Aqua Turquoise, hippocampus erectus are (IMO) the best for beginners. I actually wrote an article explaining why :). seahorsewhisperer.com/which-seahorse-species-is-best-for-a-beginner/ Even more important than the species is making sure you buy CAPTIVE BRED seahorses that aren’t being taken from the wild. CB seahorses will be weaned onto frozen foods, be used to living in an aquarium, and don’t have as many bacterial and parasitical issues, like wild caught can have. I’m going to do a live stream tonight to practice some more, answer the hitchhiker question more clearly and take any other questions! Please come! And tell others!

My current seahorses are hippocampus erectus. They came from Seahorse Source (no longer in business, but still joins us on Wine Wed to educate) and my beautiful female is from Siren Song Seahorses. I’ve kept many species over the years and bought from these two companies, along with Seahorse Savvy and Ocean Rider. The main goal is to ensure you’re buying captive bred seahorses and get as much advice from the breeder/seller as you can! Please tag us if you get your tank set up!

How long can they live
Depends on the species. Zosterae only live a few years, while Erectus can survive up to 14 years in an aquarium.
