Flow should be dial so some bbs are still all over the tank but most are still available as far as possible from the filter. Of course, more hitchs will be on that concentration spot. Hope that helps.

    I have been told live rock and sand is a must for dwarf seahorses and having trouble getting nitrate down in my 10 gal it has been running for 4 to 5 months

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appaloosas Saulsberry stay tuned for the real reef rock video :).
      In my opinion, the risks and hitchikers are not worth the good things that live rock brings to the table. Most people with longterm success use artificial items within the dwarf tank.
      What are your nitrates running?
      What have you tried so far to lower them? Are the seahorses acting differently than before the nitrates?

    • @appaloosassaulsberry2399
      @appaloosassaulsberry2399 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      at first water test shows 40 was told water change 20 % every 3 day then retest it still at 40 then had another water change 30 % retested had a tiny crab die and it went to 80% so I decided to for go my saltwater tank and go back to freshwater. I running before I get my seahorses I wanted it just right first.
      I might try it without live sand and rock and see how it goes thanks for your time

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry to hear that you had such troubles. But I bet your freshwater tank is awesome!
      I’m wondering if you were using tap water in the saltwater tank? I have really bad water in my area, that has nitrates of 20 right out of the tap. So, I had to get an Rodi system to clean my water for my tanks. If you are using tap water, check the nitrates of the water BEFORE you put it in the tank!

    Hello, I have a genuine question and please do not hate me for it, I want to know y’all’s opinion on my options here!
    I work at a fish store and am a very experienced fish/ reef keeper with several tanks and one of them is the 40oz picotank by biota which I have had running at my job for months and a pretty good tank established, everything quarantined and pest free. Mostly macro algae with some mushrooms, zoas, and a Kenya tree (which I am effy about as after a lot of research I’m still trying to see if the polyps on that are of any danger, but I’m ready to toss it if needed.)
    I’ve been testing it constantly and it’s pretty stable on salinity at 1.025, 0’s on ammonia and nitrite with 2.0ppm nitrate (which is just a result of me having plenty of copepods, a few live mysis, and a few tiny snails to keep everything running.) while still testing good for reef elements as well, although I’m not concerned about that.
    We recently had a batch of dwarfs come in, and I’ve been able to keep an eye on the last of the batch who hasn’t sold in three months now and I believe I have even caught eating some frozen calanus shrimp! I’ve seen studies of people keeping a breeding pair in a 2 liter container.
    Water changes and feeding shouldn’t be much of an issue as I have a brine hatchery for another project anyway and am ready to grab some enrichment for some,and with plenty of larger tanks and the water to match should I need anything else.
    At the moment, I’m also unable to order more to the store so I couldn’t really just get him a group to sell/ get more for him myself until further notice, and while this isn’t something I’d ever recommend for a customer I’m curious if you think this is possible or if I am way over my head?
    Thanks for all advice!

      I am just wondering the same thing?!

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely depends on the setup! If you can describe the plans you have, I can give you a better answer.
      For example, what size is the tank? Will a sump be attached? Sand? How many h. Zosterae? Do you plan to quarantine the macros?
      I’m not at all trying to avoid the questions :). But there aren’t simple answers.
      The reason most people steer clear of macros in a dwarf tank is because the tiniest hydroid or aptasia can be a killer. So let me know more about your overall plans, and I’ll help you get some pretty macros in a dwarf tank!

    Can you use simple seashells for decoration ? thats my other question i have decided to use no substrate as all the tutorials shown said to do so and im ok with that . I have a solution by cutting out the round shape of my tank and putting it on the bottom on the outside of the tank where i set it down . I know brine shrimp are the food they want and plan to start a colony to keep a continuous supply. What else can they eat besides brine shrimp ?

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jersey, brine shrimp has to be enriched in order to provide enough nutrition. And, the hatchery should be cleaned often to prevent bacterial issues. Copepods are a great supplemental food for dwarfs. Check out reedmariculture.com for copepods, and how to culture them. Because dwarfs can only eat tiny foods, and they eat so many of them, culturing pods and having an efficient brine shrimp hatchery are they true key to success with these little seahorses.

      @@SeahorseWhisperer sorry for the late answer, I just saw your comment. I have a 20 g Aquarium. I use UV Light, a small skimmer, filtration (NO carbon - I had bad experiences). In the aquarium I have mostly non photosynthetic gorgonians and some mushrooms (all of them harmless). I prefer a as natural as it gets enviroment. Since NP Gorgonians I don't use the light all day which I find is less stressful for the seahorses. Dragonets are extremely peaceful and slow and they eat the same live food ( I breed copepods etc. Live food).I feed multiple times a day and created caves in the tank for the live food to reproduce and hide. I also use often phytoplankton.
      In the tank I have a cleaning crew ( snails etc.) And Hawaiian shrimps. They are as small as the seahorses and when they reproduce, they provide excellent live food as well. Actually everything the shrimp reproduce after a while the seahorses do as well. If you have any questions im happy to answer. 😊

    Hi Kelly @seahorsewhisperer! I find your channel fascinating. I have had dwarf and large seahorses off and on over the years. For some reason, my latest experiences with larger seahorses a couple of years ago were a disaster, and I'm not sure why. I am amazed that you have so much success with them, but aren't interested in dwarf seahorses. I have a "nature" topic YT channel (not around anywhere near as long as you), but the channel mostly talks about my dwarf seahorses which I have been pretty successful with. I just thought it interesting that we have different thoughts about large vs dwarf seahorses. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to connect. ~Theresa @cowfishpro

    does panacur kills macro?

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the species of algae. Caulerpas and most gracilaria are not affected, but I lost a few others when I treated for hydroids. Different people have reported different results, so Do a little test: take little clippings of all your algae in the tank, put the clippings into a container of tank water from a water change, and dose the panacur. Then you will know how they will all react. Definitely don't use it will coral, gorgonians, or those types of things. And, remember that the rock can soak it up and leech it back out, so there will be risk in using any treated rock in a tank with coral. When I treated for hydroids, I put the rock back into the tank with gorgonians, and everything was fine. But, I can't promise that will always be the case. Finally, don't forget that it will also kill bristleworms, starfish, and other Cnidarians, and the die off could cause an ammonia spike. Have an ammonia test kit to monitor and be ready to do water changes if there's a problem. When I treated, I did so in a bucket outside the tank. But, I understand that is not always possible. Prime is good for emergencies too, because it can stop an ammonia spike from becoming deadly.

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shekina Shalom haven’t had any problem yet. But doing a test on a small piece outside the tank is the easiest way to be sure that the macro species you keep will tolerate the meds.

    What’s the cheapest place to get larger seahorses? I’m sixteen so money is kind of a struggle haha. But I’ve really been wanting to try Seahorses out!! Is there any cheap places with nice horses?

      Where are you located? I'd be happy to connect you with a local breeder. Currently in the US, the best resources include Seahorse Source, Seahorse Savvy and of course always check with your local reefing club. The first two are professional breeders ( whom I can personally give credit to for excellence), but I also know many breeders who only work with locals in their areas (that care so much about their seahorses that you can't go wrong buying from them). In Australia, check with Chris from Seahorse World. In the UK, check with Tom Hornsby. And feel free to ask about a specific area.

    What about pygmy seahorses?

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      kriSTD, ang maarteng KSP pygmy seahorses are too difficult for the hobby atm. Scientists even have trouble. They have gotten pygmy seahorses to approx 6 months, but just can’t keep food/nutrition up in captivity. Many pygmy species eat things we can’t culture yet, and at this time....they should be left in the ocean. Im a firm believer that we should not take from the ocean if at all possible. There’s a huge difference between experts collecting fish sustainably for research or aquaculture reasons, and hobbyists trying to keep fish that we darn well know need more than we can give. In this video, I talk a lot about dwarfs being comparable to fry. They are MORE difficult than adult captive bred seahorses, and my aim is to help anyone ready to keep them, but also educate anyone who is not. Pygmy seahorses (IMO) should not be in tanks at this time. And dwarfs should only be kept by someone ready to dedicate the time and tank space to care for them correctly.

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry if that sounds harsh. Captive breeding makes every difference, and allows us to keep seahorses easily in homes. I fully support this. But also support conservation and being smart about what we can and can’t do sustainably. I hope things do change, because pygmy seahorses are adorable!

    How much do seahorses cost ?(USAprice)
    What’s a breeder that I could buy from

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Depends completely on the species and the company. Seahorses can range from $10 for a dwarf to hundreds for a CB quality Reidi. What are you looking for?

    • @josetufino2613
      @josetufino2613 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seahorse Whisperer well although I’ve been in the marine hobby for quite sometime & seahorses would my most difficult fish I would keep I would start with the most economic . If they cost $10 I would definitely buy them

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would not advise $10 seahorses :). They would undoubtedly be wild caught, or h. Zosterae (dwarf seahorses). Dwarfs need live foods, so you end up spending more in the long run on feeds. I did not read your full question, sorry. Some good breeders include Seahorse Source and Seahorse Savvy. In the UK, Tom Hornsby is one of the best breeders. Success with seahorses begins with buying captive bred. They will eat frozen foods, and were raised in an aquarium (which means they won’t stress out as much). Many people get upset about the price of a seahorse, or the shipping costs, but it’s truly a case of quality or quantity. I still have my original seahorses (now many years old) because I paid for quality :). Seahorses actually are not that difficult, if you buy with CB. Tell Dan @ seahorse source or Alyssa at Seahorse Savvy that Kelly sent you :).
      You can also check at your local reef club. Many locals are finding success breeding the easier species. For h. erectus, you’ll probably pay $70-$120 a piece, but can find deals on pairs. If you do decide to buy seahorses, come to Wine Wednesday and show us! We’d love to see and help if needed.

      Seahorse Whisperer well in my 20 gallon nano reef I have a full refugium of live foods there wont be a problem I set up a aquamax nano with some dry rock added a bunch caulerpa Algae so I think I could give it a try with wild caught seahorses that could be a good challenge, any sellers who sell wild caught ?

    Hi there I found your video very helpful but I have a question that im not sure if this will work or not but what about these filters? They are not expensive and id have no problem tossing them every so often. I have a 3 Gallon 260 view KollerCreation tank I was given as a early birthday gift and want to make it my new seahorse haven. I have wanted these all my life but i never had the confidence to try until now. I have been doing a lot of research but this is the item in question. It works the same way you spoke of but it has the sponge and carbon, i was wondering if this could work it looks very similar to other filters ive seen used. www.pet.co.nz/product/fish/small-world-filter-cartridge/5687 IF these do I would stock up on them so all i need to do is change them and trash the old one. Please let me know

      @luciearawana7589 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By changing filterm you are basically reseting the tank and removing the essential good bacterias from the tank. Also, another thing to consider is the fact that throwing something just for ease of cleaning is a pure waste. There is many much plastic waste in the world and maybe it s time to change our way of consumption...

    • @luciearawana7589
      @luciearawana7589 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      also this filters will trap fry, probably juveniles too. The surface for beneficial bacterias is too small for dwarfs in my opinion. You don t especially need carbon also.

    The Video is very interesting. But i have to say, that i have hippocampus zosterae and i think it is not as difficult. For sure, it is different from a normal seawater aquarium. I have startet with freshwater around 10 years ago and seawater almost 6 years ago. And i have heard so many opinions from people who have much larger tanks, or have much more tanks than i do. And all of them told me that i need some special technical things. And special waters with some different types of magnesium and so on. But i found out that the best way to keep a tank alive, is to keep it biologicaly active. And how do i do that? Well, with algea. I do not have a sump underneath the tank or other unneeded sh**. I have a lot of algey inside the tank and only live rock. Also in my seahorse tank. I have normal sand. Normal live rock. Normal inverterates like nassarius snales, cone snails (not the deadly ones). I have small hermit crabs. And it works. The sea horses are fine. I feed them every day with 3ml of live artemia. On sunday they do not get anything. I have a normal pump inside the tank. The filtration is only some active carbon. Ive glued a 5mm sponge onto the inlet od the filter. So they dont get sucked in. There is a current flow and the dwarfs love it. The swim around and they are happy and healthy. Here in austria you can get offsprings from germany. Hippocampus zosterae are endangered thats why you cant get them as wild catched (but they are expancive. One costs about 75€, 85$)
    So i think that it is not needed to overreact like this. Just make sure that the aquarium is kept alive eith small animals who clean up the tank and a diverse plancton variety.
    But thanks for the video. Maybe for some people this is very helping. Also, your other videos are great. Greatings from Austria🇦🇹

    • @matteo7867
      @matteo7867 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And i do a 10% percent water change every week and clean the sand with the syphon

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, h. Zosterae are not currently endangered, but many have petitioned for the listing. It could happen, but has not yet. Dwarf seahorses are not commonly captive bred because the farming cost cannot compete with that of wild collected. If one was concerned with them being vulnerable, it’s even more of a reason to avoid keeping them. Dwarf seahorses have a shorter life span and require live foods. Wild seahorses in general are more likely to have parasites, worms and/or etc that shorten their life span even further. That being said, if someone WANTS to keep dwarfs, this video and article merely provides the things to consider, and the advice of experts.
      I appreciate your opinion and am the first to say that there are MANY ways to find success with seahorses. I’m very glad that your seahorses do well in your set up. I too have natural set ups full of macroalgae and rock and love it. However, the tiny h. Zosterae is more at risk when it comes to hydroids, hitchhikers, and etc. this is the reason most choose the safer route of using fake decorations. This does not make your method wrong :). Just explaining why that is our advice.
      Again, I’m glad to hear your methods are working, and would love to see your aquarium sometime!

      @matteo7867 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In europe it is not alowed to sell wild ones. You can only get some from common breeders. Maybe thats why they are so much more expensive than in the us.

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I must have missed the Australian comment. The laws are def different. But, wouldn’t the cost of raising seahorses make CB species in the US MORE expensive here?

    • @matteo7867
      @matteo7867 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are born and raised in germany. I know some people who sell them to aquatic shops. But they need a special certificat from the german government, the eruopean union and i as keeper (and as the one who is buying them from the shop) also need papers from the austrian (not Australia) government. It is like a passport for dwarf seahorse. 😂

      You got me! I've never owned dwarf seahorses, because I know how much work they require! WE made this video to ensure that anyone considering dwarf seahorses understood that they need LIVE feedings and different circumstances from the larger species. My friend Lucie - THAT DOES KEEP DWARF SEAHORSES - helped me put together the video, advice and supplied the photos. Instead of picking me apart, why not support the good information?

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer the larger species also. I've had erectus live over 10 years. With dwarf seahorses, they have babies so often.....you wouldn't keep the same seahorses more than a few years, but you would have more. The choice between species definitely depends on your goals.

    You squeeze the sponge to get all the debris out. She know nothing about sponge filters. SMDH

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      so, you would suggest letting sponge filters just sit, getting clogged up, until what point?

    • @SeahorseWhisperer
      @SeahorseWhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your sponge filter is inhabited by good bacteria, you don't want to lose it. Luckily, you can give a quick squeeze or swish in old tank water.....that eliminates all of the gunk and organics stuck to the outside, while still keeping the good bacteria on the inside. But....try again!
